Current indications are 5 to 7 inches of snow will fall across much of southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa. The heavier snow looks to fall late Sunday afternoon into Monday morning, with impacts to the Monday morning commuted expected. Thus a winter storm watch has been issued for these areas from late Sunday afternoon through Monday. As confidence increases, the winter storm watch may need to be expanded into parts of western and southwest Wisconsin. While confidence is high that this storm will produce significant amounts of snow, where that ultimately falls, and how much falls remains somewhat uncertain. A small shift in the storm track or its strength will have impacts on where the heaviest snow falls, and how much. Keep up on the latest forecasts and prepare now for this winter storm...especially if you have travel plans later Sunday into Monday. National Weather Service La Crosse WI
230 PM CST Fri Mar 10 2017
.SHORT TERM...(Tonight thru Saturday night)
Issued at 230 PM CST Fri Mar 10 2017
Main fcst concerns this period is the cold, dry airmass/Canadian
high settled over the region and below normal temperatures.
18z data analysis had a 1046mb high centered over southern Man to
northern Saskat, with ridging to the SE into MN/IA/WI. Generally
sunny skies east of the ridge axis while mid clouds were spreading
over the SW half of the region as moisture was streaming over the
northern Rockies and thru the broad W-NW flow south of the jet axis.
Sunshine or no sunshine, mid-day temps some 10F to 20F below normal
as broad low level cold advection continued. 18z temps ranging from
around zero in far northern MN to near 30 in far southern IA.
Model runs of 10.12z initialized well. Models in good agreement on
dry, quiet NW flow aloft over most of MN/IA/WI this short-term
period. Fcst confidence for both seasonably cold and dry tonight
thru Sat night is good this cycle.
For the short term, sfc ridge axis of the cold, dry Can high
continues to build into the Upper Midwest tonight, then sits over
the region Sat/Sat night. Winds tonight thru Sat night mostly less
than 10 mph, for less of a wind chill concern late tonight/Sat
morning and less fire weather concern with the dry airmass Sat.
coldest of the low level airmass is over the region tonight, with
925mb temps across the fcst area in the -12c to -18c range at 12z
Sat, moderating slightly to -10c to -16c for Sat night. With the
lighter winds under/near the ridge axis, potential for some quite
chilly lows both tonight/Sat night, but extent of cloud cover from a
system passing SW of the fcst area tonight, then mid/high level
moisture/clouds ahead of the next stronger wave coming thru the flow
already increasing from the NW Sat night. Coldest lows (approaching
0F) looking to be along/NE of I-94 with the greatest potential for
skies to remain clear to partly cloudy. Colder lows Sat night may
well be over the SE side of the fcst area where skies would stay
clear to partly cloudy the longest.
Given the expected cloud cover, used a blend of the guidance lows NE
and favored warmer of lows SW tonight. Favored the blend SE and
warmer of guidance lows NW Sat night. Used a blend of the guidance
highs Sat.
.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)
Issued at 230 PM CST Fri Mar 10 2017
For Sunday thru Monday night: main fcst concern this period is the
impending snowfall and amounts.
Model runs in decent agreement on a shortwave to approach across the
northern plains Sun, then move into/across the mid MS valley Sun
night Mon. This while a strong northern stream progged to drop into
MN Sun night/Mon. Trend is stronger with this norhtern stream
feature and toward at least some partial phasing with the mid MS
valley wave. Trend Mon night is now toward strong troughing or a mid
level low forming over the western great lakes Mon night. Fcst
confidence is good that a mdt to strong system will impact much of
the region with snow Sun afternoon into Mon night, but given detail
differences confidence in snow amounts is average this cycle.
Rather tight baroclinic zone over the area Sun into Mon for the lift
ahead of the shortwaves to work with. Broad, deep 280-300K
isentropic lift/850-500mb warm advection progged to spread across
the area starting Sun afternoon into Mon morning. Stronger of the
850-500mb F-Gen progged across the area Sun afternoon/evening.
Stronger 500-300mb pv advection with the northern stream shortwave
then progged to drop south across the area later Mon morning into
Mon evening, to keep the lift going once the lower thermo-dynamic
forcing wanes/exits the fcst area. Overall period of lift may be as
long as 36hrs. This will models progging deeper saturation in the
925-400mb layer and the SREF mean indicating the DGZ in the 50-to
100mb plus depth Sun afternoon and much of Sun night. The depth of
the moisture column, lift and deeper than average DGZ would point to
higher snow-water ratios. However, bulk of lift progged above 850mb,
while dry east to NE sfc-925mb flow out of the retreating Can high
persists over the area Sun night/Mon. Winds of 10-25 mph in this
layer as well would all point to lower snow-water ratios as snow
particles would sublime/break apart as they fall from the cloud base
to the ground.
On the easier side of snow totals with this system, (for what
feels like a rare occurrence this winter) appears the column will
be cold enough with ice the cloud tops thru the duration for the
precip as all snow. Bottom line, starting to look like at least an
advisory (3" to 6") snowfall amounts across much of the fcst area
from Sun afternoon into Mon evening. If models producing heavier
QPF during this period are more correct, upside potential of 6+"
of snow across the SW 1/2 to 2/3 of the fcst area. Still
considerable spread among both GEFS and SREF ensemble members on
QPF/snow amounts. Where there is the higher potential of 3 to 6
inches, perhaps more, of snow at this time, will issue a winter
storm watch for all of NE IA/SE MN from 21z Sun thru 00z Tue.
For Tuesday thru Friday (days 4-7): main fcst concerns this period
are slowly moderating temperatures and periodic precip chances
mainly later in the week.
Medium range model runs of 10.00z/10.12z in decent agreement for
stronger troughing to remain over the great lakes Tue, keeping the
region under deep northerly flow. Models then remain in reasonable
agreement for mid level ridging to slowly build east into the
central Conus Wed/Thu, then a shortwave to top this ridge and drop
into the region Fri. Fcst confidence good for moderating temps this
period, but low on any shortwave details/precip chances for Wed and
beyond.
Low level cold advection following the low/trough from Mon spreads
across the region thru Tue. NAEFS 850mb temps still some 1-2 std
deviations below normal at 00z Wed before starting the slow
moderation with the building ridging/rising hgts Wed into Fri.
Consensus highs still around 10F below normal Tue, over what may
well be modest snow cover, look good but may end up too warm
depending on the extent of the snow cover. Temps back to near/bit
above normal by Thu/Fri under the rising hgts and warming 850mb
temps reasonable for now. Models at odds on the timing/strength
details of shortwaves topping the building ridging and dropping in
later Thu/Fri. Some consensus for a stronger wave to drop in Fri,
but this is quite a change from the model runs of Mar 9th, thus
confidence on the low side by Fri. Left generally small consensus
RA/SN chances Thu and beyond as is for now, pending better
between model and run-to-run consistency.

A short wave trough coming across the northern Rockies this morning
will drop southeast and across the region tonight. This system will
push some mid and upper level clouds over the area for VFR ceilings
at both airports overnight into Saturday morning. No precipitation
is expected to occur as a strong area of high pressure centered over
Saskatchewan will continue to pump dry low level air into the
region. This dry air will be too much to overcome and any
precipitation will stay well to the southwest of both airports.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 230 PM CST Fri Mar 10 2017
A very dry air mass is going to remain over the area for Saturday,
resulting minimum afternoon humidity of 15 to 30 percent, especially
for areas along and east of the MS River. Winds will be lighter for
Sat, mostly 5 to 10 mph from the north and NW. Fire starts could be
active on Sat due to the low RH, but the lighter winds would keep
any potential fire from spreading very quickly. Clouds, humidities
increase on Sunday, with snow chances spreading across most areas by
late afternoon. Accumulating snow is expected all areas Sunday night
and Monday.
