.A powerful Pacific jet stream combined with moisture will produce
considerable snow and blowing snow in the northern Colorado
mountains late tonight through Saturday night. The heavier snow 
will start after midnight tonight, and gradually spread south 
toward the I-70 corridor through Saturday. Hazardous travel 
conditions can be expected for those traveling into or through the
Colorado high country. Some snow will also spread southward 
across the plains late Saturday afternoon and evening, resulting
in winter travel conditions.

.A powerful jet stream combined with moisture will produce
considerable snow and blowing snow in the northern Colorado
mountains through this evening. The heavier snow will start in
areas near the Wyoming border today, and spread south toward the 
I-70 mountain corridor this afternoon and evening. Strong winds
will produce areas of blowing and drifting snow, and cold
temperatures will help keep the roads icy. Hazardous winter
driving conditions can be expected over the mountain passes, and
at times in the higher foothills and valleys west of the
Continental Divide.

Light snow is also likely across much of Wyoming today, and this 
will spread into the northeast plains of Colorado and western
Nebraska late this afternoon and evening, likely making many 
roads icy.

Travelers should check the latest weather and road conditions
before heading out. Have your vehicle in good working condition

THE PLAINS...

.A powerful jet stream combined with moisture will produce
additional snow and blowing snow in the northern Colorado 
mountains. The heavier snow will spread south across the I-70 
mountain corridor through this evening. Strong winds will produce
areas of blowing and drifting snow, and cold temperatures will 
keep the roads icy and drop wind chill readings below zero. 

Bands of snow, a few heavy, will also spread south across the 
plains and I-25 Corridor this evening. Temperatures will drop into
the teens behind a cold front, allowing snow to accumulate on 
roads and create hazardous and icy travel conditions. Snow 
accumulations in lower elevations will mostly range between 1 and 
3 inches.

Travelers should check the latest weather and road conditions 
before heading out. Have your vehicle in good working condition 
with adequate snow tires or chains. Also take along a winter 
survival kit, including extra food, water, blankets, flashlights,
and a snow shovel.

Better travel conditions can be expected on Sunday, before the

...TONIGHT'S STORM SYSTEM IS WINDING DOWN...BUT ANOTHER MOUNTAIN
SNOW EVENT ARRIVES SUNDAY NIGHT AND CONTINUES THROUGH CHRISTMAS
DAY...

.Heavy snow is winding down as colder and drier air pushes across
northern Colorado. Several road closures have occurred in the high
country this evening, with hazardous winter travel conditions 
also across most of the northeast plains of Colorado and I-25 
Corridor from the Wyoming border through Denver and across the 
Palmer Divide.

Conditions will gradually improve overnight as snow comes to an
end, but slick road conditions will likely remain into Sunday
morning.  

Another round of significant snowfall and blowing snow is expected
to hit the northern and central mountains of Colorado Sunday 
night into Christmas Day. Most of the plains and Front Range I-25 
Corridor should stay dry. However, the northern border area into 
Wyoming and Nebraska will likely see more snowfall.

...WINTER STORM MOVING OUT OF COLORADO...

.Snow was decreasing rapidly across northern Colorado late
Saturday evening. Additional accumulations overnight in the
mountains will be an inch or less. As of 11 PM, there were still
some road closures from the earlier snowfall and accidents.
Travelers should check for the latest information at

morning. Another storm system will bring snow to the mountains
Sunday night into Monday.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

NW flow aloft will gradually increase this aftn thru tonight as
moisture increases in the nrn mtns overnight.  Thru the aftn hours
it will be dry across the area.  Highs across nern CO will be in the
30s although readings in srn Lincoln county may rise into the lower
40s.

For tonight snow will develop in the nrn mtns especially after
midnight with favorable orographic component in place.  Lapse rates
are rather marginal, however, axis of stronger upper level winds
will move into the area and possibly enhance snowfall rates.
Meanwhile component along winds will increase to around 60 kts so
strong winds and blowing snow will be possible mainly abv 10000
ft. At lower elevations, current cross-sections don't show a mtn
wave so stronger winds should stay higher up. However may see some
gusts from 50 to 60 mph in the higher foothills.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

Models keep a mean upper trough over much of North America
Saturday into the extended period. Our Forecast area stays under
a strong northwesterly jet maximum Saturday into Sunday evening.
Jet level wind speeds are in the 95 to 140 knot range through the
weekend. The QG Omega fields have fairly decent upward motion
over the CWA on Saturday, then there is downward motion Saturday
night into Sunday. There is upward energy for Sunday night. The
lower level pressure and wind fields show the cold front on
Saturday to come in late afternoon and evening now. Upslope is
progged much of Saturday night and Sunday. More normal drainage
patterns are likely Sunday night. Moisture is deep over the
western CWA on the GFS and ECMWF on Saturday. It dries out quite a
bit Saturday night. There is some low level moisture over the
plains late Saturday afternoon and evening. It is not very deep
over the western plains, but deeper towards the eastern border.
It dries out significantly after midnight. Moisture increases and
deepens again late on Sunday and Sunday night for the mountains.
Will need high pops for the mountains Saturday, then decreasing
Saturday evening/night. Will increase pops again to "likely"s late
Sunday and Sunday night. The QPF fields have some fairly decent
amounts of measurable snow over the mountains, especially north of
I-70. Orographics should be pretty good with both direction and
wind speeds. Will go with warnings in Zones 31 and 33, and an
advisory in zones 34 through 06Z Saturday night. For
temperatures, Saturday's highs are 1-4.5 C colder than today's
highs. Sunday's highs are similar to Saturday's. For the later
days, Monday through Thursday, models keep a jet maximum over the
CWA Monday with jet level wind speeds from the west at 110 to 140
knots. On Tuesday and Wednesday, there is weakening west-
southwesterly flow aloft for the CWA. On Thursday, the GFS has an
upper trough move across, the ECMWF does not. The best pops are
needed for the mountains Monday into the evening. It dries out
then late Monday night through mid day Wednesday. Will bring pops
back to the mountains Wednesday afternoon through Thursday.

Mosquito Range until 6pm this evening...

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Much colder temperatures and areas of snow will continue to
produce slick roads conditions across the area. The snow will
gradually diminish from north to south by the afternoon and
should end shortly after. Total snowfall accumulations of 4 to 10
inches are expected in the mountains, favoring the high
elevations of southern Summit County and northwestern Park County,
with 3 to 6 inches in the foothills. Across northeast Colorado
amounts of 1 to 2 inches will be possible with 2 to 4 inches
closer to the foothills. North winds of 15 to 20 mph with a few
gusts to 30 mph will produce some patchy blowing snow across the
plains as well as windchill readings in the single digits.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

Friday will be dry with slightly warmer temperatures. The next
system will bring snow to the mountains Friday night through
Saturday night with accumulations up to 8 inches possible. Snow
will start to move in behind a cold front on the plains by
Saturday morning with up to 4 inches possible at this point.
Continued moisture and favorable orographics will continue to
bring a chance of snow to the mountains through Wednesday. The
plains however look to stay dry Sunday through Wednesday.
Temperatures will be below seasonal normals Saturday, Sunday and
Wednesday, with near normal readings Monday and Tuesday.
