Intense deep-layer cyclogenesis is well underway this morning over
the Upper Midwest as rapidly amplifying/moving short-wave trof
moves eastward. 994 mb surface low is currently centered near
Redwood Falls, and is beginning its rapid deepening phase over the
next 24 hours, as it is forecast to deepen to near 975 mb north of
Lake Nipigon by midday tomorrow. While the specific details of
precip change timing are rather complex across the CWA, the
overall theme of message is straightforward as this is a fairly
textbook rapidly deepening transition season system. Initially
warm temps and rain will rapidly change to snow from west to east
this afternoon and evening as the surface low moves past and much
colder air surges rapidly southeastward. This will result in a
very rapid change from mild temps in the 30s/40s and light
winds/showers to very strong west/northwest winds rapidly falling
temps into the teens and rain rapidly changing to a 6 to 9 hour
period of moderate to heavy snow and near blizzard conditions with
winds gusting 35-45 mph.

The currently depicted change over timing is perhaps a little bit
fast from west to east, and we have delayed the start time of the
winter storm warning for Koochiching County until noon to line up
better with the rest of our western CWA. The noon start time may
still end up being a little bit fast, as short range model
consensus has the change over from 2-4 PM across the far west, and
between 6-9 PM along the I-35 corridor and Twin Ports. Although
once heavy precip develops this afternoon, the eastward
progression of the change could accelerate a bit due to diabatic
cooling effects of heavy precip and associated melting.

The most important message is that weather, visibility, and road
conditions will deteriorate very rapidly from west to east between
1 and 9 PM, with wet roads rapidly becoming slush and snow covered
before freezing within a couple hours.

We have also upgraded to a storm warning for the western nearshore
waters of the Bayfield Peninsula where it should be fairly easy to
get ~50 knot wind gusts for several hours tonight with the strong
low level cold advection, and we have also hoisted a lake shore
flood advisory for Bayfield County where 8-10 foot waves will
likely have impacts in the exposed shoreline areas, especially
with Lake Superior water levels still hovering near all time
highs.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday)

Complicated forecast this morning with approaching winter storm
and unseasonably warm temperatures continuing this morning.

Early this morning the approaching winter storm was located over
eastern Nebraska. Overcast skies were found over the Northland
with temperatures in the middle to upper 40s in southern Pine
County and southwest Burnett County to the middle and lower 30s in
the Arrowhead and much of far northern Minnesota. A few bands of
light rain showers were observed on regional radar and there were
some rumbles of thunder overnight in northwest Wisconsin.

Today we expect precipitation coverage to increase as the storm
system intensifies. Drizzle is possible over much of northern
Minnesota before the saturated layer deepens sufficiently for rain
showers. Rain will quickly change to snow as forcing for ascent
increases over north-central Minnesota late this morning into
early this afternoon. Made a few adjustments to headlines and
start times. Hoisted Winter Storm Warnings for much of northern
Minnesota starting at 16Z in Koochiching County, where the change
to snow will occur first, then adding Itasca, Cass, Crow Wing, and
northern Aitkin Counties at 18Z today. The change to snow will
gradually progress farther eastward this afternoon and opted to
add the remainder of north-central and northeast Minnesota to the
Winter Storm Warning at 00Z tonight with a Winter Weather Advisory
for southern Aitkin, the I-35 corridor up to Duluth, and the
western few tiers of Wisconsin Counties. Strong southerly winds
are forecast to accompany the winter storm with blowing snow and
reduced visibility a concern. Wind speeds and gusts over central
and east-central Minnesota suggest a potential for near-blizzard
conditions and will be highly dependent on the snowfall rates
while the strongest winds occur. Strong south winds are forecast
over the remainder of northwest Wisconsin this evening and will
quickly turn west to northwesterly overnight. With the strong
winds and a delayed start to the snowfall, we have elected to
issue a Wind Advisory for those locales.

Snow continues overnight tonight and gradually tapers off to snow
showers on Tuesday. We are gradually trimming winter headlines
from west to east Tuesday as snow winds down. Portions of
northwest Wisconsin may need some sort of winter weather headline
for Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday with lake effect snow
showers continuing. Winds will taper off as the surface low pulls
away into far northern Ontario Tuesday.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Sunday)

The main story through the long term will be cooler temperatures
across the Northland and lake effect snow for the snowbelt areas
of northwest Wisconsin.

The affects of the early week winter storm will linger into
Tuesday evening. The surface low will slowly drift eastward from
far northern Ontario toward James Bay by Wednesday afternoon and
gradually fill during that time. Cold air advection and cyclonic
flow over the Northland will keep snow showers in the picture for
northern Minnesota and lake effect snow over northwest Wisconsin.
There is a potential for another 4 to 8 inches of accumulation in
portions of Ashland and Iron Counties from early Tuesday evening
through late Wednesday night. With the Wind Advisory for those
areas today, elected to hold off on additional headlines for now.
Day shift will be in a better position to re-evaluate and update
headlines.

Lake effect snow showers and cooler temperatures will continue
for the remainder of the upcoming week and into the weekend. A
bolus of vorticity and associated shortwave trough is forecast to
dive south from the Arctic Ocean into the Upper Midwest Thursday
night and Friday. The shortwave will bring a chance of snow
showers to the entire Northland late Wednesday afternoon through
early Friday morning. A few inches of snow are likely, and with
very cold temperatures and little moisture, snow ratios should be
high. Behind the passing shortwave, for Friday afternoon through
the weekend, lake effect snow showers will be possible over
northwest Wisconsin with the remainder of the area staying dry and
cold.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Tuesday morning)

Widespread stratus over the area this morning will linger with
MVFR ceilings expected. East winds off Lake Superior and weak
ascent across the area may produce a period of drizzle and lower
ceilings for most terminals. Approaching winter storm will bring
very strong winds with reduced visibility and lower ceilings. Wind
gusts of 30 to 35 knots will result in low visibility even as
snowfall gradually diminishes Tuesday morning.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

An early winter storm will affect the Northland this afternoon
through tonight. Weather conditions will become dangerous this
afternoon in parts of northern Minnesota from International Falls
through Walker, and the Brainerd lakes area. Rain will turn to
snow, temperatures will fall and winds will become very strong.
All these factors will result in near blizzard conditions and
possibly icy roads. These dangerous winter conditions will
overtake the Arrowhead region on northeastern Minnesota later this
evening. The Aitkin area, the Twin Ports, Pine City and far
northwestern Wisconsin will get snow and wind also in the evening.
The rest of Wisconsin will see the changeover from rain to snow
later tonight with gusty winds.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Snow will gradually taper off to snow showers Tuesday over much
of the Northland. Lake effect snow showers are forecast over the
snowbelt areas of northwest Wisconsin for the remainder of the
week. Additional snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are possible
from Tuesday evening through early Thursday morning over portions
of Ashland and Iron Counties in Wisconsin, with lower totals
expected elsewhere in the northern Wisconsin snowbelt.

waters of western Lake Superior.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

A strong storm system will move through the region today through
Tuesday bringing strong winds to western Lake Superior. East to
northeast winds are forecast today and may create conditions
hazardous to smaller vessels for areas from the Twin Ports east
along the south shore of northwest Wisconsin. Winds will quickly
back west to northwest tonight as the storm system moves through
northeast Minnesota to northwest Ontario by Tuesday morning.
Widespread gales are likely over western Lake Superior and a few
storm-force wind gusts are possible from Port Wing to Bayfield.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Strong winds will continue Tuesday with widespread gales
expected. Occasional storm-force gusts to 50 knots are possible
off the tip of the Bayfield Peninsula through Tuesday morning.
West to northwest winds will gradually diminish through Tuesday
evening. Conditions will likely remain hazardous to smaller
vessels through Tuesday night into Wednesday.

With much colder air pouring into the region Tuesday and Tuesday
night, a period of heavy freezing spray is possible for waters
adjacent to northwest Wisconsin.
