...MORE SNOW HEADED TO COLORADO...

.A Spring storm system will bring cold temperatures and snow to
much of the area tonight through Saturday. Significant snow
accumulations are expected across the Front Range Foothills and
and Palmer Divide. Accumulating snow can be expected across most
of the plains as well, with a few inches expected from the Denver
Metro area southeast along the I-70 corridor through Limon.  The
wintry conditions may impact travel. Wet snow accumulating on
trees that have already leafed out may also result in broken tree
limbs and scattered power outages. Stay tuned to the National
Weather Service or your local news media for the latest updates
on this winter-like storm.

The National Weather Service in Denver has issued a Winter Storm
Warning, which is in effect from 6 PM this evening to 6 PM MDT 
Saturday. The Winter Weather Advisory is no longer in effect.

* TIMING...Rain and snow showers late this afternoon will change
  to all snow during the early evening. Periods of heavy snow are
  likely during the night. Lighter snow will continue on Saturday
  but road conditions should be improving.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...6 to 12 inches. The heaviest amounts will
  likely be in the southern part of the Denver metro area. 

* WIND/VISIBILITY...North winds 15 to 25 mph east of Interstate
  25. Visibility may be reduced to a half mile or less in the
  heavier snow showers tonight.

* IMPACTS...Wet snow may accumulate on already leafed out trees,
  resulting in broken tree limbs and scattered power outages. Some
  roads will become snow and slush covered tonight during the
  heavier snow showers. Road conditions should improve during the
  day Saturday.

...AREAS OF HEAVY SNOW TONIGHT...

.A Spring storm system will bring snow to eastern Colorado 
tonight into Saturday. Periods of heavy snow are expected from  
the Front Range foothills across the Denver metro area and Palmer
Divide and into southeastern Colorado and western Kansas. Further
north the snow will be lighter, but several inches of wet snow 
are expected. Roads will become snow covered during the periods of
heavier snow. Wet snow accumulating on trees that have already 
leafed out may also result in broken tree limbs and scattered 
power outages. 

The snow will end from northwest to southeast on Saturday. There 
is some uncertainty on the speed the storm will exit, so heavier 
snow is possible on the eastern plains if the storm moves more 
slowly.

...SNOW CONTINUING IN THE SOUTHERN FOOTHILLS AND OVER THE PALMER
DIVIDE...

.The Spring storm system that brought snow to northeast Colorado
overnight will remain centered over northern New Mexico today,
bringing heavy snow to parts of southeastern Colorado. Only light
snow is expected over northeastern Colorado as the strongest part
of the storm system remains to the south. However, light to
moderate snow is still expected over the Palmer Divide and
the Front Range foothills of Jefferson and Douglas Counties. A few
inches of additional snow are expected over these areas. Roads may
be slushy or snow-covered, especially early this morning. Travel
conditions should improve through the day. Tender vegetation may
also be stressed by the weight of accumulated snow and the cold
temperatures.

DIVIDE...

.A wet spring storm system will continue to move very slowly east
from the southern Rockies into the central plains today. Light
snow in Denver and across northeastern Colorado will end this
afternoon, but accumulating snow will continue from the foothills
of Jefferson and Douglas Counties across the Palmer Divide region
south of Denver and the Limon area. another 1 to 3 inches of snow
will fall in these areas before the snow ends from west to east
overnight. Roads are wet across most of the area, but could still
be slushy in the heavier snow areas, especially on bridges.
Isolated power outages are also occurring due to sagging or 
broken tree limbs.

Travelers should note that the heaviest snow will be moving 
slowly from southeast Colorado into western Kansas tonight into
Sunday. Check the latest road conditions if you are headed that
direction.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

...Spring storm system to affect the area with accumulating
snow...

Complex weather pattern in place to say the least. Latest
satellite loop shows an elongated trough to our north producing
widespread precip, with one short wave rotating in southwest
Nebraska and another in south central Wyoming. Obviously this lead
short wave has disrupted the entire storm system, and this has
been previously discussed in days past so no surprise here.

Another piece of energy will drive down the back side of the
elongated upper trough today, as seen in the Q-G fields. This
will reinvigorate an upper level low developing near the Four
Corners late this afternoon. At the same time, the pressure
pattern over northeast Colorado collapses, ushering in much colder
air on gusty northeast winds. This will set the stage for
convective showers and perhaps a couple thunderstorms given a
couple hundred J/Kg of CAPE under the cold pool aloft. The
convective showers are likely to organize in and near the Front
Range Foothills by late afternoon and evening. In the foothills,
this will translate to heavy snow with snowfall rates of 1-2
inches per hour likely under the heavier showers. On the plains,
some snow already mixing in near the northeast corner (per
Ogallala, NE observation), so the cold air is there. That should
allow some snow to mix in across all of the plains with the
showers by late afternoon and temperatures aloft/wet bulb zeroes
showing mostly snow across the plains by 6-9 PM. Given the
expected convective nature early on, this is when our heaviest
snow should occur. After the late afternoon/evening precipitation,
snow may very likely decrease in intensity and coverage as the
atmosphere quickly stabilizes. This is seen nicely in the model
lapse rates and forecast soundings with a sharp inversion near
8000-9000 ft MSL. That should also translate to more of the
precipitation focusing in the foothills where forcing is driven by
upslope. Given the above mentioned factors, increased snow
accumulations during the late afternoon/early evening hours and
then decreased the forecast later tonight. Also refined a bit
sharper gradient focusing toward the higher terrain.

We are upgrading the Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning
for the Foothills & Palmer Divide through Saturday with amounts of
8-15 inches expected. Also started it a bit earlier at 4 PM for
the convection this afternoon. Surrounding that, we'll have a
Winter Weather Advisory for the Denver metro around out through
Deer Trail and Limon with 3-7 inch amounts expected at this time,
but confidence is only medium at best. Could see impacts to trees
with broken tree limbs should sufficient snow accumulate. Front
Range mountains to Park county will also have advisories as the
eastern side of the Front Range mountains should fair quite well
with regard to upslope snow.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

Snow will be falling across most of the forecast area Saturday
morning as the upper low is forecast to be tracking across
northern New Mexico. Eastern and northeastern Colorado will be
left under the diffluent region on the north side of the upper
low. There will be plenty of dynamic forcing moving across the
state, producing a widespread shield of precipitation over the
state. The strongest dynamics and lift will be closer to the upper
low, over southeast Colorado, but the lift over northeast Colorado
will combine with low level northerly flow to produce light to
moderate snowfall over northeast Colorado as well. Each of the
mid-range forecast models show decent amounts of QPF over the
forecast area as this Spring storm system moves over the region.
By Saturday afternoon and evening precipitation will be winding
down as the upper low moves out over northern Texas and drier air
begins moving into Colorado from Wyoming. Back to Saturday
morning, the Palmer Divide and southern foothills may still be
receiving snow at rates up to one inch per hour. But as the day
progresses, snow will begin tapering off and accumulated snow on
the ground will begin melting. By Saturday night and Sunday, only
the eastern fringes of the forecast area might be receiving any
snow, as the upper low progresses northeastward to southern
Kansas.

The first half of next week will see a continuation of cool
temperatures and a chance of showers each day as the flow aloft
remains out of the northwest. Temperatures aloft will only
gradually warm up as cool air moves down from the northern Rocky
Mountains. The moist northwesterly flow pattern will be unsettled
with embedded short waves generating rounds of afternoon and
evening showers over the mountains and out onto the plains.

A stronger trough is forecast to move over Colorado Tuesday night
as the flat ridge over the southwest U.S. begins to amplify. This
will lead to warming and drying for the latter half of the week.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Saturday morning)

Light and variable winds and low level moisture allowing patchy
fog to develop north of KDEN, but should stay toward Fort Collins,
Greeley, and Fort Morgan with no significant northerly wind push
expected at KDEN.

We expect frontal passage sometime around 18Z with gusty
northeast winds to around 22-30 knots through most of the
afternoon. Rain showers will become more numerous with ceilings
lowering to MVFR 21Z-00Z, and some snow may begin to mix in.
Should be mostly snow by 00Z-01Z with visibility down to 1/2SM in
heavier showers through 03Z. Otherwise visibility should mainly
range in the 2-3SM area after 03Z in light snow, and maybe even a
few breaks farther away from the foothills at KDEN. Total snow
accumulation at KDEN expected to range between 3 and 5 inches
through Saturday morning, but only moderate confidence at best.
Heavier showers this evening have potential to produce snowfall
rates up to 1 inch per hour. Winds decrease to around 10-15 knots
by 06Z.

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

A few brief moderate to heavy snow showers will occur across the
northern and central mountains this afternoon. Otherwise, light
snow will occur across the higher mountains today into tonight. This
includes I-70 through Summit county, and Highway 40 over Berthoud
Pass and Rabbit Ears Pass. On the plains, rain showers will
become more numerous this afternoon and evening. Across far
eastern Colorado a few thunderstorms may also develop with gusty
winds up to 35 mph, lightning, and small hail possible.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

A storm system will drop toward the Four Corners region Friday
night as a strong cold front moves across northeast Colorado.
Snow will develop over the foothills by late afternoon. In the
Denver area snow will develop in the evening, with the eastern
plains receiving a mix of rain and snow changing to mostly snow
overnight. Significant snowfall will be possible in the foothills
and over the Palmer Divide south of Denver where a Winter Storm
Watch is in effect. Snow accumulations up to a foot will be
possible in the foothills. Snow accumulations in the Denver area
will be lighter, but snow accumulating on leafed out vegetation
may lead to some breaking tree branches.

The snow storm should be moving out of the state by Saturday
afternoon and evening, but cool and unsettled weather may last
through Tuesday with a chance of afternoon and evening showers
each day. Warmer and drier weather are expected to return
Wednesday.
