Temperatures are really tanking this evening with many locations
already at or below forecast lows. Went ahead and lowered
overnight lows 3-5 degrees more based on trends. Laramie the

Accumulating snow has ended across southeast WY and the western NE
Panhandle this afternoon. Lingering showers should slowly diminish
into the late afternoon and early evening hours w/ departing upper
jet energy and dry air punching in aloft. Clearing skies and light
winds, combined with fresh snow pack will support a cold night for
much of the area with widespread lows in the single digits above &
below zero. Quiet weather prevails for Friday. It will be a tricky
temperature forecast with more sunshine, but existing snowpack may
cut into diurnal heating potential, so we did undercut guidance by
several degrees.
Main forecast concern is the arrival of the next arctic cold front
on Friday night and Saturday. Models are in excellent agreement w/
a significant (130-140 knot) H25 jet extending from southern Idaho
into northern Utah through the day on Saturday, supporting intense
upper-level divergence across all of southeast Wyo and the western
Neb Panhandle in the favored LFQ of the jet. This dynamic support,
combined with ample Pacific moisture will promote widespread light
to moderate snow across the CWA w/ several inches of snow possible
from late Fri night through Sat. The most concerning thing is what
appears to be a classic mesoscale setup for banded snowfall, given
strong low/mid level frontogenesis & robust omega fields along the
frontal zone. In addition, GFS forecast soundings continue to show
deep saturation through the dendritic layer as well as some modest
instability aloft. Thermal profiles should support high snow ratio
numbers on the order of 20:1, and most models suggest QPF of 0.20-
0.40 inch including the ECMWF. That said, there is high confidence
in a general 2-5 inch snowfall w/ isolated higher amounts possible
where banding develops. In the mountains, 12+ inches of snow could
fall.
Strong winds are also possible near Arlington early Saturday, with
50 knot flow aloft and 50-60 meter CAG-CPR gradients at 700 hpa. A
lack of lower level (850 hpa) gradients could be a limiting factor
for high winds, but 40-50 MPH winds combined w/ 2-5 inches of snow
would easily result in blizzard conditions. There is potential for
similar problems over the I-80 summit, though winds should not get
quite as strong as in ARL. Lighter winds E of the Laramie Range.
This storm is occurring on the Saturday before Christmas, so there
will be significant impacts to holiday travel. We decided to issue
a Winter Storm Watch for areas appearing more likely to receive 5+
inches, or 3+ inches with wind gusts over 45 MPH. We opted against
including Laramie at this time, but with WNW winds this may be the
type of event where Laramie may receive substantial snow. The next
shift(s) can look deeper into this potential. The mountains should
fare quite well with snowfall amounts w/ their proximity to strong
dynamic support, so we included them in the Watch as well. Snow is
expected to rapidly diminish Saturday evening.

forecast as it all depends on the exact position of the arctic
front. The ECMWF wants to keep the arctic front along the Laramie
Range through the weekend, resulting in very cold temperatures
along and east of the Laramie Range in addition to another chance
of snow on Christmas day due to warm air advection aloft and
another disturbance moving across the area. The GFS on the other
hand shows the arctic front meandering between the Laramie Range
and the WY/NE border until Christmas day, and then show the
boundary ejecting northeast as a warm front. Increased Max and Min
temperatures a few degrees but did not trend towards the GFS
solution too much at this time. Models then show another strong
arctic push during the middle of next week with another chance of
snow and falling temperatures by Wednesday and Thursday.
