.SHORT TERM...valid for Tdy and Fri...

Snow has been slowly diminishing overnight as mid level
frontogenesis weakens over the region and the jet stream is
positioned west to east across northern Wyoming. We believe
we have reached a point where our winter weather highlights
(warnings, Advisories) have probably outlived their usefulness.
Therefore, we will drop the current warnings and advisories to
make way for the next round of snowfall and associated highlights
to affect our CWA.

As mid to upper flow backs to the west and southwest we will see
some warm air advection work into our southwest which may cause
some light snow to pick up over our SW mountains today. We may
even see some flurries as far out east as Billings since we will
continue to have an easterly low level flow beneath the warming
mid level air. Overall though, it should be a fairly quiet day,
though on the cold side with highs in the 30s.

The potential for snow will increase across our west tonight into
Friday as a Pacific low digs along the coast, allowing for a
moistening southwest flow into our area (w/ colder air remaining
in place at surface). Western mountains could see another period
of significant accumulating snowfall beginning tonight and
continuing into the weekend. For the lower elevations, our west
gets more interesting Friday night through Saturday evening as
Pacific trof moves inland ejecting energy across our region in the
southwest flow aloft and a jet streak aloft provides additional
upper support. Models produce a period of decent snowfall

3-6 inches (or more) for many locations west from a Roundup-
Billings-Sheridan line, and at minimum winter weather advisories
will likely be necessary. However, details in mechanism strengths
and placement remain uncertain. For now, we have opted to issue
Winter Storm Watches for the SW mountains from 6 AM Friday
through Saturday night. This will catch the periods of heaviest
snowfall rates in the high country. We will increase messaging
for potential snowfall at lower elevations through other products

Cold and snowy pattern this weekend into next week.

Saturday morning, a cold front will begin to push across The
Divide and into central Montana. Good agreement among the global
models on likely snow chances across all of the central and
western zones during the day on Saturday. Given the forcing and
moisture associated with this system, areas from Harlowton to
Billings to Hardin should see several inches of snow, while
mountains and foothills locations will be in the 4 to 8 inch
range. Snow chances linger in the foothills and western zones on
Sunday morning.

Sunday morning, a strong low pressure system begins to move in
from the Pacific northwest. Ahead of this low, jet max slides into
southern Montana. This forcing will keep chance for snow showers
ongoing in the foothills and western zones into the late morning.
Moisture transports becomes limited as trough slides eastward and
snow chances taper off by afternoon.

As the low pressure system pushes eastward, a cold front slides
across the area on Monday bringing our next chance for
accumulating snowfall. Models begin to diverge with the timing of
the Monday system. The GFS is quicker to push the system out on
Monday night, while the Euro keeps the low pressure system in the
area into Tuesday.

In general highs will run from the mid 20s to mid 30s with lows
in the teens through the early part of next week. Walsh

Low CIGS IFR/MVFR will continue to be an issue at all terminals
as low stratus remains fixed over the area through the day. Areas
of light snow will also lower visibilities to MVFR at times. Snow
will overspread the area from W to E tonight continuing the
