* HAZARD TYPES...Heavy snow, as well as significant blowing and 
  drifting.

* ACCUMULATIONS...Snow accumulations of 14 to 20 inches in valley
  locations and up around 2 feet at higher elevations.

* TIMING...Snow will become heavy at times shortly after midnight
  with heavy snow continuing through much of the day on Tuesday. The
  snow will taper off to lighter snow and snow showers Tuesday 
  night. Winds will increase from the north or northeast later 
  tonight with occasional gusts to 35 mph late tonight and 
  especially Tuesday. Most of the snow will be over by Tuesday 
  night but blowing and drifting snow will cause travel problems 
  through Wednesday.

* IMPACTS...The heavy snow will combine with strong winds to cause
  low visibility along with considerable blowing and drifting
  snow. White out conditions will be common, especially over the
  Pocono plateau. Travel will become nearly impossible in many
  areas. Bitter wind chills may produce frostbite with prolonged
  exposure to the cold.

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure centered over the area this morning will move off
the east coast by this afternoon. Clouds will increase this
morning but area will remain dry through late afternoon. A
major winter storm will impact our region tonight through
Wednesday. Heavy snow will occur late tonight through Tuesday
followed by lighter snowfall but considerable blowing and
drifting snow Tuesday night through Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Updated at 11 am... High clouds are spreading east across the
area this morning in advance of the our major storm with the
northern portion advancing east from the midwest. Latest water
vapor imagery showing one wave diving southeast across the upper
midwest while a strong wave moves east toward the Tennessee
Valley and southeast U.S. Moisture is streaming north ahead of
this system across the southeast U.S. Quick look at latest 12z
NAM forecast shows little change to our current forecast
thinking, ie the southern wave will pivot northeast around the
east side of the wave dropping southeast across the upper
midwest inducing rapid cyclogenesis near Cape Hatteras tonight.
Surface and mid- level low pressure tracks along the east coast favor
extremely heavy snow for much of eastern Pa, eastern NY and New
England. Snow amounts in central NY west of I-81 will not be
quite as extreme as farther east but still near to over a foot
in many locations through Tuesday with more to come in lake
enhanced northwest flow Tuesday night into Wednesday. Have
raised snow amounts over higher elevations in northeast Pa due
to expected topographical affects with this windy system.
Otherwise no changes with this update with warnings remainng in
effect. Previous discussion is below.

Another very cold morning as surface high pressure brought
mainly clear skies to much of the region overnight with early
morning lows generally in the single digits with spots in
northern Oneida county around 5 below.

As high pressure moves east and off the coast later this
morning and a mid level wave moves into the Ohio valley mid
level clouds will increase with skies becoming mostly cloudy by
midday. Area will remain dry through late afternoon with high
temperatures ranging from the middle to upper 20s in central New
York to near 30 in northeast Pennsylvania.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Winter storm warning continues in effect for the entire area 8PM
tonight through Wednesday.

Models are coming into better agreement with upcoming major
winter storm leading to greater confidence that the most significant
and widespread snowfall of the winter season is about to occur.

A vigorous short wave in Iowa this morning will move off the
southeast coast this evening and create rapid cyclogenesis
along the North Carolina coast this evening. Surface low
pressure will then track northeast along the coast and deepen
rapidly to around 985 mb by mid morning Tuesday. On Tuesday the
system will move from just off the southern New Jersey coast to
Cape Cod by evening. Moderate to heavy snow will spread across
the area late this evening and through the overnight hours. The
greatest snowfall rates (1 to 2 inches per hour) will occur
early Tuesday morning through afternoon as lift, deep moisture
and favorable snow growth all occur at the same time. Best
frontogenetic forcing associated with 700mb closed low will
occur over northeast Pennsylvania and the western Catskills
between 09Z-18Z. Strong winds during the afternoon will produce
considerable blowing and drifting along with poor visibilities.

Tuesday night and Wednesday as the system lifts into northern
New England wrap around moisture will keep periods of snow over
the region. This activity will be much lighter but strong
northwest winds will cause more blowing and drifting snow. Later
Tuesday night into Wednesday favorable flow will develop for
lake enhancement across the Finger Lakes region.

Total snow accumulations of 10 to 18 inches is likely for the
entire area with localized amounts of greater than 20 inches
in northeast Pennsylvania and western Catskills.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
215 am update...

Cold advection regime will remain in place Wednesday night to
Thursday night with favorable conditions for additional light
accumulating lake effect snow showers across the eastern Finger
Lakes over to Syracuse and into the western Catskills.

A ridge of surface high pressure moves through on Friday with a
break in the snow and temperatures warming into the 30s. Then it
gets interesting again. A surface low and upper level trough
drops southeast through the Great Lakes Saturday, then bombs on
the east coast Sunday. For now looks like a light snow Friday
night and Saturday followed by weak wrap around snow showers
Sunday. The low gets going too far off the coast to give us any
heavy snow.

Temperatures much below normal to start, with lows in the teens
and highs in the 20s Wednesday and Thursday. Warming then so the
weekend will be only slightly below average with highs around
40 and lows in the 20s.

.AVIATION /15Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
VFR conditions are expected into early evening with increasing
mid level clouds this morning then ceiling lowering to around 4K
FT by 00Z. Between 06Z-09Z IFR/Alternate required conditions
will develop quickly across the terminals as snow spreads
through the area from southwest to northeast.

Light and variable winds through today becoming E/SE around 5-8
knots after 00Z.

OUTLOOK...

Tuesday...Restrictions from IFR to near minimums due to
snow occasionally heavy snow.

Tuesday night-Wednesday...Restrictions likely in snow showers
and gusty winds.

Wednesday night-Thursday...Improving conditions but lake effect
snow showers and brief restrictions still possible NY terminals.

Thursday night-Friday...Mainly VFR.
