.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will prevail over the Mid Atlantic today. A cold
front will drop through the region tonight with weak low
pressure pushing off the Carolina coast Wednesday. Meanwhile,
arctic high pressure builds across the Eastern Great Lakes and
New England Wednesday and Thursday. Another weak low pressure
system develops off the Southeast coast Thursday night through
early Friday, before arctic high pressure returns for next
weekend into the new year.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Forecast on track late this morning, with only minor changes
needed per latest obs. Increased highs a degree or two for the
afternoon. Highs in the upper 30s/around 40 far N...low to mid
40s S under a partly cloudy sky.

Previous discussion...
Current wv imagery shows a broad longwave trough covering the
central and eastern Conus. Locally, the flow aloft is WSW with
mid and high clouds streaming overhead resulting in a partly to
mostly cloudy sky, which has allowed temperatures to remain
rather steady overnight. Surface high pressure is centered over
the Southeast early this morning and the high center will shift
toward SE VA/NE NC by afternoon. Partly to mostly cloudy N today
and becoming mostly sunny S, with high temperatures ranging
from the upper 30s/around 40F N to the low/mid 40s S.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
A weak cold front will push through the region later tonight as
arctic high pressure builds across the Great Lakes. Partly to
mostly cloudy tonight with low temperatures ranging from the
low/mid 20s N to the mid/upper 20s S. A shortwave trough will
push across the Carolinas Wednesday interacting with the
aforementioned cold front. 26/00z NAM/CMC/ECMWF depict some
moisture and lift pushing into SE VA/NE NC while the GFS is dry.
PoPs of 30- 40% are forecast across NE NC, with ~20% for far SE
VA at this time. Thermal profiles aloft support light snow.
However, surface temperatures will be marginal with high
temperatures in the upper 30s, so any light snow has the
potential to mix with light rain. Farther N, highs should only
rise into the low/mid 30s under a partly to mostly cloudy sky.

Strong (cold) 1040+ mb arctic high pressure will build across
the Ern Great Lakes Wednesday night into Thursday and continue
to nudge into the area. This will bring a cold/dry day with
partial clearing. Highs will only in the upper 20s N to mid 30s
SE, after morning lows in the low/mid teens N to the low 20s SE.
There is the potential for wind chill values of 0-5 above early
Thursday morning over the MD Ern Shore if enough wind persists.

26/00z model guidance continues to trend drier and more
suppressed with the wave that pushes off the Southeast coast
Thursday night into early Friday. The GFS remains the farthest N
with this system, but the 00z run is mainly dry locally, with
the exception of some light QPF over NE NC. 30-40% PoPs for snow
will be maintained for far SE VA/NE NC. QPF will be light and
hence any snow accum will be minimal. Lows Thursday night range
from the upper teens/around 20F N to the upper 20s far SE under
a mostly cloudy sky.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Long term period will be dominated by cold NW flow across the
region. Models still not in synch with regard to the tangible
weather scenario. GFS/ECMWF largely take the first system south
of the area, although GFS tries to bring too much precip too far
north. So have sided with the ECMWF/GEFS in keeping precip with
first system suppressed south of the area. ECMWF tries to take
a strong shortwave across the northern portions of the area on
Saturday, with the potential for snow northern third of the
area. However, GFS does not have this system. Given the impacts
largely being felt in the northern portion of the area, have
gone with blended model solution, with a slight increase in POPs
across the north in deference to the ECMWF. System for Sunday
night/Monday looks to again largely remain south of the area, or
develop well enough offshore to limit any impact to AKQ CWA.
Again, GFS appears to overdo precip moving through the region,
and have sided with ECMWF day 6-7. Bottom line, expect the
extended period to be mainly dry.

Temperature-wise, it will be a cold period, with high temps most
areas not getting out of the 30s from Friday through New Years Day.
Exception will be far SE portions of the area, where temps could get
to or just above 40 degrees Friday/Saturday. Low temps mainly in the
20s Thursday night/Friday night, dropping mostly into the teens
Saturday night through New Years night.

.AVIATION /19Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
High pressure is centered over the Southeast this afternoon
with scattered mid to high clouds overhead in W-SW flow aloft.
VFR conditions will prevail through the 18z TAF period. W-NW
wind aob 10kt this afternoon becomes lgt/variable tonight. A
dry cold front will push through the region late tonight with
the wind increasing and veering around to the N. Weak low
pressure will along coastal front along/just offshore of the
Carolina coast Wednesday bringing a 20-40% chc of light snow or
a light rain/snow mix to far SE VA/NE NC.

Outlook: Strong high pressure builds N of the region Wed/Thu.
Weak low pressure remains offshore Thursday night into early
Friday. Another cold front pushes across the area Friday night
with high pressure returning Saturday.

.MARINE...
No headlines necessary today as sfc high pressure slides into
the Mid Atlantic. Expect westerly winds generally up to 10-15 kt
with 1- 2 ft waves over the Bay and 2-3 ft seas over coastal
wtrs. A cold front dissipates as it drops through the area
tonight, shifting the winds to northerly by Wed morning.
Stronger CAA does not arrive until late Wed aftn/evening when
SCA conditions are likely over the ocean/Bay/Sound, with strong
high pressure building north of the area. Additional periods of
SCA conditions expected beyond then, as series of trofs move
through, reinforcing cold air across the region.
