Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Quad Cities IA IL 1143 PM CDT Mon Apr 3 2017 ...06z AVIATION UPDATE... .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 239 PM CDT Mon Apr 3 2017 Strong surface low pressure was located near Saint Louis Missouri during the early afternoon hours. Upper level low pressure was also moving into the region, supporting widespread showers across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois. Early afternoon temperatures were mostly in the 50 to 55 degree range. For the past 12 hours ending at 3 pm, rainfall amounts of a quarter to half inch were common along and east of the Mississippi River. Similar amounts, locally around 0.75 inches, occurred from Dubuque to Independence, and southward to Sigourney. Lighter amounts fell over parts of eastern Iowa. && .SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Tuesday) ISSUED AT 239 PM CDT Mon Apr 3 2017 The main forecast issues in the short term period are rain trends through the overnight hours. In the near term, scattered light to locally moderate rain will persist into the early evening per high res model trends. Thus far, no thunder has occurred in the forecast area, but with convective elements skirting Bureau/Putnam Counties, will leave a slight chance of thunderstorms in place until 00Z. After sunset, the focus of rain will shift to areas along and north of Interstate 80 as a secondary upper trough rotates through the region. Expect the rain to taper off toward daybreak in the far northeast. Any fog overnight will only be an impact to aviation, with visibilities expected to stay up greater than 1SM. For Tuesday, expect some breaks in the clouds during the afternoon with a persistent northerly breeze and near normal highs in the 50s. Some light rain could spread into the far southwest during the late afternoon ahead of the next potent storm system. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday Night through Monday) ISSUED AT 239 PM CDT Mon Apr 3 2017 Forecast focus on potent storm system at mid week then dry with a warming trend through the weekend. Tuesday night through Thursday: Potent upper level low currently seen on water vapor movie loops over the Great Basin was producing quite a bit of lightning strikes. Models similar in tracking this system near St. Louis on Wednesday and then into the OH Valley on Thursday. This will spread moderate to locally heavy rainfall into the dvn cwa Tuesday night through Wednesday. The higher rainfall totals of around an inch to 1.50 inches should be along/south of a Fairfield to Quad Cities to Princeton, IL line. This is based on the path of the surface low and where the higher PWAT's will exist. Isolated thunderstorms are possible in our far se where minimal instability will be found. With the potent system tracking to our southeast, this will be quite the wind maker so hang onto your hat! Northeast to north winds should be gusting to 35 to 40 mph Wednesday through Thursday. As far as snow is concerned, the NAM is still the model that depicts a stronger cyclone/deepening upper low. With enough cold air on the backside of the low this model suggests the rain will mix with and then turn to all snow Wednesday afternoon and evening. The other models keep the precipitation mainly as rain in the cwa with the deepening process farther to our east. This would suggest any accumulation would be from Chicago into Lower MI. For now the grids will indicate rain turning to snow in our eastern cwa Wednesday night and later shifts will need to monitor later model trends. The precipitation (rain or snow) will end early Thursday morning as the cyclone quickly moves off to the east. Temperatures have been lowered on Wednesday even more with highs only in the lower 40s east of a Dubuque, IA to Memphis, MO line. The bottom line is this system will make for a raw day on Wednesday, with precipitation, strong winds and chilly temperatures. Thursday through Friday: Chilly Thursday and Thursday night then a warming trend commences on Friday. Lows will dip into the lower to mid 30s with highs warming into the 50s by Friday. This weekend: Rapid warm-up in store as another strong cyclone pushes into the northern Plains, and pumps up a ridge in the Midwest. This will push temperatures into the 60s on Saturday and into the lower 70s on Sunday. Increasing northwest winds will bring in some low level drying and likely lead to lifting of ceilings to high mvfr and vfr by Tuesday afternoon. Surge of lift may lead to sprinkles or light showers later Tuesday afternoon into evening near BRL and possibly MLI. Rain chances look to increase across the terminals Tuesday night, initially south of I-80 through 06z Wed where conditions likely to drop down to mvfr. && .HYDROLOGY... Issued at 928 PM CDT Mon Apr 3 2017 Lower confidence exists on rainfall amounts with the second system Tuesday night through Wednesday, as trends still show a more southerly track from this recently departing storm. If these trends persist then the heavier rain amounts Tuesday night through Wednesday would be favored more on the lower reaches of the IA and IL tributary rivers. Even with a more southerly track of the second system, most locations will likely have received around 1 inch to upwards of 2 inches of rainfall between the departing storm and the next one quick on it's heels by midweek. The wet soils from the recent rainy pattern and additional rainfall will contribute to above normal streamflows on many rivers and a threat for flooding where the heaviest rains occur. One such river that could see flooding is on the Iowa River at Marengo, which could reach flood stage Tuesday evening. Confidence is low on reaching flood stage due to the trends toward a more southerly storm track and placement of heaviest rainfall, and uncertainty with amount of runoff. As a result of the lower confidence, I have continued the flood watch for the Iowa River at Marengo. The river could rise above flood stage Tuesday evening. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY Isolated thunderstorms are possible late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning south of line from Fairfield Iowa to Galesburg Illinois. Severe storms are not expected. Widespread moderate to locally heavy rainfall over the outlook area Tuesday night and Wednesday may lead to flooding on area rivers by late this week into the weekend. Rain may turn to snow by Wednesday night in some areas but snow accumulations should be less than an inch, and mainly on grassy surfaces. Northeast to north winds will gust to 35 to 40 mph Wednesday through Thursday. High profile vehicles should use extra caution. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
