Radar showing last bit of snow exiting into New Brunswick as low
pres continues to pull away. Satl IR imagery showed clouds
starting to break up especially across the central and downeast
region. Northern areas still seeing clouds but expecting those
clouds to break up later this morning as nw winds take hold.
Temps/dewpoints adjusted to fit the current conditions.
Will be looking at the next storm expected for Christmas Day
later on.
Previous discussion...
Low pressure is currently developing across the southeastern
portion of New England. This system is expected to rapidly
intensify tonight as it moves along the Maine Coast then
northward into the Maritimes. Strong cold air damming is
currently in place across the region near the surface however
warmer air is moving in aloft resulting in freezing rain and
sleet across the southern portion of the region. The mixed
precipitation will slowly move northward later today and this
evening into central and some northern areas. Along the coast
and in interior Downeast, a coastal front will push inland and
warm temperatures there well above freezing. In the far north
most of the precipitation will be in the form of snow. For pops
and QPF and precipitation type have used a 50/50 blend of the
GFS and ECMWF. Precipitation type from the precipitation from
thickness tool.

High pressure will be building south Sun night with north winds
bringing in colder temps. At the same time s/wv currently dropping
thru the Intermountain west wl round the base of the trof and induce
sfc cyclogenesis off the mid-Atlantic coast Sun night. Overrunning
wl dvlp aft 06z Mon with snow continuing thru Christmas Day.
Medium range guidance in very good agreement on taking the low from
Cape Cod 12z Mon into the Bay of Fundy by Mon aftn. Other than some
very slight deviations btwn guidance, particularly the 12z EC,
consensus shows a track vry close to the coast. All guidance
averages a 12-14 mb drop in central low pressure within 6 hours as
the low deepens rapidly.
Temps looks to be cold enuf for all snow across entire CWA given
current track of the low. Exception is the very far outer islands
where warm nose may be able to briefly allow sleet to mix in around
daybreak on Monday but cntrl and ern sections of CWA may see locally
heavy snow. H7 low wl be tracking along coastal Downeast with best
Fgen frcg expected to the north and west. Expectation is that some
mesoscale banding wl set up, lkly in the cntrl sxns of the FA with
best cross-hair signature in the aftn. Hv added in heavy snow to
fcst for Downeast and interior Downeast from 15z-21z Monday. Winds
expected to gust to 25-30kts Mon aftn as low heads into the Bay of
Fundy and hv added in blowing snow. Travel conds expected on
Christmas day will be all but impossible as this will be a fairly
significant system for the area.
