.SYNOPSIS...
The winds will gradually subside overnight, as a strong storm moves
out to sea east of the Canadian Maritimes. An arctic cold front will
cross the region on Friday, and will bring isolated to scattered
snow showers with a few snow squalls. In wake of the arctic cold
front passage, the coldest air mass of the winter season will be
ushered in Friday night through Saturday night. With frigid
temperatures and gusty winds, wind chill values will become
dangerously cold during this time, especially across the higher
terrain.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
As of 1215 AM EST, some Lake Effect snowbands currently extend
from Lake Ontario into portions of Schoharie/Albany Cos...into
the central/southern Taconics and central/southern Berkshires,
with another band extending into the southeast Catskills. These
bands are expected to slowly drift south over the next few
hours, but could still produce localized snowfall amts of a few
tenths of an inch...up to an inch or two...with the greatest
amts most likely across higher terrain of the southeast
Catskills. Some snow showers/flurries may extend into portions
of the mid Hudson Valley and Litchfield CO CT as well over the
next 3 hours, with localized coatings to less than one half inch
of accum possible.

Otherwise, a very cold night is expected compared to recent
nights with widespread teens in the valleys, and single digits
over the southern Adirondacks, southern VT, the northern Berks
and parts of the eastern Catskills, Lake George Region, and the
western Mohawk Valley.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY/...
An arctic cold front and associated weak surface low will cross
the region Friday afternoon. Isolated to scattered snow showers
will accompany the front. Forecast soundings showing well mixed
environment with near dry-adiabatic lapse rates up to around 10
kft, so will have to watch for potential snow squalls. Limiting
factor will be lack of moisture with surface dewpoints only in
the single digits, so only isolated snow squalls anticipated at
this time. Temperatures will warm into the 30s ahead of the
front from the Capital District southward in the Hudson Valley,
with mainly 20s across the higher terrain.

In wake of the arctic cold front passage, a bitterly cold air
mass will settle into the region Friday night. The coldest air
of the winter season is expected, with 1000-500mb thickness
values in the 490s and 850mb temps of around -20C to -27C. This
will be an advective cold, with persistent gusty northwest winds
Friday night through Saturday. Frigid temps in the single
digits to near ten below zero combined with the winds will yield
wind chill values mainly in the -10 to -30 range. Wind chill
advisories and/or warnings will likely be needed. The coldest
readings will be over the higher terrain. Some lake effect snow
showers will affect areas west of the Hudson Valley Friday
night, but northwest flow and dry air mass will lead to narrow
multi-bands with very light accumulations.

The cold wind chills will last well into Saturday morning, with
temperatures not rising much due to the continued cyclonic
northwest flow and bitterly cold air mass in place. Highs only
expected to reach the teens and 20s even with fairly abundant
sunshine. Persistent northwest breeze will make it feel even
colder. Additional wind chill headlines will likely be needed
Saturday night, as it will still be breezy through much of the
night with continued frigid temperatures. High pressure will
build in by Sunday, with some moderation in temperatures
compared to previous days, but still below normal for early
March. Wind speeds will be much lower though, so it will feel
more tolerable despite cold temperatures.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The extended period features temperatures rebounding back above
normal with some ridging building in over the East Coast to
start the week. A couple of systems Monday night through the
mid-week will keep the weather unsettled across upstate NY and
New England.

Sunday night into Monday...high pressure drifts off the Mid
Atlantic Coast. A return flow of milder air moves into the
region to start the week. Temps will be on the cold side Sunday
night with a few snow showers west of the Hudson River Valley.
Lows will be mainly in the teens with some single digits over
the southern Adirondacks. A warm front moves north and east of
the Great Lakes Region and towards the Northeast with low and
mid level warm advection kicking in on Monday. Some isolated to
scattered snow to rain showers are possible across the southern
Dacks, otherwise it will be mostly dry, clouds mixing with
sunshine and milder for Monday with highs in the upper 40s to
lower 50s in the valleys, and upper 30s to mid 40s over the
hills and mountains.

Monday night into Tuesday...The mid and upper level ridge axis
drifts over NY and New England, as the sfc warm front moves
across eastern NY and western New England. The synoptic forcing
increases with the isentropic lift for some scattered showers
late Monday night into Tuesday. Some snow showers are possible
north and east of the Capital Region before the boundary layer
warms. The highest pops were kept over the western Adirondacks
and western Mohawk Valley. Temps will continue to be above
normal with 30s for lows, and in the lower to mid 50s in the
valley areas, and mid 40s to lower 50s over the hills and
mountains.

Tuesday night into Wednesday...The cold front to the system
quickly approaches Tue night into Wed morning with another chc
of showers. The 12Z EC and GFS show a decent burst of rainfall
with the frontal passage, since some Gulf of Mexico moisture is
briefly tapped. Cold advection kicks in during the afternoon
with colder and brisk conditions returning. Lows will be in the
30s to lower 40s from northwest to southeast across the forecast
area. Highs will be in the upper 30s to upper 40s north and
west of the Capital Region with upper 40s to mid 50s to the
south and east.

Wed night into Thursday...Some upslope and or lake effect snow
showers linger Wed night with a clipper bringing more snow
showers potentially THU pm. The GFS is more aggressive with the
clipper than the EC at this time with some light snows possible
north of the Capital Region with some rain and snow showers
south and east. Temps cool down closer to early March normals by
THU.

.AVIATION /05Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A strong low pressure system continues to move east of the
Canadian Maritimes early this evening. High pressure continues
to ridge in from the lower MS River Valley. The sfc pressure
gradient will gradually subside overnight. A short-wave and its
associated clipper surface low will quickly approach in the NW
flow tomorrow afternoon with some scattered snow showers and
isolated squalls during the afternoon into the evening

VFR conditions will dominate the next 18-24 hrs at
KGFL/KALB/KPSF/KPOU. Some mid and high clouds will increase
especially between 08-12Z ahead of the clipper. The clouds will
continue to thicken and lower during the afternoon with some
snow showers or a squall getting close to the TAF sites between
17Z/FRI and 04Z/SAT. There may be brief reductions to MVFR or
even IFR levels late in the TAF period, but for now have VCSH
groups with cigs between 3.5-5 kft AGL. Later TAF's will address
snow showers/squall potential.

The winds will gradually diminish from the W to NW at 10-16 kts
at KALB/KPOU/KGFL with gusts 20-25 kts...to 7-12 kts between
06Z-12Z. KPSF will have northwest winds of 16-20 kts until
after midnight with some gusts to around 30 kts. Expect the
winds to generally be from the northwest at 10-15 kts late
this morning into the afternoon with gusts 20-25 kts especially
at KALB/KPSF. Winds may even get stronger during the evening
with gusts up to 36 kts.

.HYDROLOGY...
No widespread hydro problems are expected over the next several
days. With very cold temperatures building in and lasting
through the weekend, runoff will be decreasing considerably.

The only small area to watch is the West Canada Creek
downstream of Hinckley, which continues to slowly rise and may
reach minor flood stage tonight into Friday.

Otherwise, ice formation will be possible again this weekend,
especially on more stagnant and shallow bodies of water.

Temperatures will moderate back to above normal levels early
next week, with next chance of precip expected to arrive Tuesday
into Wednesday as a warm front and cold front move through the
region.
