Watch...which is in effect from Tuesday afternoon through
Wednesday morning.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...7 or more inches within 12 hours or 10 or 
  more inches within 24 hours.

* LOCATIONS...Central Maine Highlands and Upper Penobscot Valley.

* HAZARD TYPES...Snow.

* TIMING...Noon time Tuesday through noon time Wednesday.

* IMPACTS...Hazardous travel is expected.

* WINDS...Northwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

* VISIBILITIES...one quarter to one half mile at times.

* TEMPERATURES...upper teens to 20s.

.SYNOPSIS...
An Arctic cold front will move through Friday night, followed
by bitter cold weather over the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
11:00 AM Update...Forecast remains on track. Some high clouds
are increasing in central and Downeast areas while the north
remains clear.

Previous discussion...
Colder air continues to filter in from the northwest early this
morning. Neutral advection during the today, then another push
of even colder air tonight.

Atmosphere has dried out and skies are mostly clear early this morning.
Still breezy, but not nearly as windy as yesterday. A system
will be passing just to our south today. Think that any
precipitation should stay southwest of Bangor and south of our
waters. The north edge of the clouds from the system will reach
at least Downeast though. Further north, can't rule out an
isolated snow shower toward afternoon, but don't expect anywhere
near the abundant squall activity we had Thursday. A few snow
showers may persist into the evening.

Another push of cold air tonight, this push being brutally cold
and at levels extremely unusual for this late in the season.
Wind chills later tonight easily below zero throughout, and
below 20 below north of Bangor, so have issued a wind chill
advisory. Extreme northern Maine may even get close to wind
chill warning criteria of 35 below late tonight and tomorrow
morning.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Arctic air mass will be in place on Saturday. 850 mb
temperatures are expected to fall to around -32c across the
crown of Maine by 12z. Highs across far northern areas only
expected to be in the single digits above zero and low to mid
teens across downeast. Gusty northwest winds will make it feel
even colder. A wind chill advisory has already been issued for
northern areas into Saturday morning. An upper low will cross
the region early Saturday and then track into the Canadian
Maritimes late in the day. Some spokes of energy rotating around
the upper low my touch off a few snow showers across the far
north during the afternoon, otherwise it will be a party to
mostly cloudy day. Saturday night will be a very cold night with
lows falling below zero across the north and zero to 5 above
across downeast. Wind chill advisories will once again be needed
across northern areas Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Sunday will be another unseasonably cold day but not as cold as
Saturday under partly to mostly sunny skies. An isolated snow
shower will still be possible across the far north. Northwest
winds will still be on the gusty side but not quite as gutsy as
Saturday.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Extensive Canadian high pressure will build toward the Sunday
night through Monday with dry but continued unseasonably cold
temperatures. Attention then turns to a potential significant
winter storm for later Tuesday into Wednesday. This system has
the potential to bring several inches of snow and wind to the
region. Will highlight the threat in this mornings Hazardous
Weather Outlook. The storm will move away from the region on
Thursday with a few lingering snow showers expected.
Temperatures through the period will remain below normal for
this time of year.

.AVIATION /16Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
NEAR TERM: Generally VFR today and tonight and much less windy
than Thursday. Can't rule out isolated snow shower bringing
conditions down lower, but there will be much less activity
than Thursday.

SHORT TERM: Generally VFR conditions through the period except
possible MVFR in sct snow showers across the far north on
Saturday. Tuesday will see the potential for snow moving into
the region with IFR or lower conditions in developing snow and
northeast winds.

.MARINE...
NEAR TERM: Lighter winds today over the waters, with winds and
seas falling back below small craft levels by late morning.
However, very cold air moves in tonight, and have issued a gale
warning beginning late tonight, and a heavy freezing spray
warning from Schoodic west with a freezing spray advisory east
of Schoodic.

SHORT TERM: A gale warning has been issued through Saturday
evening for northwest winds gusting as high as 35 to 40 kt.
Winds should then decrease to small craft advisory levels by
Sunday. A heavy freezing spray warning has been issued through
Saturday evening.
