Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A low pressure system will bring light to moderate
accumulating snow to southern portions of the forecast area late
tonight into early Friday. Cold Arctic air will spill into the
region during the weekend, with blustery conditions resulting in
very cold wind chills. A larger snowstorm has the potential to
affect the region early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Narrow band of precipitation across the far southern portions of
the area is finally hitting the ground as the atmospheric column
became saturated. Temperatures have also quickly fallen under
the precip shield, changing the initial rain showers over to
snow. As a surface low strengthens to our south, precip (mainly
snow) will continue to fall across far southern portions of the
region through the morning. Ascent maximized in the snow growth
region should allow for some fairly good snowfall rates
approaching 1" per hour at times this morning through about 15Z
over extreme southern portions of the region, and some good
snow ratios averaging around 15:1. This will likely result in
some issues with the morning commute. Little to no snowfall is
expected from the Capital District northward if model trends
hold.

As the surface low deepens offshore, it will draw in colder air
from the northwest as the polar vortex shifts from Hudson Bay to
southern Quebec. Winds will once again increase with gusts of
30-35kt likely this afternoon. An arctic boundary will drop
south through the region later today, sending a reinforcing
shot of cold air into the region. There is potential for snow
squalls as the boundary moves through, especially north of the
Capital District.

Temperatures will plummet overnight into the single digits and
low teens and below zero across the Adirondacks. With winds
remaining breezy overnight, wind chills are expected to drop to
dangerously low levels in the Western Adirondacks, Mohawk
Valley, Eastern Catskills, and Southern Vermont. Therefore, have
issued a wind chill advisory from 1 AM Saturday to 1 PM Saturday
for these areas.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Expecting an unseasonably frigid day Saturday as the H850 cold
pocket of -20 to -25C shifts overhead. An impressive pressure
gradient will be maintained between the sub-960 mb surface low
north of Newfoundland and the 1040 mb-plus high over central
Canada. Another day of 25-35kt gusts appears likely, so wind
chills will only "recover" into the negative teens to positive
teens. We may come close to the record low maximum temp at
Albany, which is 20F (1940). A few snow showers may be found
over the Western Mohawk Valley, Schoharie County, and Eastern
Catskills, with light accumulation owing to the extremely dry
airmass. Winds will finally diminish late Saturday night, but
probably not enough to completely decouple across the area. Even
so, another frigid night with wind chills ranging from the
single digits to near -20.

Sunday will be a fairly tranquil but chilly day as additional
high pressure works its way into New York. Temperatures Sunday
afternoon look to reach the teens into the mid 20s under partly
sunny skies.

All eyes are on the potential meteorological bomb, nor-easter, for
the first half of next week.

We begin on a rather calm/tranquil note Sunday night into Monday as
a narrow wedge of high pressure extending across southern Canada and
into the middle Atlantic Region will have its influence across the
region.  As H850 temperatures will be hovering between -15C to -20C,
surface temperatures will be quick chilly.  As cloud coverage
increases through Monday, this may limit daytime highs from reaching
the freezing mark as suggested by latest MOS.

Then most of the attention was focused on the upcoming nor'easter
through the mid-week period.  00Z model guidance is in general good
agreement with potent pv-anomaly and 120-140kt upper jet diving
southeast from Columbia-Alberta Provinces down into the mid-
Mississippi River Valley overnight Monday into Tuesday.  Meanwhile,
subtropical jet across the Gulf of Mexico and southeast CONUS
becomes increasingly energetic as a weak impulse along the southern
periphery of the approaching long wave trough moves across this
area.  These elements appear, and want, to phase over the mid-
Atlantic and rapidly develop a surface low overnight through
Tuesday.  Surface pressure drops are very impressive, a near
meteorological bomb, by the time the surface low approaches Cape Cod
vicinity.  However, details in the model guidance will make a huge
difference in impacts for our region.  All thermal profiles are
snow, but confidence in location where the precipitation shield
remains in question.  The GFS is the most aggressive this run with
QPF values around 2.00".  The ECMWF and the GGEM are further east
this run with the higher QPF values to the south and east of Albany.
Ensemble spread and plume diagrams from the GEFS, while lean toward
the GFS, suggest the spread in solutions are narrowing with many
members suggesting a high impact snow event for the region.  Even if
the lower QPF were to verify, the liquid-snow ratio appears to be a
bit higher than climatology given the cold profiles preceding this
event.  For now, we will introduce this into HWO.

Wednesday through Thursday, brisk and cold conditions with
additional snow showers, especially favored upslope areas.
Depending on the snow accumulations, could be quite a bit of blowing
and drifting given tight pressure gradient and H850 wind magnitudes
at or above 40kts.

Temperatures through the period will be below normal and
precipitation, which will be highly dependent on coastal storm,
could average above normal.

.AVIATION /09Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Increasing high and mid level clouds continues to advect into the
region with local radar imagery suggesting an increase with
reflectivities toward KPOU.  However, dewpoint depressions remain
high at this time so it will take a little additional time for lower
levels to saturate for precipitation to develop.  As this wave
tracks from west to east, along with weak upper support, expect near
IFR conditions for KPOU.  Toward KPSF, some light snow is possible
where MVFR conditions are possible late tonight into Friday morning.
The snow should taper off through the afternoon hours for KPOU and
KPSF with improving conditions expected thereafter.

Further north, it should stay dry for KALB/KGFL with continued VFR
conditions for the overnight and into the day on Friday.

In the wake of this system, west to northwest winds will increase to
10-15 kts with some higher gusts for late in the day and into the
evening, especially for KALB/KPSF.

.HYDROLOGY...
A light to moderate snow will continue this morning over far
southern portions of the service area. QPF amounts are expected
to be less than 0.40". A frigid airmass will set up over the
region during the weekend with little precipitation and no snow
melt expected. A larger snowstorm is possible early next week.

The MMEFS does not indicate any river forecast points reaching
flood stage due to runoff from snowmelt and rainfall at this
time.
