.SYNOPSIS...
As low pressure moves through nearby southern Ontario today
showers will continue across the region with possibly a rumble
of thunder this afternoon. After a quiet day Wednesday, another
fairly strong storm will arrive Thursday, with more rain
anticipated.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
345 am update...
Mid level warm front is lifting north across the region early
this morning with widespread light to moderate rain now confined
to the northern and extreme eastern part of the forecast area.
Since this feature is really progressive total rainfall so far
generally ranges from 2 to 4 tenths with the region from
Syracuse to the western Mohawk Valley from half to three
quarters of an inch. So far local streams and rivers show
little response. Before daybreak the steady activity is expected
to lift north of the entire area.
By daybreak activity will become convective as mid level waves
in southwest flow cross the region later this morning through
the afternoon. Initially activity during the mid morning will be
more scattered but as a mid level wave passes later this
morning through afternoon activity will become widespread
again. Models continue to show some instability developing this
afternoon beginning in the Finger Lakes region and Wyoming
Valley then progress eastward during the afternoon. Model
soundings indicate tall/skinny CAPE with Showalter Index around
-1, so will include chance for thunderstorm across the entire
region primarily from 17Z-22Z.
Overnight a flat upper level ridge will build over the region
but light rain showers may continue into the overnight period in
the western Mohawk Valley and Tug Hill Plateau as low pressure
slowly moves along the Saint Lawrence Valley.
Wednesday the area will be between systems with surface high
pressure in the vicinity during the morning then this will
shift to New England by afternoon. Upper level ridge will crest
over the region during the early afternoon. High temperatures
will range in the middle to upper 50s under partly to mostly
sunny skies.
Will continue with flood watch as next system could be more
problematic than this first one.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
430 AM Update...
Main concern is renewed, and probably greater, risk of flooding
as second system impacts the region.
A deep upper level trough will track from the mid west
northeast into the Ohio Valley while becoming cutoff then wobble
into the local area on Friday before departing into New England
on Saturday. In the big picture the models are similar, but
there are important differences regarding timing for how long it
takes low to get cut off. This means that locations of
potentially heavy rainfall is still hard to pinpoint. NAM and
GEM models hang up a ribbon of anomalously high precipitable
water - 5 standard deviations above normal in the NAM for 850mb
moisture flux - courtesy of moisture contributions from the
Atlantic at lower levels and all the way from the Gulf in mid
levels. GFS and ECMWF are moist yet move individual elements of
the system faster than the NAM and GEM.
Rain is expected to move in late Wednesday night and continue
through Thursday before becoming more showery Thursday night and
Friday. The most persistent rains will likely fall on Thursday
as a mid level warm front lifts through the area and before
system becomes vertically stacked. Somewhere within the general
region, heavy rainfall due to copious moisture could lead to
localized flash flooding on Thursday. There is also at least a
small chance for thunder; any convection would be cause for
concern because with our saturated soils, water from a downpour
would quickly run off into small streams/creeks. As for the
main stem rivers, they will already be at elevated levels from
prior rains with little recovery time between systems. Responses
to the additional rain Thursday-Friday will pose further
flooding potential. See Hydrology section near the bottom of
this Area Forecast Discussion for more details.
Cooler air will spill in on backside of upper low Friday, which
may be opening back up to a trough around then. Showers and
clouds will continue but rain amounts will be significantly
lighter by then.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Friday night into Saturday activity will become more scattered.
Cold air advection behind this feature drops T85 to -3/-5C
Friday night with snow showers mixing with rain showers during
the overnight period. Friday night lows will be in the 30s.
Highs Saturday will struggle to reach the lower to middle 40s.
Saturday night and Sunday will be dry as an upper level ridge
briefly builds into the area. Highs on Sunday will be in the
50s.

.AVIATION /12Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Convection is now widely scattered across the region but will
become more widespread later this morning and afternoon when a
mid level wave passes through and diurnal instability increases.
Widespread MVFR/alternate required conditions will continue
through late afternoon. At KBGM alternate minimum conditions
will persist until mid morning with improvement to alternate
required. A heavier line of showers with isolated thunderstorms
possible will track across the region between 16Z-22Z. By late
day conditions will improve to VFR across the southern
terminals and remain MVFR at KRME/KSYR. Later this evening
ceilings will lower back into MVFR at KBGM/KITH.
Surface winds southeast at 10 knots with gusts on the hilltops

.HYDROLOGY...
4 AM update... A long-duration Flood Watch was hoisted for NEPA
and most of CNY, to cover both rain producing systems this week.
Regarding the first system, including what began late Monday, a
general 0.5-1.25" is anticipated through this coming evening.
It should come in two shots, the first ongoing early this
morning, then the second area of showers and isolated thunder
for the afternoon and early evening. The highest rainfall
amounts are anticipated over the Catskills and Poconos, as well
as in Oneida county, owing to southerly upslope flow. A number
of main stem river points in the Delaware and Susquehanna
watersheds are currently forecast to approach, or make it into
minor flood category by Wednesday.
Water levels are also running quite high in the Finger Lakes
region at this time, with additional snow melt also a factor in
the Mohawk and upper stretches of the Susquehanna and Delaware
basins.
A second, perhaps stronger storm will bring another shot of
rain, possibly heavy, on Thursday. The rain could last into
Friday, depending on the overall evolution/progressiveness of
the system.
Given current high flows and very little recovery time between
these two rain events, a multi-day flood threat is expected,
which explains the long duration of the Flood Watch.
