.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure over the eastern great Lakes will move east
tonight. A fast moving and weak clipper low pressure system will
cross the area overnight. This quick hitter will be quickly
followed by a second clipper Friday Night. Reinforcing Arctic
air will spread across the area this weekend and into next
week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Will go ahead and issue the Lake Effect Snow Warning for Erie
County PA and the Ashtabula County lakeshore. These areas have
the best chance to see significant lake snow starting late
morning or early afternoon Friday as the boundary flow becomes
westerly behind the weak clipper. Many of the meso models have
had run to run consistency with a meso low out over the lake
which may hold up the lake band for a while but it should
eventually make it ways to the lakeshore. When it does come
onshore, the lake snow could be heavy with 1 to 2 inch an hour
snowfall rates as the inversion is progged to be high with
steep lapse rates in the dendritic snow growth zone, good low
level convergence and some lingering synoptic upward motion. It
remains to be seen whether the band may drift back offshore
Friday night ahead of the next clipper as the flow tries to
become a little more southwesterly. Less confident of the other
zones currently under the watch and will continue the watch for
Lake, inland Ashtabula, and Crawford County PA.
Original NEAR TERM Discussion...
A shortwave will cross the area tonight. The stratus has
already overspread much of the area as mid level moisture moves
in from the west. The cloud deck will drop this evening, at
which point we can expect some light snow to the entire area
tonight. This fairly weak and moisture starved feature is
expected to produce an inch or less of accumulation. The snow
will begin later this evening in the west, reaching the I-71
corridor around midnight, and early morning for Erie to
Youngstown. Temperatures will not be as cold as last night,
however they will be in the single digits. The cloud shield will
help reduce radiation and moisture advection will increase dew
points.
Light snow from the clipper system will make a natural
transition over to lake effect.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
A second deeper and more southern clipper system will cross the
area Friday night. This will bring a about an 1 to 2 inches
widespread snow. The lake effect will become reinforced Friday
night into early Saturday where the westerly flow favors Lake to
Erie Counties. Best estimates on band development puts the
heaviest snow once again along the Erie lakeshore.
Additional cold air will be infiltrating the region for the
weekend. Lake effect will be ongoing Saturday with with west
flow and the best convergence along the east lakeshore. But a
wind shift to the west-northwest in the wake of the clippers
cold front will disrupt this. A wedge of drier air too will help
slow things down for a bit. A second significant trough crosses
Saturday evening bringing the wind around to the northwest.
With ample moisture to work and the northwest flow, the entire
snow belt will be affected. Dry air really works on the lake
effect by Sunday morning, but snow showers will likely continue
across the Ohio snowbelt. The troughiness continues into Monday
and so does the snow chances. The entirety of the event will
have a high snow to water ratio which will favor quick
compaction.
Outside of the snowbelt, the clipper will bring light snowfall early
Saturday.
Temperatures will continue to be a big concern and so will wind
chills at times. After 'mild' temperatures Saturday approaching 20,
but likely falling short, Sunday and Monday high temperatures will
only be in the lower teens (with some single digit highs possible).
Saturday night and Sunday night we may have issues with wind chills
and the possible need for headlines.

The arctic madness continues through the long term forecast
period. A large upper trough remains anchored over the eastern
CONUS with several shortwaves moving through the broader flow.
One of these shortwaves will be exiting the area to the east on
Monday night, setting up northwest flow over the region for
Monday night into Tuesday. This will produce even more lake
effect snow over the region to start the new year. Behind the
exiting shortwave Tuesday afternoon, a surge of dry air will
move into the region and will quickly shut off the lake effect
Tuesday afternoon and keep the area dry through Wednesday
afternoon. Another shortwave will begin moving across the
midwest on Wednesday and amplify the flow for the remainder of
the long term forecast. This shortwave will support a surface
low that will deepen as it progresses across the Great Lakes
region. My only concern with the extended guidance is the
placement of the low and if much of the area my be in the dry
slot for Wednesday night and Thursday...so have left pops
somewhat low for now. However, lake effect is sure to occur
behind the low and therefore have higher pops in the snow belt
areas.
As for temperatures... it's all frigid and all well below normals
for the start of January. Areas with lake effect and residual clouds
will be warmer on Tuesday and Wednesday, but areas of northwest and
north central Ohio will be lucky to have low temperatures above zero
if it happens. The warmest day of the long term is probably
Wednesday with the enhanced cloud cover with the approaching trough
with balmy temperatures in the mid to upper teens. Thursday could be
a doozy with the shortwave overhead and a closed 510 low at 500mb.
Temperatures Thursday night are the coldest of the long term with
the guidance mean of -5 to 5F across the area and that's with a bias
to climatology. If you haven't started bundling up for the winter,
it'll probably be a good New Year's Resolution for you to start.

.AVIATION /00Z Friday THROUGH Tuesday/...
Ceilings and visibilities will come down tonight as a
relatively weak and fast moving clipper low pressure system
crosses the area. The snow will come in bursts but generally be
light but visibilities will drop to IFR at times overnight. The
snow will move east of the area on Friday with some lingering
snow showers in the morning. Lake effect snow will develop
Friday afternoon but probably only at KERI where IFR conditions
will likely develop. Elsewhere, MVFR ceilings may linger.
Another clipper low pressure system will reach northwest Ohio by
very late afternoon or early evening.
OUTLOOK...Non-VFR likely Friday Night into Saturday in snow.
Non-VFR likely northeast Ohio and northwest PA Saturday into
Sunday in lake effect snow showers.

High pressure over the lake will shift east tonight. A clipper
coming across the Great Lakes tomorrow will increase the southwest
flow on the lake Friday enough to be in need of a small craft
advisory by afternoon. Winds will shift to the west late Friday
night as the cold front with the clipper crosses and then become
north-northwest for Sunday as another trough crosses the lake. The
lake will likely not settle enough to eliminate the need for a small
craft advisory until Sunday when winds begin to diminish. Northwest
winds will shift to the southwest between Monday and Tuesday as the
large high from the northern Plains slides across the lower Ohio
Valley. Cold temperatures remain and ice growth will continue across
the western basin and along portions of the the shoreline.
