Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Des Moines IA 1226 PM CDT Thu Oct 26 2017 ...Updated for 18z Aviation Discussion... .SHORT TERM.../Today through Tonight/ Issued at 348 AM CDT Thu Oct 26 2017 Forecast Confidence... Medium-High Bottom Line up Front... Another day of above normal temperatures is on store for Iowa. However, strong winds will once again overtake the state today into tomorrow. Additionally, we could be seeing our first snow of the season across northern Iowa overnight. Today... Staring on the larger scale, from west to east, a large 500mb high is coming onshore in the Pacific NW. Meanwhile, an impulse is ejecting off of a longwave trough over central Canada. This impulse strengthens rather impressively during the day on Thursday. All models are picking up on what becomes a well-defined PV anomaly being located over central MN by 18z-21z this afternoon, and wrapping around into western Wisconsin by 12z Fri. In the low levels, a cold front will be attendant to the sfc reflection low. Frontogenetical forcing is easy to locate, tilting westward with height as it advances through Iowa late this afternoon into tonight. Though forcing and ascent processes are in play, moisture transport in the low-levels is notably absent. SFC dewpoint depressions are around 5 to 10F, with higher depressions increasing towards the south. Temperatures today should be close to where they were yesterday, before the front passes through and strong CAA begins. Precipitation... Chances are high the frontal passage will be a dry one. As described above, there is a lot of dry air in the low levels as the front passes through. SFC convergence is not all that great, so will struggle to get anything beyond virga at the very best this afternoon. Overnight, the 500mb vorticity plane shows the low evolving to a prototypical comma-shape, with the ascent portion with the backside of the low pushing into Iowa between 06z and 09z. Fcst sounding analysis shows the above-sfc profile to be well below 0C. The profile is one that is not indicative of freezing rain/fzdz. Rather snow flurries are likely overnight. Accumulations tonight should be rather light and under one inch. Winds... Behind the frontal passage will come another shot of strong winds. The front should be through the western counties in our CWA by around 15z-18z, through I-35 by around 18z-21z, and through the rest of the DMX CWA by around 00z tonight. As with the winds from this past Mon-Tue, the isallobaric gradient is rather tight. The pressure gradient is around 3mb/50 km, which is impressive. Perusing fcst soundings around the CWA, mixed layer winds are generally in the 30 to 40 kt range, with the highest winds in our northwest. Opted to leave our northwestern counties out of Wind Advisory for now, though they may need to be added by the incoming shift. KEST to possibly as far south as KCSQ could see an hour or two of 45kt wind gusts today into tonight. .LONG TERM.../Friday through Wednesday/ Issued at 348 AM CDT Thu Oct 26 2017 Most of the longer term issues are up front in this forecast as large trof deepens across the central and eastern United States into the early part of the weekend. Strong cold advection will be ongoing at the beginning of the period on Friday morning with brisk northwest winds across all of central Iowa with winds likely just shy of advisory criteria in the north and west. Meanwhile, with the upper low deepening just northeast of the forecast area, the northern third of the forecast area will be in the wrap around region of the system. Isentropic lift associated with the very backside of the trowel will be occurring in the north during the day with light precipitation expected. Precipitation type seems likely to be all snow in the far north, especially looking at the BUFR soundings which keep KMCW and over toward KEST at or near freezing through the entire profile. Because of this, have lowered highs in the north to just above freezing. At this point, accumulations of an inch or two appear likely near the MN border, mainly on grassy surfaces. The strong winds will likely blow the falling snow around, but it will likely be close to stucco in texture with little if any blowing once it hits the ground. Road surface temps may also be warm enough to limit much in the way of accumulation as well. However, given it will be the first measurable snow of the season, an advisory may still be needed in the far north on Friday. The lift will transition eastward on Friday night with precipitation gradually ending across much of the area during the evening. Clouds will linger much of the night in the cyclonic flow around the large upper trof, thus keeping overnight lows a bit warmer than they otherwise would be but still cold enough to produce a freeze in most locations. Whatever vegetation doesn't freeze on Friday night will get torched on Saturday night with temperatures dropping into the 20s under clear skies and lighter winds. A roller coaster of temperatures is expected into the middle of next week with a few different frontal passages, although readings will generally remain below normal. The threat of precipitation is also low with limited moisture and fast moving systems. && .AVIATION.../For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon/ Issued at 1225 PM CDT Thu Oct 26 2017 The cold front is just east of I-35 with gusty winds from the northwest of 15 to 25 knots gusting to 30 knots at this time. Terminals that have not seen the wind shift to the northwest and become gusty will within the next few hours. The gusty winds will persist overnight through Friday. Clouds will begin to wrap around into Iowa as low pressure moves over Minnesota. MVFR ceilings will spread southward tonight reaching KMCW this evening and KFOD/KALO later in the night.
