.SYNOPSIS...
Scattered thunderstorms will move north of the Massachusetts
border by early evening. A cold front will cross the region
Saturday with numerous showers and thunderstorms. A few of the
storms may be strong and accompanied by strong wind gusts,
heavy rain, and frequent lightning. Small hail is also possible.
The cold front will move offshore Saturday night and usher in
much lower humidity for Sunday with plenty of sunshine. Low
pressure will push across the region Monday, bringing another
round of showers and thunderstorms which may produce locally
heavy rainfall. The low exits during Tuesday, with a return to
dry and mild conditions into mid week. Another low may approach
late next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
10 pm update...
Primary change with the late evening update will be to hoist a
dense fog advisory for Nantucket and Cape Cod. Preliminary
satellite data (specifically the 10.3-3.9 micron product) shows
a discrete marine fog back slowly drifting NNE and should begin
to impact the E half of Cape Cod within the next hour.
Mesoscale guidance shows this expansion well, and even suggests
we may need to hoist one for S coastal MA and maybe RI as well,
but would like to see this trend first, as stratus may allow sfc
mixing to mitigate actual fog development. Will continue to
monitor this through the night. Otherwise, the forecast remains
on track, did slow down the onset of rain/thunderstorms in the
morning per latest model trends, but only by a couple of hours
with this update as destabilization is expected late tonight.

Previous Discussion...

Should remains dry until near daybreak. Low clouds should
develop away from the shore around or shortly after midnight.
Areas of fog will continue, especially along the south coast.
Toward daybreak, the leading edge of showers and thunderstorms
ahead of a cold front may approach areas west of the Connecticut
River Valley. After about 6 or 7 AM, K indices and Theta-e
values increase across the east slopes of the Berkshires.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
Low clouds and areas of fog may take some time to burn off
Saturday morning as higher clouds increase, especially along the
south coast. It will remain humid but amount of cloudiness will
probably hold temperatures in most locations in the upper 70s to
possibly near 80 in some eastern interior spots.

Clouds on Saturday will tend to inhibit destabilization.
Nevertheless, there are a few red flags. Some models are
depicting areas of 1500 to 2500 of j/kg of SBCAPE and mid level
lapse rates, although not especially noteworthy, look to be
generally near or a tad less than 6.5 deg C per km. Other
classic stability parameters point toward at least marginal
instability with total totals near to a little above 50,
showalters 0 to -3, and K indices of 34+ from multiple models
including the sometimes instability muted ECMWF. This is
combined with an anomalously vigorous trough for this time of
year with an unsettling negative tilt look. An upper jet of 100+
KT noses toward far southeast New England and places a
significant portion of the forecast area in the left exit
region. Vertical shear of about 35 to 40 kt is indicated. And as
one might surmise, moisture is not an issue. In fact
precipitable waters increase to 1.7 to almost 2 inches depending
upon model run of choice.

As a consequence, believe there is a sufficient combination of
shear/forcing and instability to result in the potential for
strong to even severe thunderstorms with strong wind gusts
probably the greatest threat. Given the high precipitable waters
and history of thunderstorms the past few days, we also
anticipate the threat of locally very intense rainfall, although
these storms should move significantly faster than those of the
past couple of days. There is a risk of localized flooding,
especially urban areas, where any multiple cells may train.

In addition, a suggestion of a possible wave along the front may
enhance low level helicity values in a low lifting condensation
level (LCL) environment. Hence, we cannot rule out the risk of a
tornado or two, especially if any discrete rotating cells should
be observed.

For Saturday night, any lingering showers or thunderstorms in
southeast sections should move offshore early in the evening
followed by cooler and drier air. Dewpoints may fall 10 to 15
degrees during Saturday night to produce a dramatically
different feel to the air mass by Sunday morning. Temperatures
should drop into the 50s outside of major coastal urban areas,
including to the lower 50s in portions of NW MA.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Highlights...

* Beautiful summer's day Sunday with mild temps and low humidity
* Low pressure passing near or south of the region brings areas of
  rain Monday into Tuesday.
* Unsettled conditions may return sometime late next week

Overview...

Noting a continuation of long wave broad troughing across about
the eastern half of the U.S., while high amplitude H5 ridge
continues along the Pacific coast into western Alaska into early
next week. May start to see H5 vortex across James/Hudson Bays
start to dig a bit into eastern Ontario, which may allow the
long wave trough to become a bit more amplified but progressive
with its positive tilt. 12Z models and ensembles continue to
signal unsettled conditions around the Monday into Tuesday
timeframe as a weak surface reflection along the stalled front S
of New England passes.

Details...

Sunday...
Dry and comfortable late summer conditions expected as high
pressure builds near and S of the region. W-NW winds will gust
up to 20-25 kt thanks to excellent low level mixing through H85
(at least), mainly across the higher terrain and along the
immediate S coast and islands. Lots of sunshine as well as low
dewpoints, mainly in the 50s but a few spots drop to the upper
40s, so will be a great day to be out of doors. Highs will run
as much as 10 degrees below seasonal levels, mainly across the
higher terrain of NW Mass. A few spots there may not break 70,
though most locations will.

Sunday night through Tuesday...
H5 short wave wraps around the broad troughing from the Great
Lakes eastward during this timeframe. Clouds will increase Sun
night, and a few leading showers may push into western areas
toward daybreak. The short wave and associated surface
reflection works steadily eastward, with best chance for precip
by midday Monday through Monday night. PWATs up to 1.6 to 1.8
inches, so could see periods of rain. Limited instability across
the region, so no mention of thunder at this time. Have
forecasted 0.75 to 1.5 inches QPF, with the heaviest rain Monday
afternoon and night. Expect highs only from 70 to 75 as winds
shift from light S to N-NE by Tue morning as the low passes,
though this will depend on the exact track of the low which is
somewhat in question.

Tuesday night through Friday...
Mainly dry Tuesday night through Wed night as high pressure
passes across the region.

Lower confidence for Thu and Fri as the high moves offshore.
Increased model solution spread as another system may spread
light precip along its northern edge as it passes. GFS looks
most aggressive in pushing another low S of the region Thu
night-Fri. Kept only slight chance POPs going for Thu-Thu night
and dry on Fri, but again low confidence during this timeframe.

.AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Tonight/...

Today...Moderate confidence.
Mix of early morning IFR/MVFR conditions with a mix of low vsbys
mainly Cape/Islands and low CIGS remainder of S New England
terminals. These may break initially, then give way to MVFR CIGS
mid morning into the afternoon ahead of an approaching front.
12Z - 20Z W-E mix of heavy SHRA and TSRA with strong winds
possibly even small hail. These begin to shift E of the region
after 20Z.

Tonight...High confidence.
SHRA/TSRA should be fully offshore after 00Z with clearing all
terminals to VFR during the overnight hours. Winds shift to the
W with gusts to around 20 kt especially after midnight.

KBOS Terminal...Moderate confidence.
Brief period of low end MVFR and upper end IFR CIGS this morning
may briefly lift to VFR after sunrise, then give way to another
round of MVFR CIGS ahead of a front. Best chance for SHRA/TSRA
with strong winds this afternoon and early evening. Winds shift
to the W overnight, gusts to 20 kt possible after midnight.

KBDL Terminal...Moderate confidence.
MVFR CIGS through much of the morning. Mix of SHRA/TSRA this
morning mainly after 12Z, but should move E between 18Z-20Z.
Improvement to VFR with W winds thereafter.

Outlook /Sunday through Wednesday/...

Sunday...High confidence.
VFR. Dry conditions. West wind 15-20 kt, some gusts to 25 kt
along the S coast through Sun afternoon.

Monday-Monday night...Moderate confidence. VFR to start, then
lowering to MVFR-IFR late, especially Mon night in rain. VSBY
restrictions in locally heavy rain and areas of fog especially
during the nighttime hours. Rain will be heavy at times Monday
afternoon/night.

Tuesday...Moderate confidence.
Mainly MVFR early, then should improve to VFR. Showers tapering
off from SW-NE during the day. NE winds shifting to NW. Patchy
late night fog possible in normally prone valley areas with
MVFR-IFR VSBYS.

Wednesday...Moderate confidence.
Mainly VFR, though could see late night fog develop with local
MVFR-IFR VSBYS.

Southerly flow continues but below small craft thresholds. Fog
will become more extensive again tonight especially along the
south coast with associated low visibilities.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to pass across the waters
late Saturday afternoon and/or early evening. A few could
contain strong wind gusts in addition to dangerous cloud to
ground lightning. The thunderstorms should move further offshore
by mid or late evening.

Wave models suggest that seas offshore will gradually build to
around 4 feet with a risk of a few 5 footers appearing. We are
not confident enough of any 5 foot seas to issue a Small Craft
Advisory at this time.

Outlook /Sunday Night through Wednesday/...

Sunday...High confidence.
Expect W-NW winds gusting up to 20-25 kt on the outer waters,
diminishing Sun night. Fine boating weather with excellent
visibility. Seas may reach 5 ft on the outer waters SE of
Nantucket.

Monday-Tuesday...Moderate confidence.
S-SW winds ahead of low pressure Mon-Mon night, then shifting
to N- NE by Tue. Gusts to around 20 kt Mon night. Visibility
lowered in areas of rain and fog Monday through midday Tue, then
should improve from W-E. Seas 4 ft or less.

Tuesday night-Wednesday...Moderate confidence.
NE winds shift to NW around 10 kt by Wed morning. Patchy fog
with locally reduced visibility Tue night/early Wed, otherwise
good.
