...Snow to bring slick travel conditions to much of the area
beginning Christmas Eve...

.A weak storm system across the Great Lakes region will bring 
widespread snow to the area Christmas Eve into early Christmas 
Day. The initial band of snow will likely develop across northwest
Ohio and orient northeastward along the Lake Erie shoreline into 
northwest Pennsylvania. There is still uncertainty in just how far
inland this band will set up. An area of surface low pressure 
will move east of the area Sunday afternoon and evening, snow will
fill in across the rest of the region. Lake-enhanced snow is 
expected across the snowbelt Sunday night as northwest flow 
develops.

There will be a sharp cut off in snowfall totals somewhere across
the northern third of the CWA depending on where the initial band
of snow develops early Sunday. Outside of the snowbelt, areas 
along and north of this line will see a general 2 to 4 inches of 
snow with isolated totals to 5 inches. Within the snowbelt expect
4 to 6 inches of snow with isolated higher totals across the 
higher terrain.

...Heavy lake effect snow expected through Wednesday....

.Lake effect snow is expected to continue through mid week. Lake
effect bands will meander over the snowbelt counties producing
periods of moderate to heavy snowfall with some areas receiving
over a foot accumulation. Winds gusting up to 40 mph at times
will support blowing of snow through this evening. As bitter cold
settles in over the region, look for air temperatures to be in
the single digits Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, and when
combined with the wind it will feel below zero.

  travel conditions. Additional snow accumulations of 6 to 9
  inches, with localized amounts up to 14 inches, are expected
  through Wednesday afternoon. The heaviest snowfall is expected 
  to occur late tonight into Tuesday morning. Additional snowfall 
  is expected Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday. Wind chill values 
  will be near or below zero Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

* WHERE...In Pennsylvania, Crawford county. In Ohio, Lake and
  Geauga counties. The highest snowfall totals are expected in
  northwest Crawford county, southeast Lake and extreme northern 
  Geauga counties.

  western and southern suburbs.

  impact mainly eastern suburbs, while little to no snow is
  expected across the western and southern suburbs. 

* WHEN...From 4 AM to 4 PM EST Tuesday. The heaviest snowfall is
  expected Tuesday morning during the morning commute.

.SYNOPSIS...
A front bisecting the area overnight will begin to move
southeast this morning and allow for cooler air to move across
the region. High pressure will briefly build across the area
tonight but another system will track across the Ohio
Valley/lower Great Lakes for Sunday/Sunday night. A trough will
linger across the Great Lakes into mid week while high pressure
builds across the lower Ohio Valley.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Various snow reports around the CWA this afternoon show that
most areas have received a quick inch of snow with some spots in
NW Ohio closer to the 2-3" mark. With this in mind, have bumped
up snow accumulations for the remainder of this snow event to
have the eastern 2/3rds of the CWA to get an additional inch of
accumulation with some of the higher spots in NW PA to get
closer to 1.5 to 2 inches of snow. Other than that, the back
edge of the snow seems to just be getting to the Toledo area,
and conditions should improve as we continue through the
afternoon and evening.

Previous discussion...Biggest change for today is to account
for some accumulating snow for today. Another wave on the front
is spreading a solid area of precipitation across the area early
this morning. This is predominately rain to begin with and we
still anticipate a change over to snow on the backside. Latest
guidance suggests that across the western edge of this
precipitation will be an area that will be cold enough to
support a several hour period of decent snowfall. Establishing
exact amounts even tricker considering that temperatures are
running a few degrees warmer than they should have been and
therefore will be marginal. A wet ground may also limit early
accumulations. This will be a narrow area only a couple/few
counties wide somewhere between Lorain and Toledo and down
toward Findlay/Marion. Further northwest precipitation will be
light enough to not be much of a concern and too far east it
will be warm for a longer stretch of the precipitation. For now
have gone with an inch to an inch and a half there with all
others under an inch. Freezing temperatures do not reach the
eastern half of the are until closer to nightfall. As of 3 am it
was still 51 degrees at YNG in Trumbull Co. Precipitation will
exit the west by early afternoon and the east by evening. Some
flurries may linger across the snowbelt tonight, but subsidence
in the wake of todays system and temperatures that are not quite
cold enough for true lake effect will limit it. Lows tonight
drop back into the 20s.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
An energetic shortwave will round the base of the upper trough on
Sunday with rapid cyclogenesis occurring along the east coast(near
Boston) by Christmas morning. Although this will focus the stronger
forcing well east of the area, the trough is sharp enough for deep
layer frontogenesis to develop across northwest Ohio and shift east
across the area Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. Models have also
trended slightly westward and deeper with the east coast low and
are now showing an inverted surface trough developing over the
Appalachians and closing off as it moves north towards Buffalo,
before transferring energy to the east coast. Snow is expected to
develop across northwest Ohio by midday Sunday. A pocket of dry air
to the east will delay precipitation across inland northeast Ohio
for much of the day while the lift becomes focused across northern
Ohio. Have slightly lowered accumulations for areas from Marion to
Youngstown closer to an inch, with accumulation of 2-3 inches
farther north and west.

As the deeper moisture and lift decreases late Sunday night,
low level lift ramps up along the northeast lakeshore. This will
keep snow going longer in NE Ohio/NW PA, but best lift will become
focused below the dendritic growth zone so only expecting another
inch or two of enhancement.

Interesting lake effect snow set up to follow as 00Z models runs
have trended towards a longer period of westerly flow across Lake
Erie from Christmas Day all the way into Wednesday. The westerly
flow will favor the greatest accumulations closer to the lake.
Models are showing some spread with regards to timing of an arctic
front Monday afternoon and Monday night. The passage of the front
will have implications for how the lake effect evolves and gets
energized by an increase in moisture and instability. The moisture
depth will eventually become increasingly shallow behind the arctic
front which may be a limiting factor. This is not entirely clear
though as we may have sufficient moisture feeding off
Lake Michigan with the westerly flow to maintain healthy snow bands.
Have increased snowfall totals for Christmas Day in northern
Ashtabula/Erie PA Counties and will need to work on refining the
snowfall forecast over the coming days if models maintain the
favored fetch.

In additions to the snow, Christmas Day will be brisk with wind
gusts of 20-30 mph and wind chills in the single digits. Highs on
Tuesday will not make it out of the teens and any areas that clear
out Tuesday night could approach zero.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Strong high pressure from the upper midwest will finally expand
across the central and eastern Great Lakes Wednesday night and
Thursday. The trough deepens to the west again on Thursday with low
pressure tracking northeast through the Tennessee Valley. Will hold
onto just a low chance of snow to end the week as the current
track favors areas to the south and east.

.AVIATION /18Z Saturday THROUGH Thursday/...
Widespread snowfall across the area has allowed for IFR/LIFR
conditions for many of the terminals. Snow will continue across
much of the area over the next couple hours, but will eventually
clear out and move east by this evening. The back edge of the
snow has already reached KTOL where the conditions have already
improved to MVFR and some clearing in the clouds may even creep
in to clear out the ceiling later this afternoon. Overall, will
have IFR/LIFR for the next couple hours as the snow moves
through the area. Conditions will improve to MVFR as the snow
clears out and ceilings lift slightly. Western terminals at KTOL
and KFDY could even see VFR as clouds are scattering out across
NE Indiana and SE Michigan and may creep into NW Ohio. Winds
will be out of the northwest for the first half of the TAF
period but will shift around to the northeast on Sunday morning.
The next system will then begin moving across the area Sunday
afternoon and will have more snow and more non-VFR conditions.

OUTLOOK...Non-VFR overspreading the terminals in light snow
Sunday afternoon through Sunday night. Non-VFR lingers across
northeast OH/northwest PA through Wednesday.

.MARINE...
Northerly winds of 10-15 knots this morning will back to the
northwest later today as low pressure over the Ohio Valley tracks
northeast into New England. A ridge will build over the lake tonight
but will be short lived as another area of low pressure tracks up
the Appalachians into the eastern Great Lakes Sunday night.
Northerly winds will develop again Sunday and increase to 15 to 25
knots as they shift to northwest with the passage of a cold front
Sunday night. This area of low pressure will quickly shift to the
east coast on Monday but a trough will remain across the Great Lakes
region. An Arctic cold front will cross the lake Monday night and
winds will reach 30 knots, with possibly a brief window of gales.
Will keep the forecast at 30 knots for now and keep an eye on
model trends. At a minimum, Small Craft Advisories will be needed
late Sunday night into Tuesday on the eastern two thirds of the
lake with a shorter window on the western basin.
