.SYNOPSIS...
Arctic air will continue to pour into New York and northern
Pennsylvania through Wednesday with lake effect snow showers
and flurries. The lake effect snow belts of northern and western
New York will see heavy snow accumulations with most other areas
seeing a couple inches at best. The cold air will continue into
the end of the week with additional snow showers and flurries.
Very cold wind chills are expected tonight, and especially
Wednesday night across the area. Temperatures will average at
least 15 degrees below normal for mid to late week.

Temperatures have already fallen into the single digits across
much of the forecast area, but readings are holding up under
lake clouds east of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.
A lake band will make a run at Northern Oneida County between 2z
and 5z, then drop into the Syracuse area between 11z and 15z.
The latest NAMNest, which has handled the bands well during the
current event, is pulling back on the strength of the snow
showers over Oneida County. Some minor strengthening is expected
early Wednesday morning as the band tracks into Onondaga
County.
Overnight minimums will range from -5 to +5.
330 PM update...
Lake Ontario and Lake Erie snow bands continue flowing off to
the east-northeast into northern and western NY. The Lake
Ontario snow band was continuing to stay to the north of Oneida
County at this time. The Lake Erie snow band was impacting
western Steuben County as per METARs since the radars were
apparently overshooting the cloud tops in this area. First
concern of the night is the projected southward shift of both
lake effect snow bands off Lakes Erie and Ontario as per CAM and
synoptic models. Middle and High level GOES-16 water vapor
channels shows a well-defined upper level wave moving east from
the upper Midwest. This wave will reach the northeast late
tonight and shear out some south of the closed low well
northeast of our area. This will lead to upper confluence and
build a surface high southward shifting the winds between the
surface and the inversion layer to more northwesterly tonight.
Hence both lake effect snow bands will shift south affecting
northern Oneida County enough to add additional significant
snows and then lead to advisory level snows in Onondaga, Madison
and southern Oneida Counties late tonight into Wednesday. The
lake effect will shift south of both Steuben county this evening
and south of northern Oneida County late tonight. Hence
warnings and advisories will expire in these areas tonight.
Next concern is the very cold air and low wind chills. Tonight
will see wind chills between 5 below and 15 below zero in our
northern and eastern areas so we continue wind chill advisories
tonight into Wednesday night where even colder wind chills will
occur. Added rest of CWA to wind chill advisory for Wednesday
night. It is looking like wind chill warnings will be needed
Wednesday night from Oneida County south to Madison and Otsego
counties at least with wind chills dropping to as low as 30
below zero! For now, we will continue advisories in these
locations as per collaboration with neighboring WFOs. Will hit
this hard in our IDSS briefings.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
For Thursday and Thursday night, the cold continues on northwest
winds. We will continue lake effect snow showers and flurries
downwind of Lake Ontario which will dry up late Thursday night
before next system arrives Friday.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...

Still model differences on the timing and strength of the next
system moving through Friday to Saturday. Friday low pressure slowly
drops southeast on the north of the upper level trough. At the same
time low pressure forms off the southeast coast and moves northeast.
The low will drop through the area Saturday. This will bring a
widespread light snowfall Friday night and Saturday. Behind that
will be lake effect for the rest of the period as another shot of
Arctic air drops southeast. Models differ on which way the low level
flow is so mostly chance pops in central NY and less in NEPA.
Temperatures start out below normal and much below Saturday night
on. Highs 10 to 25 Friday and Saturday drop to 5 to 15.

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A band of lake effect snow will skirt the KRME terminal
overnight, until about 10-12z, bringing MVFR and occasional IFR
restrictions in light snow. The same band will reach KSYR
around or just after sunrise. Visibilities at KSYR will
fluctuate between 2SM and 5SM as the band settles overhead
through much of the day. Visibilities could occasionally fall to
around 1SM during the late morning, depending on the strength
of the snow band as it moves through.
Snow showers will slowly shift south later Wednesday afternoon
and evening. The lake effect snow showers may reach KITH, KBGM
and perhaps KELM, mainly after 27/21Z or 28/00z...expect
occasional MVFR visibilities and ceilings in light snow showers.
VFR conditions are forecast throughout the period at KAVP.
West-northwest winds will be mainly 7-15 kts through the period.
Outlook...
Wednesday night to Thursday...Flurries and light snow showers
around, could cause some occasional MVFR restrictions for the NY
terminals, especially KITH, KSYR and KBGM.
Friday and Saturday...Flight category reductions possible due
to periods of light snow.
Sunday...Restrictions possible in NY due to lake effect snow
showers.
