The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* Portions of northern Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode 
  Island, including the following areas, in northern 
  Connecticut, Hartford, Tolland, and Windham. In Massachusetts, 
  Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Essex, Franklin, Hampden, 
  Hampshire, Middlesex, Nantucket, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk, 
  and Worcester. In Rhode Island, Block Island, Bristol, Kent, 
  Newport, Providence, and Washington. 

* From Sunday morning through late Sunday night

* Moderate to heavy rain will impact all of Southern New England 
  Sunday through Sunday night. Forecast rainfall on the order of 
  2 to 4 inches with locally higher amounts can be expected. 
  Greater confidence along the east slopes of the Berkshires 
  seeing the highest rainfall amounts. 

* Excessive rainfall, especially with any thunderstorms, could 
  lead to localized flash flooding at some of the faster 
  responding streams and rivers in the region. Localized urban 
  flooding is also possible.

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure building into the region resulting in a stretch of
quiet weather tomorrow. Then a slow moving cold front will
approach on Sunday, while intensifying low pressure moves up the
coast into Sunday night. This low pressure moves into eastern
Canada Monday. Drier and cooler weather moves in behind the
weather system through midweek. A cold front may bring a few
showers late week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
10 pm update...

No major changes to the forecast this evening as rather quiet
weather continues. Brought the forecast back in line with observed
trends.

Previous Discussion...

High pressure will remain overhead resulting in clear skies and
light wind. This will help temperatures overnight radiate out.
However, mid-level axis will crest over the region, thus allowing
for WAA to begin to move overhead. This may keep temperatures from
truly dropping. Therefore anticipate temps in the mid to upper 30s
with metro regions remaining in the mid-40s. While a few outlying
regions may be cool enough to develop frost, believe current set-up
will limit widespread frost so will not issue a frost adv for this
package.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH MONDAY/...
Saturday...

High pressure will begin to slide to the east on Saturday. Mostly
sunny and dry weather to start, but clouds will filter in through
much of the day. WAA in the low to mid levels will continue esp at
the 925mb level. BUFKIT soundings do show mixing close to 900-850 mb
so anticipate temps to warm into the upper 60s with some spots
hitting 70F.

Saturday night...

Conditions will begin to deteriorate during the overnight hours on
Saturday. Moist southerly flow will begin to increase ahead of slow
moving cold front from the west. Mid-level moisture will saturate
the column resulting showers around midnight across the west.
Through much of the overnight, precipitation will increase from west
to east as the nose of the southerly LLJ moves into the region in
combination with higher theta-e values. Models and ensembles are
also indicating high moisture transport pushing into the region
during the overnight hours. Not expecting much in the way of heavy
QPF as the better forcing and lift remains closer to the developing
low pressure system.

While LLJ increases aloft, biggest concern is if the winds will mix
down during the overnight hours. 925mb LLJ increases to 30 kts and
with surface temps warming could see some of this wind mix down.
Highest likely hood for this to occur will be across the south coast
and higher terrain of CT where temps are warmer. Could also see
higher winds in the Pioneer Valley where moist adiabatic process
from showers could help mix the wind down. Still less than wind adv
criteria but something to watch.

Lastly, as prev forecaster alluded too, will have to watch for the
convection potential towards the pre-dawn hours on Sunday.
Steepening lapse rates from rainfall combined with strong shear and
Surface LI below 0 could result in some thunder. SB CAPE values are
still below 100 j/kg but cannot rule out a rumble of thunder.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...

Big Picture...

Longwave pattern maintains a broad trough over North America. This
trough flattens a little late next week as high pressure builds over
the Gulf of Mexico. Shortwave pattern shows a similar organization.
Great Lakes upper low associated with our weekend storm will lift
north through Quebec Monday night and Tuesday. Low pressure sitting
over the Canadian Arctic and building high pressure over the Gulf of
Mexico will flatten the USA flow nearly to zonal with individual
shortwave moving through. Low confidence in timing the shortwaves in
a developing zonal flow, but one looks to move through New England
late in the week.

Mass fields generally agree through Tuesday and show a similar
pattern but differences in details on the shortwaves Wednesday
through Friday. This means high confidence Tuesday trending to
moderate confidence late week.

Details...

Monday night through Wednesday...

Tuesday shows a lingering shortwave from the departing upper low.
Cross sections show a moist layer between 800 and 850 mb Tuesday,
otherwise dry air is in place. This may support some sky cover
especially across northern Mass. High pressure builds over the
region with with fair weather. Mixing to 850 mb and temps at that
level of 0C to -2C suggest max temps mid 50s to around 60. Temps
cool a couple of degrees Wednesday, supporting max sfc temps in the
50s. Mostly clear skies and light winds Monday and Tuesday nights
along with dew points in the 30s will allow min sfc temps in the 30s
to mid 40s, coolest Tuesday night as the high moves overhead.

Thursday-Friday...

Upper shortwave moves through during late week. This would support a
cold front during this time. Timing currently favors Thursday.
Models show convergence from a southerly jet of 30-40 knots and deep
moisture along/ahead of the front. Most of the forcing moves from
New York across VT/NH, but with some reaching Southern New England.
All of this suggests clouds and a few showers are possible.

to relax tonight. Current SCA should be allowed to drop by tonight.
Increasing southerly flow with gusts near 25-30 kts will build seas
by dawn Monday. Rain coverage will increase during the overnight
with likely visibility restrictions over the waters. Another set of
SCA will be needed.
