Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
242 PM EST Tue Feb 14 2017
.SYNOPSIS...
Mountain snows will continue through early this morning before
ending for a short period of time. Another low pressure system
will bring more snow to the region starting tonight through
Wednesday night. More mountain snow showers persist through
Friday. Quieter weather returns for the weekend with
temperatures moderating.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 1239 PM EST Tuesday...Haven't made any major changes
throughout the morning and on the current update. Temperatures
have fallen back in line with the original forecast and beyond
that, everything is progressing along fine with today's
forecast.
Previous Discussion...Surface and upper level ridging with
drier weather and near normal temperatures today. Some partly
sunny skies this morning won't last too long with more clouds
upstream and moving into the region this afternoon.
Upper level trough with closed 5h/7h digs over the Great Lakes
region today along with surface low pressure system both
tracking Southeastward towards our forecast area. Light snow
will begin to reach our Northern New York zones by this evening.
Light snow spreads Eastward overnight, continuing Wednesday and
Wednesday night. Potent shortwave energy rounds out base of
upper trof and will be overhead Wednesday and this when
categorical pops are mentioned. Later Wednesday surface low
forms off the New England coast with energy shifting offshore.
Convective snow showers/squalls are expected during the
afternoon with steep low level lapse rates in place.
Temperatures Tuesday night drop into the teens in the Northeast
Kingdom with generally 20s everywhere else with warm air
advection associated with clipper low. Generally 1-2 inches of
snow can be expected tonight. Another 1-3 inches of snow will
fall Wednesday with deepest moisture and best forcing across the
area, can't rule out some graupel with convective showers. Then
Wednesday night another 1-3 inches of snow, therefore issued a
winter storm watch for the Northeast Kingdom. At this time looks
like advisory level snows.
&&
.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
As of 430 AM EST Tuesday...A closed upper low will be over the
north country Wednesday night as a surface low pressure area
deepens east of the New England coast Wednesday night. ECMWF and
GFS models show an inverted surface trough extending northwest
from the surface low pressure area which will likely enhance
snowfall potential over northeast Vermont Wednesday night into
early Thursday. It looks like a winter weather advisory or
perhaps a low end winter storm warning may be needed for
northeast Vermont later today. Still some uncertainty as to
snowfall amounts, given the longer time range of snowfall. Thus,
a winter storm watch was issued at this time. This will be a
fairly long term period of mainly light snow from Tuesday night
through early Thursday. Expecting snow to taper off to snow
showers during the day on Thursday, as the low pressure area
moves into the Canadian maritimes on Thursday.
&&
.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 241 PM EST Tuesday...Seems we'll finally get a break in
active weather as the extended period looks relatively quiet
with only a couple minor features to deal with. To end the work
week we remain under cyclonic flow on Friday as low pressure
over the Canadian maritimes continues to exit northeast with
residual moisture in the low levels producing some scattered
light snow showers, especially across the higher terrain of
northern Vermont. High pressure then builds into the region for
Friday night and largely dominates the North Country's weather
thereafter through the remainder of the forecast period except
for Sunday/Sunday night where weak shortwave energy and a
surface low passing to our north could produce some rain/snow
showers across northern areas, but overall impacts should be
negligible.
Temps through the period start relatively close to normal for
Friday/Friday night with highs ranging through the 20s and lows
in the single digits to teens, but thereafter a noticeable
warming trend is expected with highs each day in the 30s,
possibly 40s on Sunday, and lows mainly in the 20s.
&&
.AVIATION /20Z Tuesday THROUGH Sunday/...
Through 18z Wednesday...VFR conditions to start the TAF period.
Partly sunny skies from this morning are giving way to mid-
level ceilings moving back into the region right now. Light snow
moves into the area from West to East tonight and MVFR ceilings
and visibilities are expected after 03z. Snow will be heavy at
times with periods of IFR/LIFR at all stations from 10Z onwards.
Winds will be light and variable through this evening and
remain under 10 knots. By Wednesday morning winds will be
southerly at 05 to 10 knots for the rest of the period.
Outlook 18z Wednesday through Saturday...
18Z Wednesday through 12Z Friday...Periods of light snow or
snow showers with IFR/MVFR conditions likely.
12Z Friday through 00Z Sunday...Mainly VFR as a ridge of high
pressure builds into the region.
