* LOCATIONS...Litchfield Hills of Connecticut, the Berkshires of 
  Massachusetts, and the Mohawk Valley, northern Fulton County, 
  Greater Capital Region, Mid Hudson Valley, Taconics, and 
  eastern Catskills of New York. 

* HAZARD TYPES...Heavy snowfall.

* Accumulations...Snow accumulation of 10 to 18 inches.

* TIMING...Snowfall will spread southwest to northeast across the
  warning area from between midnight Monday night to just before
  daybreak Tuesday morning. Snow will become heavy during the
  day Tuesday before diminishing Tuesday night. Lighter snowfall
  may linger late Tuesday night into Wednesday.

* IMPACTS...The combination of low visibility and slippery
  roadways due to heavy snowfall will result in dangerous travel

Warning for heavy snow, which is in effect from midnight tonight 
to 8 PM EDT Wednesday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in 
effect.

* LOCATIONS...Western Adirondacks and Lake George Saratoga Region
  of New York, and the southern Green Mountains of Vermont.

* HAZARD TYPES...Heavy snow.

* Snow Accumulations...12 to 18 inches, except 8 to 12 inches
  across portions of the western Adirondacks.

* Snowfall rates...One to three inches per hour is likely at 
  times Tuesday.

* TIMING...A coastal storm will bring a period of heavy snowfall
  to the region between Monday night and Wednesday. Snow will
  develop Tuesday morning, and become heavy at times by midday.

.SYNOPSIS...
A frigid airmass will remain in place for the remainder of the
weekend with temperatures some 15 to 25 degrees below normal.
Brisk and gusty winds will only make it feel even colder resulting
in dangerously cold wind chills. Monday will be dry as high
pressure moves across the region. A coastal storm is expected to
bring a plowable snowfall to much of the region late Monday
night into Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 1 pm, wind chill advisory was expired for the southern
Adirondacks and southern Greens. No changes needed to the rest
of the forecast.

As of 1100 am, wind chill advisory has expired for areas outside
of the southern Adirondacks and southern Greens, where it
remains in effect until 2 pm. Have bumped up wind gusts a few
knots after a look at the 12Z RAOB, current obs, and forecast
model soundings. Have seen gusts already 20-30 kt in spots, and
expect those gusts to continue through much of the day.
Otherwise, forecast remains on track.

Previous discussion...For Today...The region remains under
cyclonic flow. There will be less in the way of any lake effect
as any bands are expected to remain west of the area.
Temperatures will finally start to moderate a little bit with
highs today in the teens and 20s with still a few single digits
across the western Adirondacks and southern Green Mountains.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
A Winter Storm Watch has been issued from Monday night through
Wednesday for a potentially heavy snowfall.

For tonight...High pressure will build southeast from southern
Canada into the northeast US late tonight. Lows will generally
range from 5 below to 10 above zero.

On Monday...A large ridge of high pressure will be across the
region with plenty of sunshine to start the day although clouds
will start to increase during the afternoon ahead of the next
system. Highs will be milder than recent days ranging from the
upper teens to mid 30s.

On Monday night...A deep surface low is expected to track near
Delmarva and head northeast. This will set the stage for a
large snowfall event across much of the northeast US. Snowfall
is expected to develop after midnight across our southern areas
and quickly expand northeastward. By daybreak several inches of
snow will likely have already fallen across areas south of the
Greater Capital District with an inch or so from the Capital
District northward. Lows Monday night will be in the upper
single digits to lower 20s.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Significant snowfall remains possible across at least portions of
eastern NY and adjacent western New England for Tuesday-Wednesday...

Differences have increased among 00Z/12 global deterministic model
guidance regarding the track of the main coastal low for Tuesday,
with similar differences remaining in their ensembles compared to
previous cycles.

The 00Z/12 GFS and GEFS have trended farther east with the overall
storm track, with less QPF across eastern NY, with the most
significant QPF/snowfall closer to the coast. The 00Z/12 ECMWF has
trended a bit farther N/W with the heavier QPF compared to the
previous 12Z/11 cycle, although WPC notes that this was an outlier
among its ensemble members and therefore not much confidence can be
gained from this one cycle. The 00Z/12 NAM and most SREF members
remain on the western envelope of potential storm tracks, while the
00Z/GEM has shifted farther W.

So, there still remains uncertainty regarding the ultimate track of
the storm, and placement of heaviest QPF/snowfall, with areas across
western New England and the mid Hudson Valley currently being the
favored areas for heaviest amounts. As the main shortwave currently
traversing the northern Rockies continues to track SE, better
sampling via the upper air network hopefully will yield greater
consensus with today's model cycles.

With greater uncertainties introduced, have not changed much
regarding overall snowfall amts across the region at this time. One
thing that needs to be watched, even in the wake of the main coastal
low, will be how the upper level energy in its wake tracks, as a
path of the closed mid/upper level center across southern portions
of the region could allow persistent light to moderate snow, with
even some heavier bursts, to linger well into Wednesday, leading to
moderate/heavy amts across the region even if the main coastal
feature tracks farther south/east, due to a combination of continued
low/mid level Atlantic inflow, mid/upper level deformation processes
combined with mesoscale effects such as upslope and possible Mohawk-
Hudson Convergence, so even if amts are less during Tuesday, we can
not rule out additional moderate snowfall amts Tue nt into Wed
producing at least locally heavy storm total amounts. Trends will
continue to be watched closely.

It will also be breezy/windy Tue, with some gusts of 30-40 mph
possible, particularly across higher elevations. Temperatures may
not rise much at all Tuesday, and for now, have sided a few degrees
below consensus, with widespread 20s expected, but it is quite
possible that many areas may only reach the upper teens to lower 20s
given strong wet bulb effects along with a persistent low level
northerly ageostrophic wind component.

On Wednesday, strong northwest winds may cause quite a bit of
additional blowing/drifting snow as well. Highs should mainly be in
the 20s, after overnight lows in the teens to lower 20s.

The storm system should pull away by Thursday, although can not rule
out some lingering snow showers across at least some higher
elevations of western New England.

Brief ridging builds in for Friday, before additional upper level
energy and height falls approach from the northern Plains and Great
Lakes region, along with the possibility of snow, or a mix of
snow/rain developing next weekend. The latest 00Z/12 ECMWF actually
suggests a more potent storm system developing during this time, but
given that it has been noted as an outlier earlier in the period for
the Tuesday-Wednesday system among its ensemble members, will not
place much confidence in this solution, especially at the day 7+
time range. Temperatures should slowly moderate Friday-Saturday,
although likely still remaining below seasonal levels.

Few/sct stratocu around 4-5kft today with some higher cirrus as
well. The stratocu will diminish this evening with mainly just
gradually lowering/thickening mid/high clouds Monday. VFR
conditions are expected to continue.

WNW winds will continue to gust near 25 kt at KALB/KPSF for the
remainder of the day, with winds diminishing this evening and
becoming light late tonight into early Monday.
