.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure moves east of the area today with a quiet weather
day in store. A strong system will then impact the region late
tonight into Monday, with a wintry mix changing to snow.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
The snow has moved out and overall, expecting a quiet day today as
the area will be between systems. Continuing warm advection
pattern will result in highs moderating to the mid 30s to low 40s
range however abundant moisture persisting in the low level will
result in overcast skies persisting.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Main attention turns to significant but complex storm system
expected to impact the area Sunday into Monday...

The aforementioned storm will be driven by a strong upper
disturbance diving SE out of Canada that will phase with southern
stream energy. The result will be double barreled type surface
system that will spread precipitation into the region beginning
overnight Saturday night from SW to NE. Similar to the late
January system several weeks back, this will be a very tricky
forecast as far as precipitation types due to marginal temps at
the surface and aloft. Also, while forecast models are in good
agreement on the overall big picture with this system there are
differences in the temp profiles with the GFS and the SREF being
warmer while the NAM and especially the GEM reg is colder. As
precipitation moves into NE PA into the southern tier overnight,
it may begin as all rain, especially in NE PA, before likely
mixing with sleet and freezing rain as temperatures cool to the
low 30s. Sunday, this wintry mix will overspread remainder of the
CWA through the morning hours as low pressure tracks toward the
Delmarva. Again, temps very marginal with differences in models so
confidence still not high on exact P-types but the best
indications are for a good portion of the area to see a messy mix
of rain, ice and snow much of the day Sunday with the best chances
for significant freezing rain occurring being over NE PA from
Luzerne County N/E through Lackawanna County into the Poconos
then into Sullivan County due to sfc ridging nosing in from NE
here. Across the Finger Lakes and even into the southern tier,
warmer air has a better chance of making it in at the surface
meaning a better chance for periods of just plain rain mixed at
times with sleet and snow by late morning into the afternoon as
temps moderate above freezing. Eastern and NE areas from Delaware
County north to Oneida County have the best chance of being mainly
snow...though some sleet and freezing rain may mix in at times
here too.

Sunday evening...as potent upper disturbance reaches the coast,
expect rapid cyclogenesis off the New Jersey coast and this will
bring in cooler air at all level changing precip to all snow.
Since the low will be pulling away at this time, the heaviest and
steadies snow will taper off by the overnight over NE PA into the
southern tier but continue for areas farther north and east
through the Catskills north to Oneida County and also into
Onondaga, Madison Counties due to enhancement from the Lake.
These area are now in a winter storm watch with the potential for
at least 6-10 inches of snow while remaining areas are under a
winter weather advisory mainly for the freezing rain Sunday. The
other big story will be winds which will become strong out of the
NW overnight Sunday night into Monday due to the gradient on the
backside of the deepening storm. Gusts over 40 mph will be
possible. This will lead to potentially significant impacts...both
travel wise as far as blowing / drifting snow and even the chance
of power outages for areas in NE PA into Sullivan County if they
receive significant ice.

For Monday, very strong winds with periods of snow
continue around broad and deep low...heaviest and steadiest over
northern Counties along the I-90 corridor due to enhancement from
the Lake from the N/NW flow. Snow will be lighter and more
intermittent for remaining areas with little in the way of
additional accumulation for these areas by afternoon. The strong
winds will continue to create blowing and drifting however.

In terms of storm total, as mentioned, watch area could see at
least 6-10 inches of snow. Elsewhere, snow amounts will generally
be 2-5 inches from Sunday through Monday with the biggest concern
being the potential for significant ice accretion for NE PA into
Sullivan County where a tenth of an inch or more is possible.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...

Complex weather pattern continues in the long range. Brief
ridgging early Tuesday will give way to two approiaching waves.
One is a northern stream wave dropping into the Great lakes while
a souther stream wave develops over the Gulf coast. the GFS and
EURO continue to handle the systems differently with the Euro
developing a stronger southern system and keeping it dominant
while the GFS deepens the northern wave and makes it the dominant
system. This makes a big difference in our sensible weather as the
Euro would have another significant East Coast snowstorm
developing by late Wednesday, and the GFS just an open wave to the
south and a clipper zipping by to the north. 00Z Euro did have a
more easterly track with the coastal storm making for a minimal
impact on the forecast area but in any case the forecast for the
Tuesday - Wednesday period is subjuct to change.

Either way, beyond that, both models have a strong NW flow of cold
air and would have lake effect snow shwoers continuing through the
end of the long range period, with near normal temperatures.

.AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...

VFR conditions this afternoon will continue into the overnight as
high pressure noses down for northern New England. Complex system
developing over the Ohio valley will push precipitation into the
area after 06Z and spreading northeast for the rest of the period.
Thermal profiles are complex and suggest mixed precipiation at the
start, including sleet and freezing rain, perhaps changing to
heavy snow late in the period. With this will come quickly
dropping conditions and IFR and LIFR ceilings and visibilities
after 12Z.

OUTLOOK...

Sunday night...Restrictions in Snow. Winds also becoming gusty.

Monday through Monday night...Restrictions in snow showers with
gusty northwest winds, especially NY terminals.

Tuesday...VFR.

Tuesday Night through Thursday...Restrictions in snow showers.
