Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service La Crosse WI 722 AM CDT Sun May 7 2017 .UPDATE... Issued at 722 AM CDT Sun May 7 2017 Temperatures as of 7 am east of the Mississippi River were all above the freezing mark. Therefore, the frost advisory has been cancelled early. && .SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday) Issued at 219 AM CDT Sun May 7 2017 The large area of high pressure at the surface remains centered over western Ontario this morning with its ridge axis extending well south into the middle Mississippi River Valley. The dry north flow around this high has dropped the dew points into the upper 20s to lower 30s across the entire area. Temperatures have been slow to cool with temp/dew point spreads of 10 to 15 degrees across the area early this morning. Doubtful that much frost will end up forming before sunrise but will maintain the frost advisory until at least sunrise to see what happens. Dew points expected to drop some more through the day as the high continues to push drier air into the area and with some decent mixing, drier air from aloft will also be brought down. Looks like these should be in the lower to middle 20s for much of the day along and northeast of Interstate 94. With temperatures in that area topping out between 55 and 60 today, the minimum relative humidity should be in the 25 to 30 percent range. Fortunately the winds will be light with sustained speeds of 10 mph or less and even with the mixing, gusts today should be at most 15 mph. There could be a bit of frost potential tonight, but again, concerned whether the temp/dew point spreads will get close enough to allow frost to form. Some small rain chances then return to the forecast starting Monday afternoon and continue into Tuesday. The cut off low over eastern Canada and the northeast U.S. will start to retrograde back to the west and should be stretched out from south of Hudsons Bay to off the northeast coast. This will allow the upper level ridge axis over the central part of the country to reduce its amplitude and allow some short wave troughs to work across the area. Decent consensus among the models that one short wave trough should slide across the area Monday night and Tuesday morning. The forcing from this wave looks to be rather weak with the 07.00Z GFS showing just very weak pv advection in the 500-300 mb layer. A surface low is expected to form with the wave over South Dakota and then drop southeast across Iowa Tuesday. A warm front should extend southeast from the low and could serve as the focus for some overrunning and showers along and north of it. A band of weak frontogenesis in the 1000-700 mb layer should exist north of the warm front, which would place it over the southern portions of the forecast area. Some weak isentropic up glide will also occur over the warm front with the GFS suggesting this to be on the order of 1 to 2 ubar/s on the 300K surface. There could also be a few rumbles of thunder with this activity with about 500 J/Kg of MU Cape possible over the southern portions of the area. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Saturday) Issued at 219 AM CDT Sun May 7 2017 The models continue to struggle with the evolution of the upper air pattern and the break down of the blocking. There is still the general idea that a pretty strong system will be moving across the Pacific Ocean and as it approaches the West Coast, it will serve as a kicker to the cut off low that has been meandering across the desert southwest. This should then undercut the retrograding eastern low and move across the mid Mississippi River Valley toward the end of the week. Once this occurs, the eastern low will then stop retrograding and start to drop slowly southeast into the Great Lakes by the end of the period. If the pattern does evolve like this, most of this period could end up being dry with the bulk of the rain staying to the south. Some small rain chances will return for the end of the week into the weekend as the upper level low drops into the Great Lakes. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Monday morning) Issued at 559 AM CDT Sun May 7 2017 Other than an occasionally broken deck of altocumulus aoa 10kft mainly west of the Mississippi River, VFR conditions expected through the period with light and variable winds. && .ARX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
