.SYNOPSIS...
Periods of rain with pockets of freezing rain across the
interior will persist into this evening followed by a dry and
unseasonably mild day on Wednesday. A significant winter storm
will bring the potential for heavy snowfall to much of southern
New England late Wednesday night into Thursday. High pressure
builds in with drier colder air from Thursday night through
Friday night. Two weather systems then affect us over the
weekend, bringing a chance of snow Saturday and rain or snow
Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
235 pm update...
Bulk of snow now confined to far north central and northeast
MA, which should be changing over to rain/freezing over the next
few hours with some sleet possible as well.
Otherwise, for the rest of the afternoon expect periods of rain
on the coastal plain but freezing rain across portions of the interior.
We also are watching shallow low level cold air that may drop
temps a few degrees through early evening across far northeast
MA. This may result in temps falling back into the upper 20s
across Northern Essex county and icy conditions for the evening
rush hour. Worst of the freezing rain expected across the
interior high terrain where up to one quarter inch of ice
accretion is possible into this evening.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
Tonight...
Warm frontal boundary and surface wave lift northeast thru the
night. This combined with dry slot overspreading the region will
result in low top showers and drizzle over the area. Warm sector
overspreads much of the region with temps rising thru the 40s at
night. However subfreezing temps will support freezing rain into the
evening hours across the Worcester Hills and the East Slopes of the
Berks...diminishing after midnight as shallow cold air slowly erodes
from top down. Warm air invading the region will also lead to patchy
dense fog.
Wednesday...
Very mild start to the day thanks to warm sector lingering across
the region. Cold front sweeps across the region late morning-early
afternoon. At 18z very warm airmass remains over RI and southeast MA
with 925 mb temps ranging from +6c to +10c depending on model of
choice. With the wind shift to the west boundary layer becomes well
mixed to at least 925 mb and possibly 850 mb. This combined with
some breaks of sunshine will support highs in the 50s to possibly
near 60.

Overview and model preferences...
Relatively progressive pattern becomes established following an
arctic influence wave passage late Wed night into Thu. While
downstream blocking does occur E of Greenland and over Iceland,
the trend toward a positive EPO even as PNA/AO remain negative
suggest the flow pattern across the CONUS and into the W
Atlantic is nearly zonal. Therefore, this allows for the passage
of several shortwaves in such a manner that they potentially
impact S New England. The first Thu, cold enough for snow but
will depend ultimately the track of low pres S of the region.
The next is much weaker as the confluent flow across the NE
continues to open the initial wave. Still some Pacific influence
could yield another round of light precip as the clipper
associated with this feature makes its closest passage. Finally,
yet another strong and slowly phasing Pacific/Arctic wave
arrives by early next week, but given potential interactions
exact track remains a low confidence forecast, however the
gradual resurgence of the SE CONUS ridge, suggests this may be a
warmer wave passage. Given the mesoscale differences inherent
to each wave passage will lean more heavily on ensemble means
rather than any individual deterministic model run.
Details...
Wed night into Thu...
Initial influence of Arctic high pres will allow for rapid
cooling of the airmass in advance of acute upper lvl shortwave
which will initiate cyclogenesis off the mid-Atlantic coast
along a stalled cold front. Final location of this front will
have significant impact on exactly how close the resulting low
pres passes to S New England. Current mean is just S of the
40/70 benchmark but some members including the operational NAM
are within the bench mark. However, as the wave continues its
deepening process, the strength of the resulting low pres will
also determine how far N the precip shield can reach. This can
bee seen in the difference between the 00Z operational GFS and
ECMWF, the former is closer, but suggests less QPF while the
latter is further S and strengthens earlier. In any case
combination of overrunning and weak mid lvl F-gen N of the low
pres will be enough to establish a band of precip within an
airmass of PWATs generally around or less than 0.75 inches. Snow
is expected in this case as even H92 temps are generally colder
than -4C by 12Z. The final passage will define how far N
plowable snow occurs, but agree, given the latest updates that
the best chance would be mainly S of the border between RI/CT
and MA and across SE MA. Gradient will likely be tight, but this
will become better refined with better agreement following the
system over the next 24-36 hours. QPF plumes still suggest a

temps warm, but begin the day in averaging colder than -16C.
Therefore highs will struggle to break the freezing mark,
possibly topping out only in the mid 30s or lower. Mixing
suggests wind gust up to 25-30 mph through the afternoon,
reinforcing the cold.
Fri night into Sat night...
Weak clipper system will cross the region along with modest
warm advection. PWATs are quite low suggesting moisture is
limited with this weakening wave. However, could see widespread
light SN initially until low lvls warm (H92 reaches near 0C to
+2C by Sat evening) since dynamic cooling looks limited given
the weak lift. Some suggesting weak inverted troughing and ocean
effect as the parent low pres shifts E. QPF mean is generally
0.1-0.2 inches suggesting any SN would be sub advisory. Overall
less of a risk for headlines than the Thu wave, however still
some time to watch this feature.
Sun into Mon...
Tricky setup regarding yet another wave, although with more
influence from Pacific vortex. This suggests a stronger system,
which could slide W of the region especially of the current
strengthening of the SE CONUS ridge is realized. Cold air locked
in initially with high pres N of the region possible reaching
between 1035-1040. Given all this factors, and the expected
uncertainty with any system beyond 100 hours, will need to
monitor for yet another mixed precipitation event potentially.
Far too early to make any specific case as thermal profiles will
depend on the complex interactions of the arctic, Pacific and
SE CONUS airmasses.
Early next week...
Indications suggest that in any particular case regarding the
system for Sun-Mon, colder air will once again filter into the
region as the longwave trof across E Canada is reinforced, so
another return to seasonable or even below seasonable conditions
is possible, if even likely given current ensemble means.
