.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure strengthening over the Gulf of Maine will continue
to move off to the east overnight, allowing winds to slowly
decrease along the east coast of Massachusetts. Another low
pressure system is forecast to form off the DelMarVa coast early
Saturday, passing south of the 40N 70W benchmark by Saturday
night. It will produce some snow, mainly over the islands and
south coast. Another strong high pressure area will build toward
New England Sunday through early next week, bringing reinforced
Arctic air to the region.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
1 AM update...
Another bone chilling night out there. With clear skies,
temperatures have dropped to 0 to 5 above as of 1 AM, except 10
to 15 in southern RI and Cape Cod and the islands. High clouds
had already made it into western CT and mid and high cloudiness
will be overspreading the region overnight. Low temperatures
tonight should range from a few degrees below zero to the single
digits above zero.
Ocean effect cloudiness persisted over outer Cape Cod from
Provincetown to Chatham. Radar showed snow showers remaining
20-25 miles northeast of Provincetown, but they were slowly
working their way westward, so will continue to keep a close
eye on these overnight.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
Low pressure over anchors the main trough over the Northeast
USA Saturday. This low moves across Northern New England
Saturday night. Surface low associated with this system
redevelops south of New England Saturday evening and moves off
to our east early at night. Models are similar in showing the
center of the redeveloped low passing about 2 degrees south of
the benchmark before moving out to sea. This suggests most of
the precipitation will fall on the ocean rather than land.
Expect clouds to thicken over our area Saturday morning with
precipitation developing west to east late morning or early
afternoon, then continue Saturday night until the main trough
axis passes to our east around midnight. The highest
precipitation amounts will be over the Islands with up to 0.25
inches, and South Coast with around 0.10 inches. A few
hundredths possible farther north. With the air as cold as it
is snow ratios should be about 20:1 and possibly higher. This
would support an inch or two of fluff most places...and 2-4
inches along the Islands with 2 inches South Coast.
Main change to the forecast is to expand the Winter Weather
Advisory into Cape Cod where southern areas could get 3 inches
from the storm and additional accumulation from ocean-effect
showers on the North-Northwest winds trailing the system.
Max temps on Saturday should come from about 950 mb where temps
will be -10C to -12C. This would support surface max temps of
18-25F, and clouds may keep values a little cooler. We will use
a range of 15-25F, mostly the lower half of this range.
As the snow winds down and skies start to clear, expect temps to
chill into the single numbers inland and teens along the coast.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Highlights...
* Arctic air remains in place through next week.
* A coastal storm may bring some snow to the area Wednesday
night into Thursday, but there is much uncertainty as to how
close to the coast the low will pass.
Discussion...
Medium range models remain very consistent in maintaining a strong
PNA pattern with a western North America ridge and eastern North
America trough through this forecast period. This keeps arctic air
entrenched in southern New England. Shortwave energy dropping into
the long wave trough may initiate coastal cyclogenesis off the mid
Atlantic coast in the Wednesday night or Thursday time frame, but it
is questionable how close to the coast the surface system will track.
Much colder than normal temperatures will persist through the
forecast period. Went a little lower than the model blend for the
Sunday into Monday time frame. Model blends will sometimes not catch
the temperature peaks and valleys during more extreme temperature
regimes. The prolonged cold period ahead may result in considerable
sea ice build up and likely promote continued ice build up along
many streams.
Medium range models including the ECMWF, GFS, UKMET, and Canadian
have backed off on a potential major coastal storm for the
Wednesday night into Thursday time frame. The ECMWF and GFS
ensemble runs similarly depict a clustering of surface low
centers fairly far offshore, but both models have a few ensemble
members close enough to the coast to have significant impacts.
Although the current trend is for a more offshore system, this
is day 6 and so it would not be surprising to see different
solutions as we draw closer to that time frame. For now will
indicate low chance POPs over most of the area for a time
Wednesday night into Thursday.

VFR conditions tonight with increasing mid and high clouds.
Only exception is outer Cape Cod where overcast MVFR CIGS
continue with ocean- effect cloudiness. Clouds lower and thicken
across the region Saturday with MVFR cigs/vsbys in CT, RI, and
SE MA Saturday afternoon and evening, perhaps for a short time
as far north as a BOS-ORH- BAF line. IFR cigs/vsbys in snow are
expected along the South Coast and Islands, perhaps as far north
for a period along a FMH-PVD- IJD line. Skies clear Saturday
night and usher in VFR conditions.
Gusty northwest winds along the coast. Winds increase out of
the northwest late Saturday night across the region.
KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAF. Conditions should be VFR
during most of the time, except a few hours of MVFR ceilings and
vsbys in light snow late in the afternoon/early evening.
KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF. Several hours of MVFR
ceilings/visibilities likely in snow for a time Saturday
afternoon. Otherwise, VFR conditions should prevail.
Outlook /Sunday Night through Wednesday/...
High confidence. VFR conditions expected. Surface wind gusts
from the NW at 20 to 25 knots possible on Sunday and to 20
knots on Monday.

Overnight...
Northwest winds were still gusting past 30 kts along the east
coastal waters as of 1 AM with 5 to 6 ft seas on the eastern
outer waters. Intensifying low pressure over the Gulf of Maine
will continue moving east overnight and this should allow winds
to slowly diminish. A Small Craft Advisory continues for most
waters, gradually ending overnight.
Temperatures and winds will again support potentially hazardous
freezing spray conditions. The best chance for this will be on
the eastern waters, where the winds are strongest.
Saturday and Saturday night...
A coastal storm will develop south of Long Island Saturday and
pass south of the 40N/70W benchmark Saturday night. This will
bring snow to the waters Saturday, mainly afternoon and early
night. Expect reduced vsbys in snow, especially over the
southern waters. Snow should taper off by around midnight.
Wind directions will shift direction during the day, then shift
from the northwest again later Saturday night. Wind speeds will
be less than 20 knots on Saturday, and climb to 20-25 knots
Saturday night. Seas will be less than 5 feet most of the time,
but may linger briefly near 5 feet on the outer waters Saturday
morning, and then build to near 5 feet on the southern outer
waters late Saturday night.
Outlook /Sunday Night through Wednesday/...
Confidence...High
Continued strong cold air advection in a fairly tight NW surface
pressure gradient will likely result in Small Craft Advisory gusts
across most of the waters during this period. Seas will likely
remain near 5 feet in the outer coastal waters more times than not
during this period. Occasional periods of freezing spray are also
likely into early next week.
