Colorado...

.Deep moisture and a strong jet stream will bring snow heavy at 
times and strong winds to the mountains of north central Colorado
late tonight through Monday evening. The strong winds are already
occurring on the mountain peaks and ridges, but it is late this 
evening when snowfall will develop and then become widespread 
after midnight. The heaviest snowfall will likely occur late 
tonight through Monday afternoon, with the greatest 
accumulations expected on west and northwest facing slopes. In 
addition to the heavy snowfall, strong winds will produce blowing
and drifting snow which will create hazardous driving conditions 
especially on the high passes and up around the Eisenhower Tunnel.
The snowfall and winds should gradually diminish Monday evening 
with the moisture and jet stream moving away from the area.

Strong upper level divergence seen in the GOES 16 satellite
imagery on the nose of the upper level jet. Atmosphere responded
quickly to the lift and upslope behind the front with some
release of potential instability and/or conditional symmetric
instability (CSI). Heavy convective snow bands were able to push
south behind the front as expected and we're nearing 3" of snow
already here in Boulder. A couple other reports of a quick 2" on
the plains. Snow is beginning to taper off from the north as the
colder and drier airmass works in, and main lift on the nose of
the jet max will also depart by 06Z. Could see another inch or two
of accumulation in the main snow bands as they shift south/east
of Denver over the next few hours, but little if any additional
accumulation expected along/north of Fort Collins-Greeley-
Sterling.

Mountain areas have seen high impacts with the heavier snow and
blowing snow. Sections of I-70 shut down for quite awhile already
this evening. Will continue our highlights there til 11 PM. After
that, snow should really decrease as subsidence and drier airmass
builds in.

Temperatures plunged a quick 15 degrees behind the front, and it's
already down to 2F at Cheyenne. Will lower temps a few more
degrees to account for this. Also, if we clear off the additional
snow cover will likely allow temps to plunge below zero over a
good chunk of the plains.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday)
Issued at 216 PM MST Sat Dec 23 2017

A moist northwest flow aloft continues to bring snow to the
mountains. Lift from the jet stream will enhance snow over the
mountains later this afternoon. This will also bring enough lift
to produce snow along the Front Range and across the eastern
plains this evening. Up to 3 inches of snow will be possible under
the snow bands. However, most locations will see around an inch.
In addition, a cold front will drop south across the area late
this afternoon/early evening. Appears the front will push across
the Denver area around 7pm. Shortly after, snow is expected to
begin. Roads should be snow covered and icy this evening as
temperatures plunge.

The subsident side of the jet moves over the area around
midnight. This will result in drying and end the snow. By 12z,
expect mostly clear skies to prevail. May even be fog Sunday
morning due to light winds and good radiational cooling.

For Sunday, the area is expected to be between systems. Dry
conditions will prevail under mostly sunny skies. Easterly winds
and fresh snow cover should help keep temperatures cool Sunday
with highs in the upper 20s to lower 30s across northeast
Colorado. High clouds will increase later in the day with the
approach of the next system.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Saturday)

NW flow aloft will continue over the area Sun night into Mon.
Moisture will gradually increase in the mtns Sun night and continue
into Mon with favorable orographic flow. Lapse rates will be around
6 c/km range during the time of best moisture. In addition
position of upper level jet may provide some enhanced lift. Thus
will likely need additional highlights for late Sun night into Mon
across the mtns with some decent snowfall in some areas. Across
nern CO a cold airmass will remain in place across the plains.
Both the ECMWF and GFS have this colder airmass up along the
foothills the entire day as well. Thus have lowered highs for
Christmas across nern CO as readings across the the far nern
plains will not get out of the teens. As far as pcpn there could
be some light snow closer to the WY-NE border on Mon, however,
the ECMWF has some light snow occurring further south to just
north of Denver.

By Mon night moisture will decrease in the mtns along with snowfall.
Over the plains there still could be a chc of light snow in the
early evening hours across the far nern plains. On Tue mainly dry NW
flow aloft will be over the area with only a slight chc of light
snow in the mtns.  Meanwhile the a cold airmass will remain across
nern CO with highs over the far nern corner holding in the teens
once again.

For Tue night thru Wed dry WNW flow will be across nrn CO with no
pcpn expected.  Meanwhile a sfc lee trough will begin to develop
along the front range with some downslope component.  Thus should
begin to see moderating temps over nern CO with highs ranging fm the
lower to mid 30s over the far nern plains with lower to mid 40s
around the Denver area.

On Thu a weak disturbance embedded in WNW flow aloft will move
across nrn CO.  There may be enough moisture with this feature for a
slight chc of snow in the mtns.  Across nern CO it will be dry with
both the ECMWF and GFS showing a sfc lee trough over the plains.  As
a result they have highs in the 40s over nern CO which is 5 to 10
degrees warmer than current blended solutions.

.AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Sunday evening)

Heaviest snow that temporarily reduced visibility to 1/4sm is
moving south. Still one more band of heavier snow to our north
which could affect the airports til 04Z-05Z before diminishing to
light snow/flurries and better visibility and higher ceilings.
Expect VFR conditions to return 07Z-10Z with clearing skies
thereafter. Gusty north winds to around 30 knots will decrease
through 06Z, and then become light/variable.

At this time, only a slight chance of fog developing later tonight
with light drainage winds expected to develop. VFR will prevail
through Sunday.

...WINDY WITH SNOW IN THE MOUNTAINS THROUGH THIS EVENING...

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Snow will continue over the mountains today, along with wind
gusts of 40 to 60 mph over the higher elevations. Storm total snow
accumulations of 8 to 14 inches are expected in areas north of
Berthoud Pass, with 5 to 10 inches over the central mountains.
Snowfall of 3 to 6 inches is expected over North and Middle Parks
and the northern Front Range foothills. Roads will be icy, with
low visibilities over the passes.

On the plains and along the Front Range, snow will develop near
the northern border late this afternoon and spread southward.
Most areas will see a quick inch of snow this evening. A few
locations under heavier snow bands may receive up 3 inches of
snow. Roads are expected to become icy this evening along the
Front Range and eastern plains with this quick shot snow.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Snow will redevelop in the mountains late Sunday afternoon and
continue through Monday night. Several inches of accumulation is
possible. The northern border area of the plains will see a chance
of snow on Monday into Monday evening. Tuesday through Wednesday
night look to be dry over all the forecast area. The next storm
moves in bringing a chance of snow to the mountains Thursday into
Friday, but nothing for the plains. Temperatures will generally
remain below seasonal normals through the period.
