.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will track into the Great Lakes and southeast Canada
overnight into Wednesday. A warm front will bring periods of rain
tonight, with freezing rain and sleet across northern areas. A cold
front will then sweep across the region Wednesday morning with
scattered rain showers and gusty winds. Colder air will filter into
the region later Wednesday, as another storm system approaches from
the southwest. This storm may bring widespread snow to the region
late Wednesday into Thursday, which could be moderate to
heavy for areas mainly south and east of Albany.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Winter Weather Advisory in effect for the mid Hudson Valley
until 7 PM this evening.

Winter Weather Advisory in effect for the Mohawk
Valley...Schoharie Valley...northern
Catskills/Helderbergs...Greater Capital Region...NW CT and the
central/northern Taconics until 10 PM this evening.

Winter Weather Advisory for the southern Adirondacks...southern
VT...Lake George/Saratoga region...and Berkshires until 1 AM
Wed.

As of 430 PM EST, temperatures still below freezing across most
of the region, with dewpoints even a couple of degrees colder.
Low level warming has been slow, at best. Therefore, have
extended freezing rain advisories for central areas and NW CT
until 10 PM. Depending on latest trends, mid Hudson Valley
advisory may also need to be extended. Northern areas may also
need further extension, depending on temperature and dewpoint
trends this evening.

As for precipitation, most persistent isentropic lift will shift
into the western Adirondacks and Mohawk Valley through this
evening, and this is where the steadiest precipitation should be
through midnight. South and east of this area, expect
precipitation to become more intermittent, and may just taper to
drizzle at times.

Some snow/sleet will persist across portions of southern VT and
the eastern Adirondacks through early this evening, where an
additional 1-3 inches of snow/sleet may fall. Elsewhere, only
some spotty sleet at times is expected, with perhaps an
additional coating possible.

As for ice accretion, expect total amounts across portions of
the western Adirondacks and Mohawk Valley to reach between one
third and one half of an inch, with generally one quarter to one
third of an inch across the eastern Adirondacks and the Lake
George/Saratoga regions. These ice amounts will likely lead to
scattered downed tree limbs and powerlines, especially higher
terrain of southern Herkimer CO and perhaps southern Hamilton
CO.

Farther south and east, expect total ice accretion of one tenth
to one quarter of an inch, greatest across higher terrain. Some
locally higher amts of up to one third of an inch will be
possible across higher elevations of eastern Berkshire CO.
Isolated/scattered downed tree limbs and powerlines could occur
in areas with the greatest ice accretion, where gusty winds may
further compound issues.

After midnight, most areas should rise above freezing. Periods
of rain should taper to scattered showers or patchy drizzle.
Temps should rise through the 30s and perhaps into the 40s for
some areas after midnight.

A cold front should cross through the region during the pre-dawn
hours. Isolated to scattered rain showers will likely accompany
the front, and can not completely rule out some form of low
topped lines of convection. If any convection occurs, locally
strong gusty winds could occur.

After the front passes, deep mixing may still allow temps to
surge into the 40s to lower/mid 50s in lower elevations before
falling back into the 30s in the afternoon hours.

Gusty west winds will gradually veer to northwest in the
afternoon, and with deep mixing and a fairly strong wind field
remaining aloft, gusts of 30-40 mph will be possible through
early Wednesday afternoon before diminishing.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
...Winter Storm Watch issued for parts of the eastern
Catskills, mid Hudson Valley, NW CT and the Berkshires from 10
PM Wednesday through 7 PM Thursday...

System currently in the Pacific NW is expected to track quickly
across the northern U.S. and merge with strengthening northern
stream energy diving out of Canada Wednesday night and Thursday. The
phasing of these 2 pieces of upper energy will result in a fairly
dynamic system but the details of timing and track still need to be
fully sorted out.

There is a spread in guidance as to where the axis of the heaviest
potential snow sets up, evident in how each set of guidance resolves
the timing and placement of various types of forcing and moisture
associated with the system.  Some aspects of the storm are a bit
unconventional in terms of how a typical snowstorm develops and
affects our region.  First, though, the cold front that tracks
through late Wednesday afternoon is expected to become stationary
well south of our region and where it sets up will determine where
the best low level forcing sets up when the upper dynamics arrive
Wednesday night and Thursday.

The best low to midlevel moisture, dynamics, forcing and
frontogenesis, basically through about H7, is predicted to be
generally south of the mid Hudson Valley to NW CT and southern
Berkshires. Usually it is the layer between the surface and about H7
that encompasses much of the moisture and best vertical
motion/dynamics in our more typical solid snow events but there is a
decent consensus that the best moisture, vertical motion/dynamics
and frontogenesis is between H7-H5 over our region, especially from
the Schoharie Valley through Capital District and southern VT and
points south. We do not always see a lot of snow when most of the
dynamics are occurring at 600 hPa and higher.

The strongest vertical motion pushes through the dendritic growth
zone, even though it is rather elevated, which could aid in better
liquid to snow ratios.  Will there be a dry layer at low levels that
will evaporate some of the precipitation Wednesday night since again
much of the moisture and dynamics are more aloft?  Maybe, but our
region will be in the left exit region of an upper jet segment
suggesting strong warm advection and isentropic lift as well as
frontogenesis aloft with decent snow ratios due to the dendritic
growth zone should result in accumulating snows developing through
Wednesday evening over the southern half of the forecast area.  Snow
ends through the day Thursday.

So, Winter Storm Watch for parts of the eastern Catskills, mid
Hudson Valley, Berkshires and NW CT. As the storm evolves and we
look at new guidance tonight and tomorrow, we will see where we may
need Advisories and Warnings.  There could be light accumulations
along and south of the Mohawk Valley through the Capital District to
southern VT with maybe an inch or two in the Capital District but
the range of possibilities at this time is a trace on the lower end
to multiple inches on the higher end.  Again, areas with higher
confidence for bigger snow amounts have been placed under a Winter
Storm Watch over southern areas.

Whatever snow falls should end Thursday afternoon and colder
temperatures expected Thursday night as the storm departs.  So, stay
tuned because headlines and snowfall amounts will be adjusted
periodically through tonight and tomorrow since there is a lot of
uncertainty about snow amounts and where the heaviest snow could
fall.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A very active weather pattern is expected to occur across our
forecast area during the long term period with several storm systems
impacting the region.

On Friday...High Pressure will be across the region although there
will be some lingering lake effect snow showers occurring across
portions of the western Adirondacks, Mohawk Valley and Schoharie
Valley. It will be a cold day with highs expected to be in the mid
teens to mid 20s.

Friday night through Saturday night...A warm front will be lifting
northeast from the eastern Great Lakes and Pennsylvania toward our
region on Saturday, while a backdoor cold front drops southward from
Canada. This will bring more unsettled weather to the region with
the precipitation expected to be mainly in the form of snow. Lows
Friday night will be in the middle single digits to upper teens with
highs on Saturday in the upper 20s to upper 30s and lows Saturday
night in the upper teens to upper 20s.

Sunday into Monday...More active weather is expected although it
appears at this time that the precipitation type will become more of
the mixed precipitation variety. The back door cold front appears to
wash out with time as another warm front tries to lift northeast
from the Ohio Valley and middle Atlantic region. The low pressure
system associated with the warm front looks to move off the
northeast coast by Monday morning. Another cold front will be
dropping southeast from the Great Lakes region during the day on
Monday. Highs on Sunday are expected to be in the 30s to around 40
with lows Sunday night in the mid 20s to lower 30s and highs on
Monday in the upper 20s to lower 40s.

.AVIATION /00Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Low level cold air continues to hold on, with temps around or
just below freezing at most TAF sites as of 00Z/Wed. Steadier
precip now to the north, affecting KGFL with persistent freezing
rain and MVFR/occasional IFR conditions. Elsewhere,
precipitation more intermittent. Have indicated freezing rain at
KGFL through at least 03Z/Wed, with intermittent freezing rain
at KALB/KPSF through around 02Z/Wed. Thereafter, temps should
rise above freezing, although KGFL could remain freezing rain
longer.

Occasional rain showers will linger after midnight, then
additional isolated/scattered rain showers may accompany a cold
front between 07Z-11Z/Wed. Once this front moves through,
generally precipitation-free conditions are expected for the
rest of Wednesday.

MVFR/IFR conditions should prevail overnight through around
12Z-14Z/Wed. Thereafter, expect conditions to trend to VFR by
late morning and persist through the remainder of Wed.

Light north to northeast winds will trend into the east to
southeast through midnight at less than 8 KT. Winds should
become mainly southeast to south after midnight at 5-10 KT. As
the cold front moves through, winds will shift into the
southwest to west and may increase to 10-15 KT with gusts over
25 KT. Winds will remain mainly west for the remainder of
Wednesday at 10-15 KT with some gusts of 25 KT or higher
possible.

Low level wind shear will remain likely overnight, as sfc winds
occasionally become variable in direction, and less than 10 KT,
while winds around 2000 FT AGL increase from the southeast to
south at 30-40 KT.

.HYDROLOGY...
Widespread problems on the main stem rivers are not expected
over the next week.

A low pressure system will impact the region tonight into
Wednesday bringing widespread precipitation. A wintry mix of
precipitation is expected with this system as we start out cold
enough for snow and sleet, then warmer air moves in aloft and
then at the surface for freezing rain and plain rain. A
changeover to plain rain is anticipated across the entire
forecast area before ending late tonight. The latest MMEFS does
not indicate any river points having the potential to
reach/exceed flood stage at this time, as the warm up will be
brief, with colder air being ushered back in as the system
departs Wednesday night.

Total QPF from this system will be in the half an inch to an
inch and a third range.

Another low pressure system tracking close to Long Island and
southern New England Coast Wednesday night into Thursday may
