.SYNOPSIS...A developing low near 50N/160W with frontal band
arcing to about 150 nm south of Kodiak Island and then south along
150W. A ridge axis extends north over Haida Gwaii and far
Southeast panhandle, expect the axis to be east of the panhandle
by noon. A few lingering showers spreading to the coast of
Panhandle.
&&
.SHORT TERM.../ Sunday to Tuesday / Main surface low should
deepen to lower 960s around 100 nm SE of Cold Bay by mid
afternoon as the front reaches the central gulf. Gale force winds
with the front moving north spreading warmer air to the northern
gulf and gulf coast areas. Best precipitation the front looks to
extend from Prince William Sound east to Yakutat bay through
Sunday evening. The weather front will extend into the panhandle
later Sunday and into British Columbia a little after mid
morning Monday.
Do expect gusty winds Sunday evening to impact the outer coast
with gusts to 40 mph, and the Strong Wind headlines. Gusts of 30
to 35 mph for inner channels areas as the front passes through
are likely.
Temperatures warming so much of the precipitation expected to fall
as rain through Monday. Exceptions to this looks to be near the
border of Haines Highway and Klondike Highway above 1700 feet.
Have issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Klondike for
accumulations of 4 to 6 inches tonight... with best accumulations
near White Pass.
.LONG TERM.../Tuesday through Sunday as of 930 PM Saturday/ The warm
weather trend will continue through the extended forecast.
Tuesday begins with a low pressure system moving north over the
western Gulf of Alaska. Its associated warm front will track
northeast over the gulf and come ashore early Tuesday morning.
Currently gale force winds are expected over the gulf with this
system. The bulk of precipitation is expected to be confined to
northern Panhandle; however, some rain may spread into the
southern Panhandle as well on Tuesday. Also, all low elevation
precipitation will likely fall as rain with this system due to the
seasonably warm temperatures. Behind this system, temperatures
continue to trend upward through the week approaching the 50s over
the far southern Panhandle by the end of the week, with the
northern panhandle breaking 40 degrees.
Most of the changes in the extended forecast regarded the warm
front that pushes north across the gulf and Panhandle on Tuesday.
As a whole, models are in better agreement with this system today
with a westward trend favored. Primary guidance was the 18z NAM
to handle the front on Tuesday, which acted a middle ground
solution to handle precipitation between the GFS and ECMWF. Beyond
that timeframe ensembles were favored via WPC guidance due to
continued model run to run inconsistencies. Confidence remains
below average beyond Tuesday as models continue to struggle with
this pattern; the exception is temperatures.

.AVIATION...Main aviation hazard beyond 1500 - 2500 ft ceilings
and the occasional visibility of 3 to 5 miles will be the wind
shear with approaching frontal band. Low level jet of 50+ kt
offshore lessens some over the panhandle but still looks like a
few hours of Wind shear at TAF sites and Turbulence near the
terrain.

.MARINE...Gale force winds over much of the outer coastal area
Sunday into Sunday evening, and spreading into the Clarence Strait
area Sunday night. Late Sunday afternoon and early Sunday evening,
am expecting the development of the easterly barrier jet of 50 kt
from roughly west of Icy Bay to south of Prince William Sound.
Residual seas behind the front from the following swell will build
the seas to the upper teens off the panhandle and the lower to
mid 20 ft range from Yakutat westward. The elevated sea heights
will slowly lower, however, should persist through the week.
