.SYNOPSIS...
A period of light snow will move across the region today which
will signify a reinforcement of the arctic air with increasing
winds. Minor accumulations are expected at this time. The arctic
air mass will continue to impact the region with dangerous wind
chills through the holiday weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 330 AM EST...A strong mid level jet, over 125kts @ H500,
was quickly tracking across the Ohio Valley this early Saturday
morning. The low level ageostrophic response will be increasing
lift and light snow to develop across most of the region
through the daylight morning hours from west to east. Upstream
radar mosaics are very light at the present time (outside of
lake effect bands), however, associated lift and deeper moisture
profiles should result in the aforementioned light snow to
evolve. Due to the arctic air mass in place, snow ratios will be
quite high with light QPFs, over 20:1 ratio. So this places snow
accumulations around 1" in most locations with locally 2" into
the higher terrain and portions of the western Mohawk Valley
where some contributions of Lake Ontario should influence some
higher amounts in the wake of the departing wave and backing low
level wind trajectories. As considerable cloud coverage will be
in place across the region, after a very cold start, likely not
much of 'moderation' expected with single digits and teens.
Winds today will generally be around 5kts.

In summary, dangerous cold temperatures along with bitter wind
chills as wind speed momentum increases Sunday into New Years
Day.
Sun -20C to -25C @ H850, sub -40C @ H500 are progged to move
across the region through the short term period with related
1000-500dm thicknesses below 500dm. Hires numerical from 4km WRF BTV
and 3km NAM suggest some Lake Champlain effect will be possible
this evening. Last open pass from the polar orbiter suggests
the lake is still open enough for this potential as we will keep
clouds and the slight chance for snow showers to the north and
northeast of Albany this evening with a north-northeast low
level winds. Elsewhere, terrain based snow showers/flurries
should subside overnight into Sunday morning. Some lake effect
snow may impact portions of southern Herkimer County, western
Schoharie into portions of the eastern Catskills Sunday night,
however, inversion heights appear to be quite low, 3k feet, for
nothing more than a dusting to perhaps a tenth of an inch at
this time.
The temperatures and wind chills will be the main impact through
the short term as we will have advisory level criteria being
satisfied initially then transitioning likely to a wind chill
warning for the advisory area Sunday night into Monday. Then
advisory will likely expand into the remainder of the region at
that time. We thank the surrounding offices for the excellent
collaboration this early Saturday morning. New records will
likely be tested or exceeded through the short term, stay tuned.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Very cold Arctic air will remain in place through the entire
extended period and will actually be reinforced by the end of the
period as well. Temperatures will continue to average well below
normal through the entire week, although precipitation will be
rather limited over the area.
Fast moving upper level shortwave trough will be moving across the
area for Monday night and into New England for Tuesday. Moisture
will be very limited with this feature, so most areas won't see any
precipitation. The only places that will see some snow showers are
across the far western Mohawk Valley and western Adirondacks, as a
band of lake-effect snow will develop on the backside of the trough
and bring a quick shot at some lake-effect snow for those areas.
Otherwise, skies will be partly to mostly cloudy and temps will be
continued very cold. With sub-500 dm 1000-500 mb thickness in
place, we can expect temps to be well below normal. Overnight lows
will range from 5 above in the mid-Hudson Valley to as low as -20
degrees over the Adirondacks and Glens Falls area. Highs on Tuesday
will mainly be in the single digits and teens.
A brief area of surface high pressure and weak ridging aloft will
move across the region for Tuesday night into Wednesday. This
should allow for the lake-effect activity to briefly dwindle down on
Tuesday night, although it will likely begin again at some point on
Wednesday within the southwest flow ahead of the next advancing
system due to the very cold conditions still in place. This may
affect the far northwest Adirondacks with some snow showers,
otherwise, it will be continued dry across the region with partly
cloudy conditions. This may actually be the "mildest" portion of the
extended period, with lows mainly in the single digits for Tuesday
night and highs on Wednesday in the teens and 20s.
Low pressure will be organizing off the Southeast coast for the
middle part of the week, but nearly all operational and ensemble
members show this storm remaining well south/east of the region as
it moves northward, keeping it mainly quiet over our area, as it
never links up with an approaching northern stream clipper system.
Despite not getting any direct impacts from this storm, the flow
around this storm system will reinforce the cold weather over our
area for the remainder of the week and into the next weekend. 850
hpa temps may be as low as -25 to -30 degrees C by the end of the
week.
Some lake-effect or lake-enhanced snow showers are possible again
for far western areas for Wed night through Thursday night, although
the bulk of the activity may remain to our west over central NY due
to the expected northwest flow in place.
Highs on Thursday will be in the single digits and teens, but only
reach -5 to +15 for Friday. Overnight lows will be in the single
digits for Wed night, but fall below zero for most areas for both
Thursday and Friday night. Some spots in the Adirondacks and near
Glens Falls will be around -20 F for both Thursday and Friday night.
Combined with some breezy conditions behind the departing coastal
storm, wind chill values could be near 40 below zero across the
Adirondacks for Thurs/Fri nights, so wind chill headlines look to be
needed over much of the area once again for the end of the week.

.AVIATION /08Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Flying conditions are currently VFR for all TAF sites ahead of an
approaching storm system. IR satellite imagery shows some high
clouds are quickly approaching the area from the west and upstream
surface observations show bkn-ovc ceiling heights of around 5 kft
over western and central NY. Clouds should increase through the
remainder of the overnight hours, with all sites seeing ovc cigs at
4-5 kft by daybreak Saturday. KPSF has been seeing some on and off
MVFR conditions due to upslope low clouds, so that may continue from
time to time over the next few hours until the clouds increase from
the west.
Based off hi-res model guidance, some very light snow is expected to
spread across the region by the mid-morning hours (generally 14z-
15z) thanks to a passing clipper system. This will allow flying
conditions to lower to MVFR levels for both cigs/visibility. Cannot
totally rule out brief periods of IFR conditions for late this
morning into this afternoon, although there is not enough confidence
in its extent/exact timing to include in the TAF at this time.
However, most of the snow should be very light and won't amount to
very much and should be generally MVFR for the majority of the time.
Light southerly winds will be around 5 kts.
Light snow should taper off by the evening hours, and flying
conditions will return back to VFR for late Sat evening into Sat
night as lower clouds move out. Winds will switch to the west to
northwest around 5 kts.
Outlook...
Sunday to Wednesday: No Operational Impact. NO SIG WX.

.HYDROLOGY...
Light snow will impact the region today into tonight with an
inch or two expected in many locations.
Little to no significant precipitation is expected for the first
week of 2018. A bitterly cold air mass will persist through
next week, allowing ice to develop, expand and thicken.
Freeze-up ice jams may occur in places where the average
temperature is zero or below for three or more consecutive days.
The main areas of concern will be the southern Adirondacks,
Lake George Region and the southern Green Mountains. River
gauges may experience erratic readings due to the ice.
