.SYNOPSIS...
In the wake of last nights warm frontal passage...it will be
noticeably milder across the region today with temperatures
averaging 15 to 20 degrees higher than those from Friday. The
milder airmass will further come into play with our weather
tonight and Sunday as it will help to support some mixed
precipitation. A major coastal storm will then set us up for
accumulating snow Sunday night into Monday...with significant
accumulations expected southeast of the lakes.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Temperatures across Western New York and the Finger Lakes will
continue to creep through the upper 30s to around 40 degrees by this
afternoon. The uptick will be gradual, as the bulk of the warm
advection associated with last night's warm front  has already
occurred. This front has pretty much stalled across the forecast
area, as evidenced by considerably cooler temperatures in the North
Country this morning. The North Country, deeper into the cold air,
should only top out in the low to mid 30s. Otherwise, it should
remain cloudy, but dry with only passing virga as mid-level moisture
passes overhead along the frontal boundary, with little other
synoptic forcing to generate precipiation.

Conditions will deteriorate across the western counties tonight...
as a weak sfc low within an inverted trough will approach from the
Ohio Valley. After experiencing partly cloudy skies for part of the
day...clouds will thicken from the southwest during the evening with
light precipitation gradually making its way north across the
Pennsylvania border after midnight. As the weak sfc low nears during
the wee hours of the morning...increased baroclinicity ahead of the
system will generate moderately strong H925-70 frontogentic forcing
which will lead to more widespread pcpn over all of the western
counties.

While a significant amount of liquid equivalent is not anticipated
with this system tonight...relatively 'warm' air in the lowest
portion of the boundary layer will promote mixed pcpn...including
the risk for some freezing rain. The most prone area for freezing
rain tonight will be north of the Southern Tier...including the IAG
Frontier...Genesee Valley and western Finger Lakes region. A winter
weather advisory will be in effect for this potential. Meanwhile for
sites east of Lake Ontario...it should be pcpn free through the
night.

Temperatures tonight across the western counties will be nearly
steady in the low to mid 30s...while the mercury will settle into
the mid 20s across the North Country.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
...Significant snows possible east and southeast of the lakes
Sunday night into Monday...

During the course of Sunday...complex low pressure extending from
Lake Superior to the Ohio Valley at the start of the day will slowly
push eastward...with its axis reaching a rough Watertown-New York
City line by the end of the day. As this feature presses eastward...
attendant increases in large-scale forcing and moisture will result
in widespread precipitation finishing its spread across our region
during the morning...then continuing through the balance of the day.

As has been the case the past several days...the main forecast
challenge on Sunday will be precipitation type. While thermal
profiles suggest that the North Country will remain cold enough
to support all snow and a general 2-4 inches of accumulation...
matters further south will be complicated by a layer of above-
freezing air that will work in above colder air at the surface.
North of the Southern Tier...this will lead to a period of mixed
precipitation during the morning...before modest warming of the
boundary layer forces a changeover to mostly rain by early
afternoon. This will probably result in a period of minor ice
accumulations of up to a tenth of an inch before the changeover
to rain takes place. Due to this...a winter weather advisory has
been hoisted from the Niagara Frontier eastward into the Finger
Lakes through Sunday morning.

As we progress through Sunday afternoon and the axis of the low
passes to the east of our longitude...colder air will begin to
be drawn across our region in its wake. This will result in any
rain south of Lake Ontario mixing with snow later on in the
afternoon...before changing back over to all snow areawide by
early Sunday evening.

Sunday night the complex low will consolidate into yet another
powerful Nor'easter off the New England coastline. While its
absolute worst effects will remain to our east across eastern
New York and New England...our region will still be subject to
plenty of wraparound moisture and increasingly colder air
circulating in around the backside of this system. This will
help to generate continued widespread synoptic snows across
our region...with additional accumulations largely ranging from
a few inches across far western New York to as much as a half
a foot or so east of Lake Ontario...where stronger large-scale
forcing and both upsloping will come into play. Meanwhile east and
southeast of the lakes...increasing amounts of lake enhancement
will also come into play as our airmass remains moisture-rich
while growing steadily colder. Coupled with a well-aligned strong
westerly flow that will veer to west-northwesterly over time and
the resultant orographic enhancement...this will also result in
areas of enhanced snowfall east of Lake Erie and southeast of
Lake Ontario...where nighttime accumulations in excess of a half
foot will be possible.

On Monday the Nor'easter will undergo explosive cyclogenesis
while slowly heading east and out to sea...which in turn will
allow high pressure and much drier air to slowly ridge eastward
into our region from the Upper Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. The
corresponding loss of deeper moisture and arrival of large-scale
subsidence will result in lingering lighter synoptic snows tapering
off from west to east after producing another inch or two of
accumulation...and areas of lake-effect snow southeast of the
lakes notably diminishing in strength and organization during
the day...though not before dropping another 2-4 inches of
accumulation (the bulk of which will fall during the morning
hours).

Given the continued potential for significant synoptic and lake-
enhanced snows east and southeast of the lakes...a Winter Storm
Watch remains in effect for the eastern Lake Ontario region...
while new Winter Storm Watches have also been hoisted for the Monroe-
northern Cayuga county corridor downwind of Lake Ontario...and
Southern Erie/Wyoming counties and the Southern Tier downwind of
Lake Erie. All three of these regions could see as much as a foot
or so of snow by the time everything is said and done on Monday...
with fairly strong west to northwesterly winds of 20-30 mph also
helping to produce areas of blowing and drifting snow that will
only serve to further complicate matters...and drive areas of lake
enhanced snow well inland.

After that...the remainder of this period looks to feature much
quieter weather. The aforementioned ridge will crest across our
region Monday night while bringing an end to any leftover scattered
snow showers...before another modest clipper system drops into
the Great Lakes region on Tuesday and brings lower-end chances
for some snow and rain showers back into our region during the
afternoon...though these should be fairly light in nature and thus
of minimal significance.

Temperature-wise...highs will range through the 30s both Sunday and
Tuesday with the warmer readings (mid-upper 30s) found south of Lake
Ontario both days. In between...Monday will be a colder day as we will
be under the influence of a seasonably cold airmass in the wake of the
Nor'easter...with highs generally averaging around 30 in most places.
Meanwhile...nighttime lows will average in the mid to upper 20s Sunday
night...before pulling back into the teens and lower 20s Monday night.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As we move into the extended portion of the forecast...the passing
clipper system will bring continued chances for some snow showers
both Tuesday night and Wednesday. Current PoPs reflect both the track
of the low, as well as the possibility of some lake enhancement as
temperatures aloft cool late Tuesday night and Wednesday. There is
a narrow spread in model guidance through Wednesday, with the 12Z
GFS/GGEM in good agreement and the ECMWF slightly slower with this
system. The differences are of little consequence at this point, but
become more significant later in the week.

Model guidance diverges significantly Thursday and Friday depending
on whether low pressure across the Gulf states phases with the
northern branch system. Differences stem from the timing with
the slower ECMWF and about one-third of GFS ensemble members
phasing the system. This would result in a strong coastal low
which would reach New England on Thursday into Friday with
widespread synoptic snow possible across the eastern half of the
cwa and some lake enhancement south of the lakes. This said,
the majority of model guidance (roughly two- thirds) does not
phase the system, with low pressure stalling across the Canadian
maritimes bringing a progressively colder flow Thursday with
some light lake effect snow showers south of the lakes, followed
by high pressure on Friday.

The forecast will use a consensus of guidance for late in the week,
with mainly chance POPs accounting for each of these scenarios.
It probably will take a couple more days before model guidance
settles on a definitive solution since subtle differences in
timing are critical to the phasing of the two systems. Either
way, high temperatures will be below normal with daytime highs
in the upper 20s to lower 30s. Persistent wind and clouds will
limit radiational cooling, with lows expected to be near normal
despite the fairly cold air aloft.

.AVIATION /16Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Despite the passage of a weak surface low...VFR conditons will
be in place across the majority of the region today. The
exception will be across the North Country...where VFR cigs this
morning will lower to MVFR levels for the midday and afternoon.

Tonight...another area of low pressure will approach the region
from the Ohio Valley. This will lead to lowering cigs with MVFR
anticipated for most areas by 06z. The lower cloud cover will be
accompanied by a mixed bag of rain...sleet and possibly freezing
rain over the western counties.

Low level thermal profiles over the western counties will be
very conducive for significant icing later tonight and early
Sunday. This could lead to local delays due to de-icing
procedures.

Outlook...

Sunday...MVFR/IFR with mixed precipitation changing to
rain...before changing back over to snow Sunday night.
Monday...VFR/MVFR with scattered snow showers...with these more
numerous and capable of IFR southeast and east of Lake Ontario.
Tuesday...Mainly VFR with a chance of snow showers.
Wednesday...Areas of IFR with snow showers likely.

.MARINE...
A weak sfc pressure gradient will keep winds and waves below small
craft advisory today and tonight.

On Sunday...low pressure becoming more organized over Pennsylvania
will generate easterly winds that could produce some very choppy
conditions over the western portion of Lake Ontario. Otherwise winds
and waves will remain below SCA criteria.

Significant deepening of a storm system off the New England coast
Sunday night and Monday will result in freshening winds back across
the Lower Great lakes. High end small craft advisories are all but a
certainty for this period...with frequent gale force gusts possible
over the open waters.
