High tides created by strong onshore winds will also enhance the risk for flooding at the coast where drainage systems will fill with sea water, especially several hours around high tide. High pressure will remain to the north through tonight.
Meanwhile, powerful Hurricane Irma will approach the south
Florida coast late tonight into Sunday, then move into southern
Georgia by Monday night.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Nudged highs down a degree or two most areas per going trends.
Thick cloud cover at the coast is helping to keep temperatures
down.
A flash flood watch will likely be issued for much of the area
this afternoon.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Tonight: Rain chances will increase along all coastal and
southern zones as the moisture flux slowly presses NW. By
late tonight, we indicate likely POPs along GA barrier islands.
Far northern and northwest areas will most likely remain dry.
It will be windy on the beaches tonight with a very tight
pressure gradient setting up, buoyed by the pre-existing
moisture gradients that currently exist.
The forecast remains relatively unchanged since the last major
forecast package Friday afternoon. The latest forecast for Irma
still brings it north through mainland FL Sunday and Sunday
night, then into south GA on Monday.
Wind: We expect the high pressure area to remain north of the
region through Monday. The pressure gradient will continue to
tighten over the area well in advance of the system. On Sunday,
breezy to windy conditions are expected. Late Sunday night there
will be increasing chances for tropical storm conditions to
affect far south GA zones. Monday will bring the strongest
winds across the region. Although somewhat stronger winds are
anticipated in southeast GA closer to Irma's trajectory, the
gradient between the inland high pressure will produce rather
strong winds even across southern SC on Monday. Although the
greatest chance for tropical storm conditions will be across
southeast GA, we are showing sustained winds approaching 35 kt
in most of our SC zones as well. Strong winds will continue into
Monday night, primarily across southeast GA as the circulation
shifts northwest.
Severe Weather: Models continue to show some instability moving
into coastal SC/GA late Sunday night, coincident with increasing
0-1 km helicity values. Stronger instability and shear spread
across eastern portions of the area during the day Monday,
especially southern SC. Conditions will be favorable for
tornadoes during this period.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Irma is expected to move quickly northwest away from the area
Monday night. The heavy rainfall will quickly end from south to
north. Relatively quiet weather will persist for the remainder
of the week.

.AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Primary concern:
* Wind
Mostly VFR through 18z Sunday. Gusty winds in excess of 20 kt
will likely linger for much of the period.
Extended Aviation Outlook: Significant flight restrictions and
very strong winds expected to impact the terminals Sunday night
through Monday night due to impacts from Hurricane Irma. Mainly
VFR Tuesday and beyond.

.MARINE...
Tropical Storm watch for the coastal waters has been upgraded to
a Tropical Storm Warning. A Hurricane Watch has also been issued
from Edisto Beach to Savannah out 20 nm and Savannah to Altamaha
Sound out 60 nm. Tropical Storm Watch issued for Charleston
Harbor.
A most complex scenario was evolving with a pinching gradient
along coastal zones while the hurricane is also responsible for
some gradual increase in synoptic flow initially. The stronger
flow looks to be tonight where we have gusts increasing to 40 KT
in the waters with sustained winds nearing TS force. Small
craft should remain in port as winds build through tonight and
seas build to 7-9 ft in near shore waters while 10-12 ft seas
are forecast in GA waters 20-60 NM offshore.
Dangerous marine conditions are expected over all of the coastal
waters Sunday through Tuesday before conditions gradually
improve as Hurricane Irma moves away from the area.
Rip currents: Long period swell associated with Hurricane Irma
will continue to impact the surf zone into early next week. This
will result in a high risk for powerful and dangerous rip
currents.

.HYDROLOGY...
A Flash Flood Watch will likely be issued for much of the area
later this afternoon.
Strengthening northeast to east flow in the 0-6 km layer will
gradually yield rising Precipitable Water values across the
region as Hurricane Irma moves into FL and eventually GA through
Monday night. Due to the residual stalled front across south GA
and the increasing tropical moisture off the Atlantic, there is
the potential for a Predecessor Rain Event on Sunday across
southern GA. The latest QPF numbers are showing the greatest
potential for excessive rainfall across far southern GA
including McIntosh County. Sunday night into Monday, the in-situ
dry air should be completely overtaken by the deep tropical
moisture and PWATs will exceed 2" in all zones by daybreak
Monday. PWATs may exceed 2.5" during the day Monday. Periods of
heavy rainfall will overspread much of the forecast area late
Sunday night and continue into Monday evening before tapering
off from south to north.
Our latest StormTotalQPF is showing widespread 4-6" totals in
southern SC and 6-10" or more in southeast GA, highest far
south. Significant freshwater flooding will be possible as a
result of these rainfall amounts, especially since much of it
will fall during a fairly short 12-18 hr period. The best chance
for significant flooding will be along the coast due to the very
high tides expected for the next several days. If torrential
rainfall coincides with a particularly high tide, for example
midday Monday, then very significant flooding may result.
Beyond the immediate flash flood threat, river flooding will
become a concern Tuesday or Wednesday. Some river points could
exceed major flood stage if current QPF numbers verify over the
headwaters.
&&
.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Northeast winds will continue to strengthen over the coastal
waters on Sunday, eventually becoming east and strengthening
further by Monday. These forecast wind directions/speeds favor
significant storm surge along our coastal areas, with the
highest tide levels with the midday Monday high tide. Not only
will the winds produce growing tidal surge, but growing onshore
swells will also enhance the tidal anomalies. Although the
astronomical tide values could be worse, we are still in a
somewhat elevated tide cycle following a full moon, so the
underlying tides are also somewhat high.
The combination of these factors will likely produce moderate to
major coastal flooding along the entire SC/GA coast with both
the Sunday midday and Sunday night high tides. With tides this
high and large breaking waves impacting the shore, significant
beach erosion could occur, along with some property damage and
crucial access routes being cut off.
All eyes continue to be on the high tide midday Monday. This is
when the greatest surge values will coincide with the largest
onshore swells and the higher of the two daily high tides. Surge
models continue to indicate significant coastal flooding with
this tide, potentially yielding 3-6 feet of inundation above
ground level in low-lying coastal areas. Such tide levels, when
combined with the large breaking waves, would result in
significant coastal flood damage, beach erosion, and cut off
access routes to/from barrier islands. Flooding problems would
only be exacerbated if torrential rainfall also occurs around
this time.
