Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Birmingham AL 312 AM CDT Thu Apr 6 2017 .SHORT TERM... Today and tonight. The cold front has exited stage right and now we can breathe a little easier. Still some weather to discuss so let's get to it. Currently we have an upper low that is position across the Great Lakes area. This continues to provide precipitation from the Great Lakes to the Tennessee Valley. This low is helping create gradient winds behind the cold front right now. As we swing through the day we will see a vorticity max swing along the southern edge of this upper low and will help contribute to the windy conditions as well as possibly produce a few isolated showers across the northern counties through the afternoon. A Wind Advisory will remain in effect through 7 pm for winds of 25 to 40 mph due to this system. Winds calm down some by sunset but will remain at 5 to 10 mph through the evening until the upper low can move a little bit further away. Due the winds staying up we will not drop to much below 40 degrees across most of the area, but if the winds die off a touch earlier then we could see a few upper 30s in the northeast by sunrise Friday morning. 16 .LONG TERM... Friday through Wednesday. A much quieter pattern will be in place during the extended forecast period with dry conditions until Tuesday. On Friday the forecast area will be under dry northwest flow aloft between a deep East Coast trough and ridging over the Plains. Breezy northwest winds will continue due to the gradient between a surface high over the Central US and the 988 mb surface low lifting through the Northeast, but they will not be as breezy as today. This and a reinforcing shot of cooler air aloft (around 0C at 850mb) will keep highs in the 60s. The surface ridge axis will move over Central Alabama Friday night allowing for ideal radiational cooling conditions. This will send low temperatures into the 30s for much of the forecast area. The typically cooler locations in the north and especially the northeast will see lows in the 34-36 range. Patchy frost will be possible there due to light winds depending on dew points, but may not be widespread enough for an advisory. The East Coast trough will be lifting out by Saturday with upper- level ridging building in behind it, and temperatures will begin to moderate on Saturday. Winds will switch around to light southerly Saturday night resulting in milder overnight lows. This southerly flow ahead of a shortwave trough and associated surface low moving through the Midwest will result in warm temperatures for Sunday and Monday, with the axis of deeper moisture remaining west of the area through Monday. A trailing cold front from the Midwest system will move in from the northwest on Tuesday. There will be just enough moisture right along the front for some showers and thunderstorms. The best chances will be in the northwest, quickly diminishing off to the south and east. While some instability will be present, 0-6 km bulk shear values will only be around 25 kts and upper-level forcing will be weak, so there are no severe weather concerns at this time. The front may briefly stall somewhere near the area Wednesday, serving as a focus for scattered rain chances, before drier air moves in for Thursday as upper-level ridging builds in. 32/Davis && .AVIATION... 06Z TAF Discussion. Main front has now exited the area and the main upper low is now beginning to swing through. Winds will remain very strong until the low finally lifts away from the area. So will go with predominate winds from the west/northwest at 20 kts and gust up to 30 to 35kt through the afternoon. Winds finally begin to calm some after 00Z. Otherwise VFR conditions for the cycle. 16 && .FIRE WEATHER... Rain-free weather returns and will last through Monday. The next rain chances will be on Tuesday into Wednesday as a weak front works into the area. RH values will fall below 30 percent over the weekend but fuel conditions right now are moist.
