Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM.../Through Saturday night/A wavy occluded front will
drift E through the eastern gulf today into Sat morning, then move
through SE AK by late Sat night. Used 00z GFS/06z NAM to handle
this frontal system, although other models were generally close on
it.

Main forecast concerns will be precip potential/amounts, winds,
and temps. A band of rain has rapidly developed over the eastern
gulf early this morning and has reached the NW third of the main
panhandle area as of 14z. There have been some spotty sprinkles to
the SE of this band as well. Expect the rain to progress inland
and it should cover all but the far SE corner by 21z. Hyder will
likely get into the rain toward late afternoon. This rain will
continue with varying intensity as weak shortwaves track N along
the front and enhance rainfall as they approach. As front moves
onshore Sat afternoon and night, precip will diminish from the SW
although it will be more persistent over the more N and E areas.
Looking like a general 1-3 inches of rain for much of the area
with highest amounts along southern slopes. Looking like snow
level will remain above White Pass through Sat, although some wet
snow may mix in at times at the border.

Winds are a bit tricky as they vary considerably attm. there is a
fairly strong low level jet in the 925-850 mb layer with 40-55kt
SSE flow there, but the stronger winds are not mixing down well in
some areas due to stable lower levels. As precip develops, lower
layers may see better mixing develop as stable layer aloft weakens
as it moistens up and cools. Generally, expect moderate SE winds
with some SCA to locally gale force winds on the inner channels.
Over the eastern gulf and along the outer coast, winds will be
stronger with gales expected over much of the E gulf ahead of the
front. This band of stronger winds will get squeezed E as front
moves closer to the coast through tonight, then diminish over the
gulf Sat as front moves inland.

Temps were very tricky this morning as they were dependent on the
wind. Some spots were below freezing where winds became light,
while windier spots were still in the lower to mid 50s! Some areas
even saw temps rise 20+ degrees in an hour as light wind picked
up to 10-15 kt or so. Clouds moving in will help warm up the
colder locations, while the warmest areas see temps drop due to
evaporational cooling as rain starts up. Thinking much of the area
will be in the 40s once the rain gets going, with slightly milder
temps along the outer coast (near 50). The colder spots will
likely still be in the mid to upper 30s as rain starts, but they
should warm into at least the lower 40s in most of those places.
Temps will only cool a few degrees from late afternoon to late
tonight, then they will be fairly steady in most areas on Sat.

.LONG TERM.../Sunday morning through Thursday night/...Extended
range forecast begins with a large upper level ridge situated over
western Canada and solidly in control of the synoptic weather
pattern over Southeast Alaska and the eastern Gulf of Alaska. To
the west, a very deep and energetic upper trough will be climbing
the western edge of the ridge. As the trough pushes over the top
of the ridge, it will send a small cut off upper low through the
ridge near Vancouver Monday night and undercut the ridge. The
ridge will then quickly re-build and remain in place through
Thursday morning. Evidence is mounting that by next weekend, a
pair of strong upper troughs may finally weaken and displace the
ridge off to the east.

At the surface, little in the way of change to the long range
forecast - excessively warm and wet conditions will prevail with
periods of heavy rain for portions of Southeast Alaska through
Tuesday night. Heavy precip will translate to potentially heavy
snow only at higher elevations and along the Haines and Klondike
highways with one or more winter weather advisories possibly necessary
through Tuesday night.

The largest change to the extended range forecast concerns winds
over the eastern gulf Wednesday afternoon and overnight. Multiple
models are depicting storm force winds or higher associated with
the Sunday front. Wind speeds were adjusted up accordingly, but
not the full amount suggested by the GFS, NAM, and Canadian NH.
Assuming these three remain consistent for the next several runs
and other models begin to depict similar wind speeds, storm
warnings will become necessary for most, if not all, the eastern
gulf.

used NAM for updates to pressure Sunday through Sunday night.
Modified NAM wind grids were used as the foundation for the wind
forecast. PoP and QPF primarily from ECMWF with a little help from
both the NAM and SREF early on. Overall forecast confidence is
above average for continued heavy rain, warmer than normal
temperatures, and high end gales over the gulf Sunday through
Sunday night.

Have high confidence that gale force winds will accompany the
first front. Much lower confidence on the strength of the second
front. Used ECMWF for updates to pressure and wind through the
weekend. Used NAM and SREF for updates to PoP and QPF through
Saturday night and then a GFS/ECMWF blend through Sunday night.
Transitioned from ECMWF to WPC beginning Monday. Temperatures
nudged up again early to mid next week.

.HYDROLOGY...Kept the Areal Flood Advisory going for zone 17.
While the Situk River is currently below bankfull, it may rise to
around minor flood levels by late this afternoon or early evening
as more locally heavy rain moves in. Will coordinate with the RFC
about this and see if any changes will be needed.
