.Ice jam activity is resulting in flooding along the Rock River
and portions of the Mississippi River near Burlington. Rising
temperatures and precipitation over the next several days are
expected to break up the ice jams, allowing these rivers to return
to more typical open water levels. Runoff from forecast rainfall
is expected to keep the Rock River at Joslin above flood stage
well into next weekend.
River forecasts include past precipitation and forecast rainfall for
the next 48 hours.

Issued at 308 PM CST Sat Jan 7 2017 Arctic air is over the Midwest, but with sunshine and a good mixing day, highs have climbed to the mid teens north to lower to mid 20s south. Satellite shows a snow field touching our far north, and covering our southern 1/4 or so. && .SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Sunday) ISSUED AT 308 PM CST Sat Jan 7 2017 Tonight will be a classic radiational cooling night under high pressure. A rapid fall to around zero is forecast for all sites shortly after 8 PM, followed by a slow fall to the -7 to zero range from north to south, with cold drainage spots the coldest in that range. Sunday will see the high move east, and south winds return. Mid and high clouds spreading overhead will keep our highs from being too much warmer than today though. For now, teens north to mid 20s south seem well forecast by the model blended solution. ERVIN .LONG TERM...(Sunday Night through Saturday) ISSUED AT 308 PM CST Sat Jan 7 2017 Main theme of the long term forecast is a shift from NW flow to more zonal to southwest flow. This will translate into a change from cold temps to warmer temperatures and the return of low tracks across our area. The first possible event will occur Monday night into Tuesday morning with a warm advection wing into the area. Then another system midweek and then the end of the week. Ptype is the primary forecast concern in the long term. Soundings indicate that ice will be present in the column, leading to snow at onset. As the warm advection brings warmer air into the area, expect this snow to transition into a mix across the northern CWA. This will then transition to all rain on Tuesday. At this time it appears that limited QPF and warming temperatures will lead to low impacts across the area. Less than an inch of snow and less than a few hundreths of ice accumulation is forecast. This should melt quickly on Tuesday as temperatures warm well into the upper 30s and 40s. Past Tuesday, descrepancies between medium range guidance makes it difficult to peg down the next wave through the flow. There will be another weak system sometime midweek, however at this time forecast confidence is low. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Sunday Evening) ISSUED AT 522 PM CST Sat Jan 7 2017 High pressure moving over the region will provide light northwest winds and clear skies overnight into Sunday morning. The Mississippi at Gladstone and Burlington is the most impacted by these rises, and a flood warning has been issued for Burlington on the Mississippi River. It appears ice jamming on the west side channel from around the confluence of the Skunk River up to just south of Burlington is where it is backing up. The east side of the river and east channel downstream of Burlington is reported open. This partial jam on the Mississippi is causing minor flooding, which has been the reason for the warning.
