.SYNOPSIS...
Storm over Nova Scotia is moving off to the northeast. Strong
arctic high pressure will move from the northern Plains Tuesday
to the Great Lakes Wednesday and Thursday and to western New
England Friday. It will bring dry weather but very frigid
temperatures. A coastal storm may develop and spread snow into
southern New England Friday night and Saturday. Another frigid
arctic high pressure will follow Sunday and New Years Day.

715 PM update...
Mainly clear skies across the region this evening, with
a few low clouds here and there. A few flurries were trying
to make it across Litchfield County, CT but are not expected
to make it much farther east of the higher terrain. Winds had
significantly diminished, except at higher elevations, like
Worcester, and on Cape Cod and the islands, where gusts were
still in the 30-40 mph range. Wind Advisories remain posted
for Cape Cod and the islands through midnight.
Previous discussion...
Low pressure moving off through Nova Scotia. Isallobaric rises
over Cape and Islands moving offshore. Second rise center
approaching Montreal will pass well to our north. The pressure
change has been aiding in some wind, but gusts have been more
tranquil than the values of this morning. With pressure rises
diminishing, expect most winds to remain below advisory levels.
Exception is Cape Cod and Islands, where the effects of the
pressure-rise will be in the vicinity for a few more hours.
Mix of clouds and clear spots over and upstream of Southern New
England. Expect this will continue overnight. With fresh snow
cover, will knock off about 3F from guidance min temps.
Combination of wind and temperature will bring wind chill values
into the single digits, so bundle up!

A persistent upper ridge off the U.S. west coast will extend
all the way into the Arctic with a corresponding upper trough
across south central and southeast Canada, the Great Lakes, and
northeast states through the period. The trough is expected to
amplify and head southeast across New England by next weekend,
phasing with a frontal wave of low pressure off the coast. The
main impacts will be a prolonged period of frigid cold
weather...dangerous at times...and a chance of snow for New
Years weekend.
Wednesday and Thursday...
Sunny days and clear nights as strong high pressure builds in
from the northern Plains and Great Lakes. Main story will be the
frigid weather with highs Wed. in the teens, except lower 20s
southeast MA and RI. Lows Wed. night, with clear skies and a
snow cover, will plummet to -5 to 0 in northern MA and single
digits above 0 elsewhere, except teens on the islands. A Wind
Chill Advisory may be needed for northwest MA, where the Wind
Chill Index could reach 15 to 20 below zero by Thursday morning.
It gets colder still on Thursday with model consensus 850 mb
temperatures of -20C to -24C. Expecting high temperatures to
remain in the single digits in northern MA and 10 to 15
elsewhere, except 15 to 20 southeast MA and southern RI.
Thu night, the actual temperature will drop to -10 to -5 degrees
north of the Mass Pike with near 0 in Boston and Hartford.
Like the previous shift, have gone a few degrees below model
blend values, given ideal radiational cooling and snow cover.
Ocean Effect Snow Potential... Temperature difference of 20+
degrees Celsius between ocean surface and 850 mb may set the
stage for one or two bouts of ocean effect snow showers across
the outer Cape and the waters east of Cape Ann, if winds
develop enough of a northerly component. The best chance for
this occurring would be Thursday night, when models indicate a
very subtle inverted trough just off the coast.
Friday and Saturday...
Wind chill advisories may be needed in northwest sections of MA
Friday morning.
The large scale pattern is favorable for coastal cyclogenesis
as one or two of the stronger short wave troughs interact with a
tight baroclinic zone just off the United States east coast.
ECMWF ensembles are very emphatic about a low that bombs out to
our east and heads into the Gulf of Maine/maritime provinces on
Saturday and remains there on Sunday. The GFS ensembles exhibit
more variability but several point to similar deepening. It is
too far in the future to have a good deal of certainty on the
impacts for our region. However, assuming northern and southern
streams do phase, there is the potential for plowable snows. The
most significant snows would likely be in eastern portions of
southern New England. A lot will depend on how far south the
baroclinic zone resides. The colder the air over New England,
the farther south that frontal boundary will be. Even if the
main storm remains offshore, there are indications that a Norlun
inverted trough feature could impact the region, which would
produce some snow in eastern sections. For now, we have high
chance PoPs, with likely PoPs over the waters, south and east of
the region. It should be noted that snow to liquid ratios are
likely to be greater than 20:1. This fluff factor could lead to
higher accumulation for smaller QPF values.
Sunday and Monday...Frigid high pressure once again builds in
from the west. Highs both days in the teens and lows both nights
ranging from 5 below zero north to the single digits above zero
south. Wind chills will also be an issue both days, especially
in northern zones.
