TUESDAY...

* LOCATIONS...The Poconos and the Susquehanna Valley.

* HAZARD TYPES...Heavy snow.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...16 to 20 inches. Higher amounts of 20 to 
  24 inches are possible, mainly on the ridges of the Western 
  Poconos and across the Middle and Lower Susquehanna Valley.

* TIMING...Snow falling along and to the southeast of Interstate
  81 late this evening will spread quickly to the north across 
  the rest of East-Central Pennsylvania by shortly after
  midnight. The heaviest snow will fall from just after midnight
  through Tuesday afternoon, especially right during the morning 
  commute. Additional, lighter snow is expected to linger into 
  Tuesday evening. A nearly stationary band of very heavy snow 
  falling at the rate of 2-4 inches per hour could set up near 
  the Interstate 81 and 83 corridors from York...to 
  Harrisburg...Lebanon and Pottsville for several hours between 
  2 AM and 9 AM Tuesday.   

* IMPACTS...Travel will become extremely difficult late tonight 
  through Tuesday afternoon, with snow covered, slippery roads, 
  and poor visibilities. The morning commute on Tuesday will be 
  extremely difficult if not impossible. Avoid travel, if at all 
  possible.

* WINDS...Southeast at 5 to 10 mph turning quickly to the 
  northeast and increasing to 10 to 15 mph. The wind will be 
  faster in the lower Susquehanna Valley, where speeds will be

.SYNOPSIS...
Unusually cold air will remain in place through Monday. A major
winter storm is expected to bring a moderate to major snowfall
for much of Central Pennsylvania Monday night through Tuesday
night. After a period of lake effect snow during mid-week and
brief high pressure at the end of the week, a very active and
unsettled pattern will begin.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 11 PM THIS EVENING/...
Adjusted grids some for flurries across the north, and cloud
cover.

Prev...
High pressure will provide another mostly dry and cold day today
across the Commonwealth. Diminishing, cold northwest flow
across the unfrozen lakes of Huron, Michigan and Erie will still
keep a few flurries going over the Northwest Mountains with
little if any additional accumulation there.

High temps will be just a few degrees higher than Saturday.
Late morning and afternoon stratocu development from the lakes
will clear out by Sunday evening over all but the northwest

Highs will range from near 20F north to the lower to middle 30s
southeast.

.SHORT TERM /11 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/...
Did lower low temperatures and dewpoints tonight, as skies
clear.

Some high and mid clouds late, but did slow things down.

For Monday, not a lot of change, mainly a degree here and
there.

Earlier discussion below.

With clearing skies temps will again drop into the single digits
and teens...as 1034 MB sfc ridge axis traverses the region. The
high passes off the coast early Monday as coastal front and
secondary low pressure start to organize along the Mid atlantic
coast.

No significant changes overnight to overall thinking.
High pressure to north gives a quiet day on Monday ahead of a
significant late- winter storm (Miller-B type) system. Track
will determine where the highest totals will fall. Expect an
area of 6+ inches over the CWA with higher amounts possible
mostly likely over eastern portion of CWA. GEFS shows a fairly
robust snow across the CWA...and the latest ECMWF has increased
QPF back to previous totals across the central mountains with
0.8" water equivalent forecast from 00z Sun run...after having
previously backed off with a farther offshore track. Bottom
line...we are still 36 hours before the first flakes fall, and
the parent upper trof is now crossing the northern Rockies...so
fine tuning will be in order through Monday.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
*Late-winter heavy snow risk Monday night-Tuesday

Collaboration with PBZ and CLE resulted in westward expansion
of previously issued Winter Storm Watches, which now cover all
of my counties. some portions of the West Central and Northwest
Mountains may struggle to reach 8 inches in 24 hours, or 6
inches in 12, but a high end Advisory at the least appears quite
likely. With confidence approaching 50 percent for heavy snow
criteria to be met, expanded Watches in collaboration with PBZ
and CLE. The heaviest snowfall should occur between 08z Tue and
15z Tue...when 1-2" per hour rates are expected for several
hours from the pre dawn to 900 AM Tuesday. Overall amounts
expected: 6-8" west...7-9" central and 8-12" east and southeast.
As always with Miller-B systems, dry slot from parent sfc low
will need to be watched as accumulating snow could shut off
quickly from the southwest with an earlier intrusion early
Tuesday. Deformation will keep at least light snow going across
central PA into Tuesday afternoon with the potential for a few
to several more inches where that deformation establishes
itself...most likely along the Highway 11/15 corridor and points
east.

A reinforcing surge of cold air will follow behind the storm
with snow showers Wed-Thu. Temperatures well below average Wed
behind the system with a slow moderation through the extended
but still below average.

.AVIATION /19Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Mid deck was here earlier, but heating of the deep cold air
has resulted in more low clouds, wind, and even some flurries.

18Z TAFS sent.

For 18Z TAFS, slowed down high and mid level clds from the
storm moving eastward from the plains.

Monday looks VFR until very late in the afternoon in the NW,
and after sunset in the SE. A widespread winter storm will then
begin. Heavy snow and LIFR cigs and visbys in +SN are expected
Mon night and Tuesday.

Outlook...

Mon Night-Tue AM...Widespread LIFR in +SN.

Tues PM...SN ending S-N in the east, but continuing in the W.
Generally improving to IFR W and MVFR E.

Wed...Mainly VFR, with residual MVFR conditions in snow
showers, especially in the west and north. Windy.
