.A developing storm system across the Ohio Valley will bring
widespread snow to the area today and tonight. The initial area
of snow will develop across northwest Ohio by midday and will
spread across the rest of the area going into the evening hours.

An extended period of conditions favorable for moderate to heavy
lake effect snowfall is possible from Monday afternoon through
Wednesday. The area that will be most impacted will be Erie
County Pennsylvania.

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure located over the central Appalachians will slide to the
northeast tonight. High pressure will briefly build in over the area
on Sunday morning, but will quickly dissipate as a secondary
surface low moves over the Ohio Valley for the second half of
Christmas Eve into Christmas Day. Lake effect snow will then
develop over the snow belt region for Monday and will continue
through the middle of the week as high pressure builds over the
Ohio Valley.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
No changes to the current forecast as it is on track.

Previous discussion... The pesky low
pressure system that brought a quick quarter to half an inch of
rain, followed by a quicker 1 to 3 inches of snow, this morning
will move east out of the area tonight. The back edge of the
snow is along the Ohio/Pennsylvania border as of 4pm and will
quickly clear the area over the next couple of hours. High
pressure building in from the west is allowing for conditions to
improve across the area with perhaps some sun peaking through
in the Toledo area late this afternoon. However, this high
pressure will be short lived tonight as the upper trough moves
in from the west and redevelops a new surface low over the Ohio
Valley for Sunday. This low will track northeast over the
Appalachians, leaving much of northern Ohio and NW PA on the
northwest side of the system.

For now...the initial band of snow will likely develop across
northwest Ohio and orient northeastward along the Lake Erie
shoreline into northwest Pennsylvania. There is still
uncertainty in just how far inland this band will set up, but it
seemingly likely that it will impact the northern two tiers of
counties. As a surface low moves east of the area Sunday
afternoon and evening, snow will fill in across the rest of the
region. Lake-enhanced snow is expected across the Snowbelt
Sunday night as northwest flow develops. The one limiting factor
seems to be an area of dry air that will wrap into the low over
the SE portions of the CWA and will limit snow totals from
getting too out of hand.

There will be a sharp cut off in snowfall totals somewhere across
the northern third of the CWA depending on where the initial band
of snow develops early Sunday. Outside of the Snowbelt, areas
along and north of this line will see a general 2 to 4 inches of
snow with isolated totals to 5 inches. Within the Snowbelt
expect 4 to 6 inches of snow with isolated higher totals across
the higher terrain. With this in mind, have issued a winter
weather advisory for a majority of the CWA, with the exception
being the SE areas of the CWA, where the aforementioned dry air
may keep snow totals low.

Temperatures throughout the period look to be close to
climatology for the end of December.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Lake-effect snow will be ongoing Monday morning across far northeast
Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania as northwest flow continues across
the area. By the afternoon high pressure will move eastward into the
Tennessee Valley, which will cause the winds to back a little more
to the west, shifting the lake-effect snow up the lake shore into
northwest Pennsylvania. Winds will continue to remain out of the
west with little change in direction Monday night through Wednesday.

Significant lake-effect snow is possible from Monday evening through
Wednesday. Extreme lake-induced instability is expected with nearly
uniform flow up through the inversion height of around 7,000 feet.
Monday night and Tuesday are the most favorable time periods. As we
head into later Tuesday night and Wednesday the inversion will lower
a bit as drier arctic air moves in, but sufficient lake-induced
moisture should remain in the lower levels. This direction would
favor heavy snow across the northern half of Erie County, including
the lake shore. A Lake Effect Snow Warning will almost certainly be
needed for Erie County PA, and potentially Ashtabula County
depending on whether or not the flow will favor far northeast Ohio
getting impacted as well.

Christmas Day will be brisk with wind gusts of 20-30 mph and wind
chills in the single digits. Highs on Tuesday will not make it out
of the teens and any areas that clear out Tuesday night could
approach zero. Highs Wednesday will be in the lower to middle
teens.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
In a nutshell the extended forecast is cold and snowy, although the
timing of the systems remains in doubt.   Both models continue with
lingering lake effect in the snowbelt.  But this far out I will just
continue with chance pops. After that models go in different
directions. The GFS tracks a weak low across the Central Lakes
Thursday night followed by an arctic blast on Friday. ECMWF on
the other hand holds off the low and the front while tracking a
coastal low along the SE Coast Friday. By 00z Sat ECMWF 850mb
temps -5 c to - 9c while the GFS is a good (bad) 10c colder.
Since the previous forecast leaned toward the ECMWF solution see
no reason to flip flop at this time. Superblended the temps for
Friday and Saturday and brought snow into the area on Friday.

.AVIATION /06Z Sunday THROUGH Thursday/...
A combination of MVFR and VFR for the rest of the overnight.
Some lingering MVFR exists across the east and may be hard to
get rid of. Across northwest OH, behind a subtle cold front,
MVFR ceilings should slowly expand into TOL and possibly FDY.
Conditions will deteriorate on Sunday as widespread synoptic
snow and IFR conditions overspread the terminals after noon for
TOL/FDY, 2p for CLE/MFD and after 4p for ERI. Common snow
totals look to be 2 to 4 inches by 12Z Monday. The low center
will track up the Ohio Valley with west winds beginning to pick
up near the end of the TAF.

OUTLOOK...Non-VFR continues across the area through the rest of
Monday night and then lingers across northeast OH/northwest PA
through Wednesday in lake effect snow.

.MARINE...
A ridge will build over the lake tonight but will be short lived as
another area of low pressure tracks up the Appalachians into the
eastern Great Lakes Sunday night. Northerly winds will develop again
Sunday and increase to 15 to 25 knots as they shift to northwest
with the passage of a cold front Sunday night into Monday. This area
of low pressure will quickly shift to the east coast on Monday but a
trough will remain across the Great Lakes region. An Arctic cold
front will cross the lake Monday night and winds will reach 30
knots, with possibly a brief window of gales. Have kept the forecast
around 30 knots for now and will continue to keep an eye on model
trends. At a minimum, Small Craft Advisories will be needed late
Sunday night into Tuesday on the eastern two thirds of the lake with
a shorter window on the western basin.
