.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will bring fair but cold conditions this
afternoon into early this evening. Low pressure and a warm front
approaching from the southwest will bring snow to much of the region
Friday, with a wintry mix Friday night into Saturday morning
changing to rain by Saturday afternoon. Any lingering precipitation
may change back to light snow Saturday night. Another storm system
could bring wintry precipitation to the region late Christmas Eve
night into Christmas Day.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 1228 PM EST...Cold high pressure continues to ridge in
from southeastern Ontario and southwestern Quebec this
afternoon. The mid level flow continues to transition to zonal.
The sfc anticyclone will continue to funnel southward shallow
cold and dry air with sfc dewpts falling into the single digits
and teens. The strong subsidence from the high will continue
mostly sunny skies for a few more hours, but mid and high clouds
will be on the increase from the west to southwest. The visible
and IR satellite imagery already has mid and high clouds moving
across western PA and NY. These clouds increase ahead of the
warm front approaching the OH Valley and Midwest. The tranquil
wx will continue prior to midnight, and the warm advection light
snow will begin northwest and west of the Capital Region. We
will continue to look into further headlines or upgrades with
the next issuance.

High temperatures should generally range from the upper 20s to
lower to mid 30s in the valleys, with upper teens to mid 20s
across the mountains, and especially northwest of the Capital
Region.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Winter Weather Advisories in effect for most areas near and
north of I-90 for late tonight through Saturday morning...

A complex series of low pressure systems will impact the region,
starting late tonight, and continuing into Saturday.

The first phase of this active weather will be mainly snow,
which is expected to develop prior to daybreak Friday.
Strengthening mid level isentropic lift should allow snow to
develop from west to east close to and north of the I-90
corridor between roughly 3 and 5 AM. For many of these areas, an
inch or less of snow is expected by daybreak, except locally
higher amts possible across the western Mohawk Valley where snow
develops first. Periods of snow, some moderate in intensity,
should continue through the morning and early afternoon hours
close to the I-90 corridor, and perhaps into mid to late
afternoon farther north across the southern Adirondacks and
southern VT. Models do suggest that some mid level dry air may
eventually reduce the accumulating efficiency of the snow by
late afternoon. At this time, it appears that 3-6 inches of snow
will be fairly common north of I-90, with locally higher
amounts of up to 8 inches possible. Closer to and immediately
south of I-90, 2-4 inches of snow is expected, with much less to
the south. In fact, portions of the mid Hudson Valley and NW CT
may only have a brief period of some light snow or flurries
early in the morning, with just a coating to less than an inch,
before precipitation tapers off.

Some freezing drizzle or drizzle may develop in the afternoon
once mid level dry impinges on the region from the
west/southwest.

The second phase of this complex weather scenario will unfold
later Friday night into Saturday, as the main upper level energy
currently over the SW U.S. ejects out, allowing another wave of
low pressure to track northeast toward the region. The big
caveat to this scenario is that high pressure across SE Canada
will be slow to move northeast, and actually should be
strengthening as it moves away. An ageostrophic low level
northerly component to the wind should reinforce shallow cold,
relatively dry air into the region as isentropic lift increases
aloft with the strengthening low/mid level jet associated with
the southern wave of low pressure. This should result in
freezing rain and some sleet to overspread the region later
Friday night and persist into at least Saturday morning. There
is a possibility that, as we have seen in the past, that cold
subfreezing air never dislodges in some northern areas Saturday.
At the very least, expect ice accretion of one tenth to one
quarter of an inch across much of the southern Adirondacks, Lake
George Saratoga region, and southern VT, especially adjacent to
the CT Valley through Saturday morning, with up to one tenth of
an inch closer to I-90 including the northern Berkshires and
Capital Region. However, if the cold air persists longer, even
greater ice amounts will be possible.

As far as advisory thinking, since Friday will be a busy travel
day ahead of the Holiday weekend, and the fact that moderate
snowfall accumulations in addition to some icing is expected, we
have issued a winter weather advisory for most areas near and
north of I-90, with a slightly later end time for areas north of
I-90.

Some freezing rain could occur farther south Friday night,
including the eastern Catskills, southern Berkshires and
Litchfield Hills, so advisories may be expanded later in time.
But at this point, wanted to highlight the area with greatest
immediate impacts - which will include snow and the ice.

As for temperatures, lows tonight mainly in the teens and 20s.
Highs Friday ranging from the 20s to lower 30s from I-90
northward, with mid/upper 30s to the south. Similar lows Friday
night to the daytime highs - as temps remain nearly steady, or
perhaps fall just a degree or two in the evening in a few
locations. Saturday high temperatures - which will occur late in
the day - should be in the mid 30s to lower 40s.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Potential for a coastal storm to impact the region Christmas Eve
into Christmas Day...

Overall trends in the global model camps remain similar with the
GFS the most progressive and further offshore solution for the
potential coast storm and the ECMWF more amplified with the upper
trough across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley with cyclogenesis
within the benchmark to impact our region. Per the extended forecast
discussion and coordination from WPC, a solution closer to the ECMWF
and its close ensemble members are followed with this forecast
package.

Saturday night into Sunday, we find our region in the wake of the
wintry mixture to rain event with a period of somewhat tranquil
weather under variable cloud coverage.  There could be some light
snow showers or flurries from time to time but an overall dry
forecast period expected.  Temperatures will be seasonable cool for
this time as we watch upstream trends very closely with clouds
increasing through Christmas Eve.

A potent PV anomaly will round through the digging upper long wave
trough through Sunday into Sunday evening.  This feature, along with
the eventual position of the Hudson Bay low, will dictate if/where
this coastal storm develops.  The best baroclinicity will be near
the I95 corridor with surface pressures beginning to drop as
entrance region dynamics assist with low pressure wave developing
along this baroclinic zone.  The ECMWF and GGEM suggest this wave
will develop just east of the mid-Atlantic coastline as
strengthening upper jet approaches 170kts.  The ECMWF points toward
rapidly intensifying cyclone through Christmas Day with bomb-
cyclogenesis through the Gulf of Maine.  Combination of deformation
and fgen, seems we could be in for a moderate to heavy snowfall.
However, can not completely rule out the GFS as it too remains
constant with its previous runs and ensemble mean.  Stay tuned...

In the wake of what does or doesn't develop, a broad cyclonic and
chilly pattern for most of the upcoming week with lake effect snow
along with snow showers and flurries possible.  As H850 temperatures
settle around -20C, it will feel like winter with below normal
temperatures and wind chills mainly into the single teens and teens
with some below zero readings across the Adirondacks and Lake George
Saratoga Region.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
High pressure will be in control this afternoon into early this
evening. A warm front will approach from the south and west
overnight with snow moving into the region during the morning
and through the afternoon. The snow will transition to mixed
precipitation consisting of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and
plain rain Friday night into Saturday morning from south to
north across the region as the warm front lifts through the
area.

VFR conditions will prevail prior to 06Z at KGFL/KALB/KPOU/KPSF
with mid and high clouds thickening and lowering. Some light
snow will move in between 08Z-11Z especially from KALB to KPSF
northward. CIGS will lower from 4-6 kft AGL to 1.5-2.5 kft AGL
with MVFR/IFR conditions occurring in the snow. The cigs/vsbys
will continue to lower IFR and possibly LIFR levels in the late
morning into the early afternoon.

Further south towards to KPOU some light snow may move in
between 10Z-14Z/FRI with MVFR/IFR vsbys with some snow and/or
ice pellets. The light snow and ice pellets will continue from
the late morning into the afternoon with MVFR cigs.

The wind will be from the northwest to northeast at 4-8 kts this
afternoon, and then will be light and variable at 4 kts or less
overnight. The winds will be from the northeast to southeast at
4-7 kts late tomorrow morning through the afternoon.

.HYDROLOGY...
A period of accumulating snow is likely on Friday, especially
along and north of I-90. The snow will transition to a wintry
mix and then to rain on Saturday, tapering off Saturday night.
Total QPF amounts Friday through Saturday night of three
quarters of an inch to an inch and one quarter are likely.
These amounts, along with some minor snowmelt of existing
snowpack over higher elevations, are expected to lead to within-
bank river rises, but flooding is not expected at this time.

Another round of wintry precipitation is possible Christmas Eve
night into Christmas Day, but there is high uncertainty at this
time.
