Band 10 water vapor imagery from GOES-16 shows the short-wave trof
axis located roughly from Voyageurs NP to the Apostle islands at 8
PM, and continuing to very slowly move eastward while de-
amplifying. An associated weak surface low is located over western
Lake Superior just offshore of Silver Bay, and despite the larger
scale forcing for ascent weakening with time, a narrow, and
focused axis of on shore flow is persisting into the lakeshore
areas of Cook County in far northeast MN. This is revealed quite
explicitly by the night time microphysics RGB from GOES-16, with
snow bands coming on shore evident from the Superior-West Canadian
radar viewed via radarscope. Thus far, reports from the Cook
County EOC indicate roughly around 3 inches of snow has fallen all
along the highway 61 corridor.
Short range model guidance is in very good agreement that the
onshore flow will persist until around midnight or shortly after,
before the whole process collapses rapidly after midnight as low
moves east and winds become westerly/offshore. However, with
another 4-5 hours of snow to go, this should be sufficient to
produce another 1-3 inches of snow over most areas of southern
Cook County within roughly 10 miles of the Lake Superior shore
line, and bring totals generally in the 3-5 inch range. Thus, we
have issued a winter weather advisory for this area until 4 AM
Friday morning.
Elsewhere, we have made the standard adjustments to temps/sky
cover, etc. to account for the rapid drop in temps that has been
observed in areas along and west of the highway 53 corridor in MN
where it has cleared. But overall, the general theme of message
has not changed. Marginal wind chill advisory thresholds will be
met later tonight with light west/northwest winds, so we have kept
the advisory in effect for later tonight and Friday morning.
The leading edge of a stronger reinforcing blast of arctic air
will arrive tomorrow afternoon/tomorrow night, with a marked
increase in west/northwest winds, and temps diving to frigid
values similar to those of the past few days. Sunday morning has
the potential to be one of the coldest mornings in the Duluth CWA
since late January 2010 - provided winds die down and skies remain
clear, many of our favored cold areas could easily make a run
well into the 40s below zero.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday)

First....surface low pressure was centered over northern MN with
a cold front trailing to the south. Measurable light snow was
still falling ahead of the low in far northwest WI and the MN
Arrowhead while further to the west all that remained was
flurries as far west as Fosston and Detroit Lakes. Snow amounts
have been light- not quite an inch at the most. As this surface
low moves east we will see the snow gradually end from the west,
but lingering the longest over northern WI. More cold air is
coming into the region behind this low and that means the
beginning of another very cold period and lake effect snow.
Expect the lake effect snow to kick in late tonight, after
midnight, and continue Friday as the cold air streams across the
lake on northwest winds. Delta t's between lake and 8h air is
greater than 20 degrees as 8h temperatures dip down to -23 on
Friday. The one thing that could slow down the lake effect snow is
that there could be enough wind shear, especially speed shear, to
curtail much lake effect.
As mentioned, more cold air comes in tonight and wind chills
will again be a concern with the far west seeing the coldest
temperatures/wind chills first tonight. The cold air will make its
way west and we should see dangerous cold wind chills early Friday
morning over much of the rest of northeast Minnesota and slowing
improving a small bit through the morning. There will likely be
more wind chill warnings and advisories for the weekend.
.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Thursday)

The Northland's stretch of frigid weather will continue through the
middle of next week. In fact, there will be a reinforcing wave of
Arctic air early this weekend. The 24/7 subzero temperatures will
continue through at least early next week with periods of
dangerously cold wind chills. Friday night into Saturday morning, as
well as Saturday night into Sunday morning, look to be particularly
cold with widespread wind chills of 30 to 45 below zero. There will
be a brief warm up back into the single digits above zero Tuesday,
but the 12Z GFS, European, and Canadian runs are indicating another
wave of Arctic air during the middle of the week.
There are no signs of any significant snow through the middle of
next week, but there will be periods of light lake effect snow
showers downwind of Lake Superior across far northern Wisconsin.
We would like to bring particular attention to the frigid forecast
New Year's Eve considering expected plans for celebrations and
traveling across the Northland. This New Year's Eve will be one of
the coldest on record with dangerous wind chills. For instance,
Duluth's forecast is only for a high of -8 degrees on New Year's
Eve. The coldest high temperatures for Duluth on December 31st on
record include -16 degrees (1967), -9 degrees (1968), and -8 degrees
(2013). This means this New Year's Eve could tie for Duluth's 3rd
coldest on record in respects to the high temperatures. Temperatures
will plummet well below zero Sunday night into New Year's Day
morning with overnight wind chills of 30 to 40 below zero.

Weak mid level trof axis continues to linger over western Lake
Superior late this evening. A very weak wind field is left in it's
wake, resulting in patches of arctic stratus clouds and MVFR
ceilings, but all snow has ended at the TAF sites. Confidence is
low that any of these ceiling areas will directly affect any of
the terminal sites until late tonight and Friday morning as
another weak wave and leading edge of the next reinforcing shot of
arctic air arrive. West/northwest winds will increase late in
this TAF period as cold advection and surface pressure gradient
increases.
