Fair weather cumulus clouds were common along and east of the
Mississippi River during the afternoon hours. A north breeze
averaged 10 to 20 mph. Early afternoon temperatures were in the
low to mid 60s at most locations.

.SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Sunday)
ISSUED AT 226 PM CDT Sat May 6 2017

The main forecast issue in an otherwise quiet short term period is
consideration of frost headlines tonight.

High pressure, a light wind, and a mostly clear sky will allow for
chilly temperatures tonight, especially over the northeast third
of the forecast area. The lower end of forecast guidance favors
lows in the mid 30s over extreme northwest Illinois. After
collaboration with neighboring offices, will issue a frost
advisory for Stephenson, Jo Daviess and Carroll Counties from 07z
to 13Z Sunday.

For Sunday, the warmer end of guidance is favored based on how
temperatures are trending today, and weak WAA anticipated in the
west Sunday. Highs are forecast in the low 60s near Freeport, to
the low 70s in the far southwest.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday Night through Saturday)
ISSUED AT 226 PM CDT Sat May 6 2017

Although the models differ on the details, there is agreement
that the weather pattern will turn active again next week but
there will be periods of dry weather. After near to slightly above
normal temperatures the first part of the week, the models are
indicating below normal temperatures for the second half of the
week.

Quiet and dry conditions will be seen Sunday evening across the
area. Late Sunday night an upper level disturbance will move out of
the Plains. The models are showing the air becoming unstable aloft
allowing showers and a few rumbles of thunder to develop prior to
sunrise across the southwest third of the area.

In far northwest Illinois late Sunday night, some patchy frost may
be seen across Stephenson county.

Monday morning the upper level disturbance will move through the
area bringing a threat of showers. A few rumbles of thunder are
possible south of a Sigourney, IA to Macomb, IL line. By Monday
afternoon, diurnal heating is expected to produce a new round of
showers and some thunderstorms in the unstable air.

The threat of showers and some thunderstorms will persist Monday
night across the area with rain ending from west to east during the
day Tuesday as a cold front moves through the area.

Tuesday night on...

Tuesday night through Thursday the models have another storm system
moving through the Midwest. The models disagree on the track of the
storm which will depend upon where the front stalls. However, there
is loose agreement that the south half of the area is most at risk
for more rain. Additionally, the models are indicating that some
very moisture rich air will be moving north with the storm system so
there is a risk for locally heavy rainfall. On Thursday, a strong
cold front will move through the area helping to push the rain south
of the area.

Right now the model consensus has chance pops across the south half
Tuesday night with slight chance pops across the north half.
Wednesday/Wednesday night chance pops cover the entire area with the
highest across the south half. On Thursday chance pops cover the
south half with dry conditions across the north half.

Thursday night through Friday night mainly dry conditions will be
seen across the area as another cool Canadian high pressure moves
across the Midwest.

On Saturday, the models indicate an upper level disturbance will
move through the Great Lakes. The increased forcing combined with
diurnal heating is expected to generate showers Saturday afternoon.
Right now the model consensus has slight chance pops over the
northeast third of the area.
