backside of an area of low pressure over Wisconsin. Temps ranged
from near 40 F over the east to 34 F in the NW. Winds have come

.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)
ISSUED AT 309 AM CDT Fri Oct 27 2017
Today
Very cold compared to yesterday when temps were in the 60s and
lower 70s. For today, highs are forecast in the upper 30s to
lower 40s. And strong west winds of 20-30 mph will create wind
chills in the 20s and 30s!
Wrap around moisture associated with the low moving through
Wisconsin will affect mainly areas along and north of highway 30
in the form of rain and snow showers. The best chance for
occasional snow showers are late this afternoon into early tonight
roughly along and NW of a line from Iowa County to Jo Daviess
County. After sunset, a light dusting on grassy or elevated
surfaces, of a trace to a few tenths, is possible NW of a line
from Cedar Rapids to Dubuque. However, roadways will remain wet.
Tonight
Freeze Warning in effect for the western tier of counties, including
Delaware County, for temps between 30-32 F.
There is still time for minor eastward adjustments that could
include another tier or so of counties. Will let day shift re-
evaluate new model data and sfc obs through the day. This is a
situation, with stratus and steady west winds, where frost will
not occur. Therefore, if temps bottom out between ~30-32 F it will
be a straight freeze. Uttech
.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)
ISSUED AT 309 AM CDT Fri Oct 27 2017
The growing season will end Saturday evening, in ALL LOCATIONS in
eastern Iowa, northwest Illinois and northeast Missouri that didn't
see a freeze tonight. Given the two night freeze potential, we've
tried hard to collaborate the message that all areas are going to be
freezing all night long Saturday night. A cold air mass will be in
place Saturday, with highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s, under
stratus in the morning. As the surface high reaches the Mississippi
River Saturday evening, and the upper wave passes to the east, there
near guarantee that stratus moves east of the area during the
evening hours. This will allow temperatures to more or less crash at
sunset, with sub-freezing temperatures becoming widespread by 7 PM.
Lows in the mid 20s are expected, and with 10 to 14 hours below
freezing, this will end any growing season plants, and thankfully,
most bugs. Given the near 100% chance of a very hard freeze, we'll
go with a freeze warning, which also allows for more clear messaging
for western areas that will see a freeze both nights
potentially(tonight and Saturday night).
Pops in this weeks forecast are few and far between. However, the
first opportunity will arrive Sunday afternoon and evening, as
another vigorous upper wave phases into the large eastern CONUS low.
The forcing appears short lived, but rather strong as waa focuses
just ahead of the wave Sunday PM. After south winds help mix
temperatures up to the mid to upper 40s Sunday, the increasing
clouds and light precipitation should keep all of it light rain,
mainly north of interstate 80, where saturation should be better
attained. Farther south, clouds, and possible sprinkles could occur.
Behind the wave, more cold air will be in place Monday through
Wednesday, with more sub freezing lows frequenting the area. Some
stratus potential exists during this period as well, which may be
the main forecast challenge ahead, but otherwise, sprinkles or
flurries may be the only real potential in this pattern until
southwest flow aloft develops by the end of the week.
