Issued at 330 AM CST Sat Jan 7 2017 The latest SFC analysis was indicating a low center over northwestern IA, inducing south to southwesterly winds of 5 to 8 MPH currently acrs much of the western 2/3's of the fcst area. This feature a sfc reflection of wave/vort lobe aloft that was extending from the U.P. of MI, to north central IA, embedded in mid to eastern CONUS L/W trof. This llvl flow combined with the associated cloud cover with the system causing temps to rise in the early morning hours. The local 88D also picking up on a plume of flurries or light snow embedded in the cloud cover, although besides at CID, not much indicated in the sfc Observations at this time indicating much of these snow crystals aloft or very fine by the time they reach the sfc. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) ISSUED AT 330 AM CST Sat Jan 7 2017 Today...Will walk the sfc wave and front eastward acrs mainly the north half of the CWA through 15z this morning. Until then, will have rounds of clouds and some embedded flurries/light snow early this morning and then clear them from west-to-east with the system passage by mid to late morning. Then another Canadian high of 1045 MB strength looms acrs the northern plains, plunging down acrs the MO RVR valley and central IA through this evening. As a result, sfc flow will veer to the west and northwest as the day progresses especially during the afternoon, with speeds of 10 to 15+ MPH. This will drag re-enforcing cold air influx off the northern plains and western MN snow fields by late afternoon and into tonight. Until then, will go with high temps today mainly in the teens aided by the current "spring board" of pre-system southwest flow. Tonight...Most of the 00z run model solutions in good agreement of suggesting the upstream high pressure center to settle southeastward acrs the CWA through the late night...only moderation down to 1043 or 1042 MB along the way. Inherent sfc wind decouple to light and variable, and mainly clear skies will allow for optimum radiational cooling along with the fresh advection from the northern plains for another very cold night. Will keep or just make minor tweaks to the previous shift's cooler lows along and north of the HWY 30 corridor with lows ranging from -2 to at least -7F, and another cooler strip of around zero or a few degrees below in the southern third to quarter of the CWA where there is some lingering light snow cover swaths. Sfc winds should be light enough to alleviate any true wind chill concerns. ..12.. .LONG TERM...(Sunday through next Friday) ISSUED AT 330 AM CST Sat Jan 7 2017 A light to moderate mostly rain event the main forecast issue with a trend to more seasonable temperatures. Long Term Forecast Confidence Assessment...Fair to poor or average to below average. Main issue remains precipitation types late Monday through Tuesday. Trends are more liquid but likely still too much snow/ice risk suggested with surface low moving to northwest of the area on south winds which is not favorable for ice issues or any snow totals. Tuesday night...some mixed of light wet snow possible north in the evening with little or no accumulations. Wednesday...Increasing clouds late PM with weak disturbance from south to arrive with highs near seasonable with upper 20s to upper 30s south.
