below zero for a few hours this afternoon.

For tonight into New Year's Day morning, temperatures falling

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday night)
Issued at 210 PM CST Fri Dec 29 2017

The band of light snow across the southwest sections of the
forecast area is expected to be winding down with just some
lingering light snow or flurries remaining in the early evening.
Plan to maintain a small chance for this snow through about 8 p.m.
with little to no additional accumulations expected during the
evening hours. Another short wave trough caught in the northwest
flow aloft will come out of the northern Rockies late tonight and
drop southeast toward the central Mississippi River Valley for
Saturday night. The consensus of the 29.12Z model solutions is
that this wave will remain far enough south of the local area to
that the light snow from it should also stay just to the south.
So, other than an increase in the cloud cover for Saturday night,
this system should have minimal impact on the area.

The main problem through the weekend will be the intrusion of
arctic air accompanied by bitter, to at times, dangerously cold
wind chills. Looking at the 29.00Z NAEFS, temperatures at 850 mb
through the weekend will be on average about 2 standard deviations
below normal. This arctic air will overspread the region tonight
with 850 mb temperatures then expected to sit around -22C through
Sunday. Surface temperatures tonight should drop into the single
digits and teens below zero and then only recover into the single
digits above and below zero for highs Saturday. Not much overall
change in this pattern is expected for Saturday night and Sunday
before the entire region drops in the teens below zero for lows
Sunday night. The arctic air will be accompanied by northwest
winds of 10 to 20 mph tonight and Saturday before diminishing some
to around 10 mph for Saturday night through Sunday night. The
combination of cold air and wind speeds will create wind chills
in the 20 to 35 below range for much of the upcoming weekend and
necessitate the need for wind chill advisories. As of now, will
have a wind chill advisory for the entire area through Noon
Saturday. After that, most locations east of the Mississippi River
will come out of advisory criteria for a good share of the
afternoon while areas farther west remain colder than 20 below.
Will have the wind chill advisory for the western areas run from
tonight through Sunday morning with the expectation that another
advisory will be needed across the eastern sections for Saturday

Not much in the way of precipitation is expected for next week.
The flow aloft will remain northwest with large scale ridging in
place over the Rockies. A system is expected to top the ridge and
slide across the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes Tuesday night.
Right now, this system does not look like it will bring that much
moisture with it leaving the better saturation and snow chances to
the northeast across the Great Lakes. As of now, will only have
some small snow chances along and northeast of Interstate 94 for
this system. Some additional chances for light snow next Friday
with the possibility of another short wave trough rotating across
the Great Lakes. There does look to be some model differences out
that far on timing and placement of the wave. Temperatures will
moderate a little for next week with daytime highs expected to be
above zero with single digits and teens while overnight lows will
continue to drop below zero.

Watching a band of light-moderate snow move across southeast SD,
southern MN, and northern IA. The northern fringe of this snow
band is expected to impact KRST and to a lesser extent KLSE.
Expect a brief period of IFR visibility/MVFR ceilings at KRST
through 29.23Z and perhaps a couple hours of MVFR visibility/
ceilings at KLSE between 29.19Z and 29.22Z before snow moves out
later this afternoon. VFR conditions are expected to return later
this evening and continue through the rest of the period. Light
northwest winds will be the rule at both TAF airfields, increasing
a bit overnight with some gusts nearing 20 kts.

...Slippery Travel This Afternoon...

Light snow will continue this afternoon across portions of
southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa, and far southwest Wisconsin
before diminishing from west to east late this afternoon and
early evening. Slick, snow covered roads will continue with
visibility occasionally dropping below one mile in heavier snow.
Additional snow amounts this afternoon will generally be an inch
or less. If traveling this afternoon, slow down and allow extra
time to reach your destination.
