.SYNOPSIS...
Arctic high pressure over New York state builds across New
England tonight. Weak low pressure develops over the Gulf of
Maine Friday and then moves off to the east. Another coastal low
pressure forms south of New England Saturday and grazes
Southern New England Saturday night. Another strong high
pressure area will build toward New England Sunday and Monday.
Frigid weather will last through the middle of next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
1250 AM Update...
Ocean effect low cloudiness has spread westward to Hyannis on
the mid Cape and to the tip of Cape Ann. Snow flurries were
being reported at Provincetown, with steadier snow and 1.5 mile
visibility at Chatham. A band of moderate to heavy snow showers
was lurking just a few miles east of Provincetown and Truro.
Snow showers may accumulate up to an inch those areas for the
next few hours before the inverted trough and developing low
pressure heads north into the Gulf of Maine. TDWR radar shows
some elements moving from NNE to SSW in the vicinity of Boston's
south shore. So, we will need to watch for low cloud
development along the MA east coast overnight.
Otherwise, high cloudiness had already overspread western MA and
northern CT with thicker mid and high clouds headed our way.
Cloudiness will increase across the entire region by daybreak.
Temperatures were hovering within a few degrees on either side
of zero across most of the interior. The increase in cloudiness
may be enough to slow the drop in temperatures. Winds have been
diminishing across the region and the Wind Chill Advisory may be
cancelled by the next forecast package around 4 AM.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
Friday...A shortwave from the Great Lakes moves across New
England Friday. As mentioned above, this forms an offshore low
that is pushed past Nova Scotia. It also maintains lift over New
England, generating mid and high clouds during the day while the
lower levels remain too dry for clouds. The wind diminishes
during the day, so the wind chill should also diminish. The
cold air lingers, so max surface temps should be in the teens
with a few lower 20s along the South Coast.
Friday night...The Great Lakes shortwave moves off through Maine
Friday night. Fair and dry weather much of the night, but with
increasing clouds toward morning. Temperatures should modify,
with values in the single numbers most places and lower teens
South Coast.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Highlights...
* Very cold temperatures will persist through the forecast period as
arctic air remains across the region
* Low pressure will pass south of the region Saturday into Saturday
night, but light snow accumulation possible into south coastal

* Another low pressure system may develop off the SE U.S. coast
which could affect portions of the region late Wed or Thu
Overview...
12Z model suite in pretty good agreement early in the forecast,
through about Monday with the continued cold pattern in place.
The flat, progressive mid level pattern remains across the lower
48, with systems quickly crossing the region. Pieces of the
arctic cold pool lingering across central and eastern Canada
will push across the region through the long term, with the
coldest air looking to invade the region Sunday and New Year's
Day.
Continue to see low pressure developing off the mid Atlantic
coast Sat night, then pushing E early Sunday morning. With the
cold air locked in place, could see light snow accumulations
during this timeframe as the northern edge of the precip shield
moves across. Still a fast flow, so should not last too long,
though the arctic air through the layer may enhance the snow
with high snow-to-liquid ratios.
Noting a major shift in the steering pattern across North
America around the middle of next week. Several members of the
model suite are signaling a high amplitude long wave trough
digging southward from central Canada toward the Gulf Coast,
while H5 heights start to rise across the eastern seaboard. This
also puts the storm track close to the region. Models continue
to signal low pressure developing somewhere off the SE U.S.
coast and riding it up the coast. Timing and track differences
continue, mainly due to the position and amplitude of the long
wave trough to the W. Current forecast suggests the potential
for precip to push across the region around late Wed or Thu.
Still quite a bit of model solution spread with this system,
being so far out in time. However, it does bear watching to see
the evolution of the upper level steering pattern and the low
development. Low confidence continues.
Details...
Saturday and Saturday night...H5 cutoff low/cold pool working
SE through the Great Lakes, as short wave around the base of the
low pushes E. Models continue to develop low pres off the mid
Atlc coast late in the day, with the northern fringe of the
precip shield moves in. Best chance for precip during Sat night
and the early morning hours of Sun. Will see some light snow
accumulations across a good portion of the region, but the
somewhat higher amounts expected along the S coast, Cape Cod and
the islands. Expect precip to taper off from W-E through around
midnight, but will linger a bit longer across the Cape and
islands.
Sunday through Tuesday...Large high pressure will build across
the eastern two-thirds of the country, with continue W-NW flow
in place keeping the arctic air feeding into the region. Expect
dry and cold conditions in place during most of this period.
Winds will kick up with another surge of arctic air moving in
during New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Could see gusts up to
15-25 kt especially on 1/1 which will bring wind chill values
down. May need wind chill advisories for this potential.
Temps may recover somewhat (mainly in the teens and 20s vs. the
single numbers and teens) on Tuesday. Winds will gradually
diminish as they back to W.
Wednesday and Thursday...Watching for potential coastal low to
develop which may affect the region.
