Area Forecast Discussion

128 PM EDT Sun May 7 2017

.SYNOPSIS...
Surface low pressure will continue to move slowly northeast away
from the area. High pressure will build slowly southeast out of
central Canada to Indiana and western Ohio by Tuesday and then
shift northeast into the central Great Lakes. Low pressure will
move east to the Ohio valley by Wednesday night. Otherwise, a
weak ridge of high pressure will persist over the local area
through the end of the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Low pressure at the surface will continue to slowly move northeast
of the area today while high pressure starts to inch in from the
west. This should cause the threat for shra in NW PA to lessen
overall. The cyclonic flow still present thrut the atmosphere will
lead to cumulus developing as daytime heating starts to occur which
will slow the warming. Highs should mostly be in the low to mid 50s,
except upper 40s for the eastern parts of our NW PA counties.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Upper level ridge over the Mississippi Valley region will
advance slowly east over the next few days and will continue to
enhance the upper level low trapped over the eastern United
States. Unfortunately, the upper level low pressure system will
remain persistent through the next few days and keep a cold air
advection pattern going through this period.

Tonight, clearing will take place over much of the western and
southern areas of the forecast area. Winds are expected to go
light as we decouple. There is the possibility for temperatures
dropping into the lower 30s in the west overnight. Therefore,
will go ahead and issue a freeze watch for the western portions
of the forecast area. Will also mention patchy frost in the west
as well. Temperatures could drop to around 33 degrees in the
east but expecting some residual lake effect cloud cover to
drift over the area during much of the night. This will help
prevent any frost threat. Day shift will have to monitor
clearing trends throughout the day to determine whether to
expand frost/freeze headlines.

Monday will see fair weather return for sure as high pressure
builds southeast out of central Canada along with drier air.
Some slightly warmer air will push into the region as well. Rain
will spread into the area from west to east Wednesday night in
advance of the next low pressure system and associated warm
front. Very little recovery in the temperature department will
take place over the next few days with the cold air mass in
place.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The region will remain under the influence of northwest flow aloft
during the extended as the upper low over New England retrogrades
westward with time. Models still show the upper low deepening across
the western Great Lakes to end the week as it merges with energy
moving around the ridge. At the surface, the weak boundary that will
be across the Ohio Valley has trended southward since yesterdays
runs. Despite variable cloudiness later this week, it now appears
that moisture struggles to return to the lower Great Lakes and a
drier trend is noted in the long range models. Will have chance pops
in the forecast by next weekend as the trough deepens over the
region but models have been showing poor run to run continuity so
confidence is relatively low in the strength of this feature.
Temperatures will be near but slightly below normal for most of the
extended unless we end up with more sun than forecast.

.AVIATION /18Z Sunday THROUGH Friday/...
High pressure continues to build in from the west this
afternoon, keeping the area dry and relatively problem free.
Some diurnal cumulus is present over the area with some thicker
lower clouds still remaining over far NW PA with the northwest
flow over the lake. For the most part, believe that scattered
cumulus will continue through the evening between 4-6 kft before
dissipating. Some broken lower clouds will persist slightly
below 4kft at KERI for the next couple hours but will eventually
scatter out and lift up by evening. Gusty northwest flow will
continue this afternoon before settling down later this evening.
Otherwise, no issues are expected through the overnight and
into Monday.

OUTLOOK...VFR conditions expected.

.MARINE...
Small Craft Advisories remain on Lake Erie east of the islands
today, extending through this evening for areas east of Willowick.
Northwest winds starting off near 20 knots this morning will
decrease to 15 knots or less on the west half of the lake today and
continue to decrease on the east half of the lake tonight. Waves
will start off near 5 to 7 feet east of Cleveland and gradually
decrease 2 to 4 feet tonight.

Generally good marine conditions expected for much of the week. High
pressure will build east over the lake during the Monday to
Wednesday time frame. A northeast wind will develop to end the week
as a series of low pressure systems move through the lower Ohio and
Tennessee Valleys.
