.SYNOPSIS...
The beginning of much colder weather starts tonight. It will
become bitterly cold this week. Heavy lake effect snow will
continue to impact portions of the western Adirondacks into
Tuesday night. Westerly winds will remain brisk into Tuesday
evening.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Lake Effect Snow Warning continues through 6 AM Wednesday for
Hamilton/northern Herkimer Counties...

As of 1220 AM EST, Lake Effect Ontario snowband continues
across northern Herkimer and central Hamilton Cos, extending
into NW Warren CO. Still very favorable conditions for a
significant lake effect snow event through daybreak as an
intense single snowband persists off of Lake Ontario. Looking
at regional radars and IR satellite the band may have weakened
just a bit across this region from earlier this evening. Still
expect snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches an an hour at times are
expected with in the band in our area across northern Herkimer
and Hamilton Counties. Although there will be occasional
oscillations of the band southward, especially later Tuesday.
Where the band persists, 12-18 inches or more of snow is likely,
which at this time, should be just south of Route 28. The band
will shift southward beginning late in the day Tuesday and is
expected to weaken as it tries to impact the western Mohawk
Valley.

Meanwhile, some fragments of the Lake Erie snowband continue
across portions of Schoharie CO and occasionally east into the
Capital Region, with additional snow showers/flurries extending
into the eastern Catskills and northern portions of the mid
Hudson Valley. These fragments are expected to gradually shift
southward toward daybreak and weaken, but can not rule out some
scattered coatings to less than an inch accumulation, especially
across Schoharie CO and the eastern Catskills, proximate to
slightly better Lake moisture.

Turns much colder tonight with lows in the single digits into
the teens. Not much recovery Tuesday with highs ranging from
only the single digits to mid 20s.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Lake Effect Snow Warning continues through 6 AM Wednesday for
Hamilton/northern Herkimer Counties...

The main highlights in the short term period include lake effect
snow diminishing as a cold, dry arctic airmass filters in. This
airmass is likely to result in widespread below-zero
temperatures Wednesday night and Thursday night. A light to
moderate breeze will accompany the frigid air Wednesday night
resulting in the coldest wind chills of the period, ranging from
-5F to -40F. Wind chill headlines will likely be needed in
 future forecast packages.

The broad longwave trough will continue to reside over the
northern tier of the US throughout the period. The heart of the
cold airmass aloft Wednesday night will be characterized by H850
temps approaching -25C and 1000-850 mb thicknesses around 500
dam. Expansive anticyclone centered across the northern Plains
will extend eastward, increasingly encompassing the eastern US
with time, disrupted only by the Great Lakes aggregate. The
colder, denser, drier air sliding in is expected to veer the
low-level wind field to northerly across Lake Ontario by
Tuesday night, resulting in a contraction and southward shift of
the dominant lake effect band. By Wednesday, most if not all of
the accumulating lake effect activity will have ended, with
just chance PoPs in the forecast across the western
Adirondacks/Mohawk and Schoharie Valleys/Catskills. With the
center of the surface high off to the west and the surface low
that brought us the Christmas snow remaining relatively
stationary off the Labrador coast at sub-970 mb, a respectable
pressure gradient will remain over the forecast area,
contributing to frigid wind chills. Minimum forecast wind chills
are mainly 0 to -20F Tuesday night and -5 to -40F Wednesday
night. By Thursday, the surface high will become centered over
southeastern Canada and the northeastern US, likely resulting in
a good deal of sunshine but high temps only around 0 to 20 F.
Some uncertainty with low temps Thursday night with the high
overhead providing the opportunity for some truly frigid
overnight lows (but with less of a wind chill factor given the
lighter winds), although clouds look to increase late ahead of
the next system. Still a bit early for any wind chill headlines,
but they are looking likely in future forecast packages. If
Albany drops below zero as expected, it will be the first time
since February 15, 2016.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
There is a signal in sources of long range guidance and ensembles
for a potential storm either early next weekend or the end of next
weekend. With such a difference in timing and track of the potential
system, indicating slight chances to chances for snow from Friday
through Sunday and will have to zero in on the timing and regions
for the best chances as guidance comes together as we approach the
weekend. Lake effect snow over the western Adirondacks and/or
western Mohawk Valley may develop Saturday/Sunday with northwesterly
low-level flow and sufficient surface-to-h850 temp differences.
Location/timing of the snow will depend on the timing of the exiting
low pressure system.

H850 temps will range from -15F to -30F over the weekend
with surface temperatures colder than normal. Daytime highs
throughout the period will be in the single digits north of the
Capital Region and in the teens south of Albany. Lows will range
from the single digits (southern zones) down to about -15F (northern
zones) on most nights throughout the period with some potential wind
chill issues at night in northern areas.

.AVIATION /05Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Cold air spreading into our region through this evening and strong
west to southwest winds become west this morning.  Some lake effect
clouds will affect the TAF sites from time to time but snow shower
activity should not extend into the TAF sites, other than a few
flurries possible at times at KGFL, KALB and KPSF but not carrying
VCSH as any flurries would be isolated to scattered through this
evening.  Clouds will be scattered with periods of broken above 3000
feet through this evening and visibilities unrestricted

Winds will be southwest to west through daybreak at around 10 Kt and
a few intermittent gusts near 20 Kt, especially at KALB and KPSF.
Winds become west between daybreak and midday and increase to 15 to
20 Kt with gusts 20 to 25 Kt.  West winds diminish back to around 10
Kt this evening.
