.SYNOPSIS...
A storm system which brought us steady rainfall this earlier
today has tapered off to scattered rain showers and this will
continue for the remainder of the day. High pressure will
briefly build back into the area for Wednesday with a dry day
before another storm system brings more rain to the area for
Thursday into Friday. The combination of rainfall and snowmelt
will allow for some flooding in some parts of the area by late
in the week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 145 PM EDT, An upper level shortwave, seen in GOES-16 WV
imagery, is currently lifting through NY into New England. This
will allow for scattered light to moderate rain showers to
continue through this afternoon and evening and may even persist
into part of the overnight period. There is some clearing moving
into NE PA and western NY per latest visible imagery and this is
where some thunderstorms have been popping up. So cannot rule
out isolated thunder, mainly across the southern half of the
forecast area later this afternoon. But it doesn't look as
favorable due to the current cloud cover. So in terms of the
forecast, not much change was needed at this time. Just updated
pops and temps based on current trends and sent updates to NDFD
and web servers.
Prev Disc...
Rain has decreased in coverage over much of the area as one area
of upper dynamics exits. Another piece of upper energy is seen
in water vapor satellite imagery in the OH Valley and
approaching the Appalachians. This upper energy should support
some development of new showers and expand the areas of rain
currently in central/western NY through the southern
Adirondacks. Some weak instability could support isolated
thunder in some of the moderate rain in central and southern
areas.
The additional rain looks to be light to moderate and
rainfall amounts will add to the run off into are rivers but
snow melt looks to be slow and gradual with temperatures in
areas of terrain, where most of the snow is, in the 40s. Winds
in southern VT and the northern Berkshires are gusty this
morning, but the winds in all areas will be weakening to light
through the day as well, which does not allow for rapid or
maximized snow melt. We will still keep and eye out for isolated
minor flooding later today and tonight. The previous AFD has a
few more details and is below...
Overall, most areas will wind up seeing around an inch of rain
between with the combination of rain from earlier this morning
through this evening. See our Hydro discussion below for how we
expect this rainfall to impact the area waterways.
Despite cloud cover, temperatures look to reach the mid 40s to
mid 50s today for most areas. The warmest temps will be in the
far southern areas, where places like the mid-Hudson Valley may
briefly get in to the storm's warm sector. A few spots in the
sheltered areas within the eastern Adirondacks and southern VT
will remain in the upper 30s to low 40s today, where the low-
level cold air is deepest thanks to the snow cover in place .
The other issue today will be some strong, gusty winds across
channeled mountain valley areas of western New England. As is
typical within a warm advection regime, gusty e-se winds will be
possible across the southern Greens, northern Taconics and
Berkshires this morning. Some gusts of 30-40 mph will be
possible through noon. These winds should diminish this
afternoon, as the strongest low-level jet winds shift away from
the area.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Rainfall will be tapering off tonight, as the surface low tracks
by to the north and the upper level shortwave moves across the
area. There could be some additional rain showers thanks to the
cyclonic flow, but these will be light and decreasing in
coverage by late in the night. As colder air works in aloft, the
rain showers could mix with some wet snow across the highest
terrain of the Adirondacks and southern Greens, but no
accumulation is expected. Temperatures will fall into the mid
30s to mid 40s for tonight.
On Wednesday, clouds look to break for some sunshine, as a brief
area of high pressure moves across the area, along with some
shortwave ridging. Valley areas look to reach the mid 50s to low
60s with a partly sunny sky. It should remain cooler over far
northern areas, with some lingering clouds due to low-level
moisture trapped beneath an inversion.
The break in the weather will be brief, as another storm system
will be moving in from the southwest. Although this storm will
take a similar track to the last storm, it will have much more
potent upper level dynamics associated with it, along with a
strong area of low pressure. It should be dry to start
Wednesday night with increasing clouds, but precipitation looks
to move in from the west for the late night hours. With temps
falling into the mid 30s to low 40s, precip looks to begin as
rain (although a few high terrain spots could see a brief bit of
snow or sleet mix in at the onset with little to no accumulation).
Another round of steady rainfall ahead of an approaching warm
front will be in place for Thursday morning into Thursday
afternoon. With a low-level jet of 50-60 kts out of the
southeast, plenty of moisture will be transported into the
region with at least moderate rainfall. In addition, some
thunder will be possible across southern areas as well. The
heaviest precipitation looks to occur during the afternoon hours
as the storm's triple point moves across the area. Temperatures
look to remain the 40s throughout the day as well.
With the closed off upper level low directly over the area,
some rainfall will continue into Thursday night, although it
probably won't be as widespread or as intense as during the day
Thursday. It will remain cloudy with on and off rain showers and
temperatures in the mid 30s to mid 40s.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Guidance is in general agreement a stacked low pressure system which
will have begun to fill and weaken should be moving gradually
northeastward across the region through the weekend. Chances for
precipitation will be in the decrease each day as the system moves
off to our east with rain still likely across much of the forecast
area Friday. As the system departs guidance has ridging building in
at all levels of the atmosphere to close out the weekend and start
the new work week resulting in a return to fair weather to the area.
Below normal temperatures are expected for Friday and Saturday with
Saturday a bit cooler than Friday. However temperatures are expected
to moderate to seasonable levels Sunday with sunshine and go above
normal Monday as 850 mb temperatures rise to about 10 degrees and a
southerly return flow develops about the departing surface high.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Expecting mainly MVFR conditions through the evening with some
IFR possible at times into the overnight period as scattered
rain showers continue. Some fog may be possible during the
overnight period but did not include it in the TAFS at this
time. Otherwise, conditions are expected to improve back to VFR
tomorrow as high pressure builds into the region.
Winds will generally be 5-15 kts from the east-southeast
through this evening then gradually shift to the west-northwest
by tomorrow morning as the current system exits to our east.
Some gusts of up to 25 kts will be possible, mainly at PSF and
ALB this afternoon.

A steady rainfall is expected across the entire region for
today, which will taper to showers by tonight. Most areas will
see around an inch of rainfall. Although Wednesday will be
mainly dry, more rain is expected for Thursday into Friday with
another storm system.

.HYDROLOGY...
A Flood Watch remains in effect for the entire County Warning
Area through Saturday morning...
Total rainfall through today will generally be an inch to an
inch and a half. This rainfall will allow for rises on rivers
and streams, and many main stem rivers will start to approach
bankfull. With temperatures above freezing, some snowmelt will
contribute to some additional runoff as well, although snowmelt
will be somewhat limited due to temperatures remaining in the
upper 30s to mid 40s across the higher elevations. As a result
of this, a few river points across the Adirondacks may approach
minor flood stage by late tonight, but most main stem rivers
should remain within their banks at this time.
In addition, the rainfall this morning may allow for some
ponding of water in urban, low lying and poor drainage areas.
Many fields and yards may have standing water. However,
widespread small stream is not expected, as rainfall intensity
and amounts do not look to exceed flash flood guidance at this
time. Any poor drainage flooding should be receding by late
today into tonight.
Although rivers and streams may remain steady or experience
slightly receding levels on Wednesday, additional precipitation
later in the week will cause more rises. As of right now, about
1.50 to 2.00 inches of additional rainfall is expected for
Thursday into Friday, with some more snow melt as well. The
latest MMEFS guidance suggests some main stem rivers may have
minor flooding, especially along the Hoosic, Housatonic and
upper Hudson Basins. In addition, another round of urban and
poor drainage flooding looks to occur, especially on Thursday
afternoon when precipitation is expected to be heaviest.
