.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Update...
High pressure will begin to move east of the region today while
low pressure developing to the southwest draws a warm front
toward southern New England. Cloud cover will increase, from
southwest to northeast, across the forecast area today. Light
overrunning snow will also begin to expand across southwest
portions of the forecast area this afternoon. Retreating high
pressure will slow the advance of any snow across northern and
northeast portions of the forecast area through the afternoon.
High temperatures will range from around 10 north, to the mid to
upper teens interior Downeast with lower 20s along the Downeast
coast. Have updated the forecast mostly to adjust for current
conditions along with afternoon temperatures.
Previous Discussion...
A complex low pressure system will be approaching from the
southwest today. An initial wave of low pressure will slide into
southern New England this afternoon as the first wave of
precipitation overspreads the Downeast region as snow late today
into this evening. Light snow will spread into the north
tonight. This first low will dissipate overnight as the second
more organized low approaches on Saturday with another surge of
precipitation. Steadier snow will spread north. Warmer air
moving into the Downeast region will change precipitation over
to rain Downeast. A mix of sleet and freezing rain will occur
over central areas on Saturday as the surface low near the coast
results in cold air damming allowing subfreezing air to hold
onto the surface. Snow north, mix in central areas and rain
Downeast will move away Saturday evening as low pressure quickly
tracks away through the maritimes.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
High pres is set to settle over the area Sunday(Christmas Eve)
and then slide to the ne Sunday night. The airmass is not
expected to be all that cold w/seasonal norms for Sunday's high
temps. Clouds will be on the increase Sunday afternoon as low
pres moves through the northeastern US. A second area of low
pres is forecast to develop off the southern New England coast
Sunday night and lift to the ne passing across the eastern side
of Nova Scotia Christmas Day(Monday). The 00Z suite of numerical
guidance including the Canadian Global/GFS and ECMWF show this
latest track along w/their respective ensemble mean solutions.
This track would allow for the heaviest precip to be across the
Downeast region.
The precip will be in the form of snow as temps will be cold
enough all the way to the coast. Confidence is high for
measurable snowfall across the entire CWA w/the highest amounts
across the Downeast region. A pattern setting up such as this
one lends some support for a trof axis to set up across the w
Sunday night w/the snow breaking out intially. The snow is then
forecast to overspread the entire CWA on Christmas Day as the
low moves through the Gulf of Maine. The 00Z ECMWF and GFS
support this setup. This does not look to be a major event
w/snowfall amounts attm expected to be 3-5 inches Downeast and
1-3 inches elsewhere. This is all dependent on the latest track
and a shift either way will play a role in snowfall amounts.
Cooler for Christmas Day w/daytime temps averaging the mid teens
across the n and w while further s, temps are forecast to be in
the low to mid 20s.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The low is expected to move away Christmas night w/the snow
tapering off to flurries and then some partial clearing.
High pres s of the state will ridge across the region on Tuesday
w/some partial sunshine and cold temps w/readings below normal.
A weak low pres system is shown by the long range guidance to
pass across the Gulf of Maine Tuesday night into Wednesday. This
system has the potential to bring some light snowfall to the
region. The ECMWF is the most aggressive w/this system while
the GFS and Canadian Global are weaker and keep light snowfall
across the Downeast coast. Attm, decided to use a blend and go
w/a drier forecast similar to the GFS and Canadian solution and
show 20-30% pops along the coast and outer islands.
The more prominent item to note is the frigid airmass that is
forecast to pour into the region on Wednesday and continue into
late week. This will be the coldest airmass of the season so
far. Daytime temps on Wednesday look like they could be around
zero across the n and w while further s, readings are forecast
to struggle to get out of the single numbers and low teens.
Colder for Thursday w/daytime temps possibly remaining below 0F
for the northern 1/2 of the CWA while central and downeast areas
struggle into the single numbers. A nw wind on Thursday could
lead to some very cold wind chills.

.AVIATION /17Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
NEAR TERM: VFR conditions are expected across northern areas
through early tonight. Across Downeast areas, expect VFR
conditions into early afternoon with MVFR/IFR conditions
developing later this afternoon. IFR/LIFR conditions are
expected Downeast tonight, with conditions lowering to MVFR/IFR
levels across northern areas overnight. IFR conditions are
expected Saturday into Saturday evening throughout the region
with snow north, freezing rain in central areas and rain
Downeast. Conditions should improve to VFR late Saturday night
into Sunday.
SHORT TERM: VFR for all terminals on Sunday. Conditions look
like they will deteriorate from sw to ne Sunday night into
Christmas Day w/MVFR-IFR as low pres moves into the Gulf of
Maine. The wx element will be snow w/the heaviest amounts for
KBGR and KBHB. Conditions are expected to improve to VFR by
later Christmas night(Monday night) as the low pulls away from
the region.

NEAR TERM: Winds/seas will increase to small craft advisory
levels later this afternoon through early tonight. Small craft
advisory conditions are then expected overnight into early
Saturday afternoon. A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect
from late this afternoon into early Saturday afternoon. A SCA
may be needed again for gusty northwest winds Saturday night.
Visibilities will lower in developing snow this afternoon, with
snow changing to rain tonight with rain or a wintry mix
Saturday.
SHORT TERM: SCA conditions expected for this period right
through Christmas Day into Tuesday. SCA conditions on Sunday
will be mainly for hazardous seas as a swell component hangs on
w/seas 7-8 ft in the morning and then dropping back for a time
later in the day. Winds will pick back up Sunday night into
Christmas Day w/sustained winds of 20-25 kts being forecast.
Seas are expected to build back to a range of 6-8 ft during this
timeframe.
