Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Quad Cities IA IL 615 PM CDT Tue Apr 4 2017 ...AVIATION UPDATE... .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 314 PM CDT Tue Apr 4 2017 18Z surface data has a weak implied boundary running from northwest Iowa, to the Quad Cities, and into northern Indiana. A more substantial storm system was organizing in southern Oklahoma. Dew points were in the 20s and 30s across the upper Midwest and northern Plains with 40s and 50s from the Great Lakes into the southern Plains. && .SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Wednesday) ISSUED AT 314 PM CDT Tue Apr 4 2017 Windy and cold with rain on Wednesday. Mainly cloudy and dry conditions will be seen across the area through sunset. Attention then turns to the approaching storm system. The system for late tonight and Wednesday has considerable energy that will be diving in behind it. Such a scenario means the system will continue to strengthen and thus will exhibit non-linear aspects to it. When this happens, the models always play catch up and the overall scenario depicted can change considerably. It will take another 6 to 12 hours before we will know for sure. As the storm system approaches tonight, rain will expand in coverage across Missouri and move north across the area. Just prior to sunrise some unstable air aloft will move into the extreme south that will bring the risk of a few embedded thunderstorms. On Wednesday, the thunder threat in the far south will dissipate by mid-morning. Widespread rain will continue through mid-day with increasing winds. Starting Wednesday afternoon, thermal profiles suggest some snow will start to mix with the rain. However, the warm ground will initially prevent any accumulation. By mid to late afternoon, a rain/snow mix is expected to develop along and east of the Mississippi and continue through sunset. At this time no accumulation is expected due to the warm ground. HOWEVER, if the storm system becomes stronger than what the models indicate, then the overall atmospheric column would turn colder by a couple of degrees. If this occurs, more snow than rain would then be possible. If that situation occurs, the rate of snowfall becomes very important regarding the potential for any accumulation on grassy surfaces. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday Night through Tuesday) ISSUED AT 314 PM CDT Tue Apr 4 2017 Cold rain with some wet snow ending Wednesday night...then dry with a warming trend into Sunday with a chance of showers and storms into Monday and then cooler. Long Term Forecast Confidence Assessment...fair to poor or average to below average. Main issue is risk of seasonally strong occluding system east of the Mississippi River that may have enough evaporative cooling for some wet snow on grassy surfaces of an inch or more. This risk will likely not be known for another 12 to 18 hours to see how latent heat or precipitation develops as storm blossoms tonight. Otherwise, cold temperatures on Friday may be enough for frost/freeze headline another issue. Wednesday night...as mentioned above, trends are for a deep occluding system that will impact east of the Mississippi River through the evening hours. Local techniques very close to wet snow sticking on grassy surfaces and rated a roughly 30 to 40 percent chance of occurrence depending how storm develops. Local tools support up to a quarter inch of rain with possibly wet snow as mentioned earlier. Lows in the mid to upper 30s with clearing trend toward morning from the northwest. Thursday and Friday...seasonally cool with skies clearing by Thursday afternoon. Highs mainly in the upper 40s to upper 50s with lows in the 30s with some upper 20s possible Friday morning that may require a frost or freeze headline for later shifts to assess. Friday night through Sunday...warming on south winds with mins in the 50s with highs in the 60s Saturday and probably 70s on Sunday. Sunday night and Monday...low confidence of timing of a weakening front that should produce some showers and possibly storms that will take another 2 to 3 days to better assess. Temperatures still about 10 degrees above normal or 50s for lows with highs 65 to 75. Precipitation amounts suggested to be light to moderate. Risk for severe is too uncertain to clarify for a couple of days, but appears low to NIL at this time.
